The Buoyancy of Water

Hey all,
Except SmogCon, I've not played in any tournaments so far. So yesterday I went to an escalation steamroller and managed 2nd place out of 17 :)
Wins at 35pts against eSkarre, Saeryn and Kromac, lost at 50pts against eDenny. Looking back at the eDenny game, I forgot stuff on my feat turn (some satyxis should have died) which might have meant Behemoth would have landed his bombards on Dennys head from what I rolled, but that's what happens with timed turns! Also made a silly mistake with Old Witch, which got her killed...
Just pleased and wanted to share :p
Cheers,
Dave

Okey-dokey!
Game 1:
eVlad vs eSkarre, scenario with two rectangles where you score in each one once and need to get two CPs. My list:
Vladimir Tzepesci, the Dark Champion
-Drago
-War dog
Doom Reavers (Leader and 5 Grunts)
-Greylord Escort - To paint
Greylord Ternion (Leader and 2 Grunts)
Herne & Jonne
-Koldun Kapitan Valachev
Kayazy Assassins (Leader and 9 Grunts)
-Kayazy Assassin Underboss
Koldun Lord
Saxon Orrik
vs. Est
eSkarre
-Malice
-2xBone jacks
-Skarlock
Max blood witches (I think, the ones with combined melee and whips)
Some incorporeal pirates
Pistol Wraith
Probably some other stuff that didn't do much
Basically turned into an infantry mash up on the right objective after feated-on doom reavers cleared out the jacks from the zone on my left, giving me a control point. Infantry died all over the place on both sides trying to take the right zone. I think one or two reavers eventually caught up with Skarre and did a hefty amount of damage to her. In the end there was Skarre on about three boxes and around four witches left. Goes to my turn, I load up Drago and cast Assail on him. All ready to trample over the witches to Skarre and go for a boosted to hit/damage roll to pretty definitely finish her off. Dice down is called :( Win though because I have a control point!
Cheers,
Dave
EDIT: Think the TO was taking pictures, so will hopefully get a link to those soon :)

Game 2:
eVlad vs Saeryn reinforcement scenario where you need to control the circular objective in your opponents half of the board.
My reinforcements were a drakhun and bokur. Opponents (Steve's) list:
Saeryn
-Angelius
-Scythean
-Typhon
Shepard
2xDeathstalker
Spell martyr
The thing that explodes
Reinforcements were the Minion predator and a lady on a horse.
This really swung my way turn 2 when the angelius used overtake to kill three kayazy, but also leave the safety of Saeryn's feat bubble. Four charging feat-on kayazy with Hand of Fate up killed it while the rest of the unit dealt with the predator and lady on a horse. When Saxon shot down the shepard it meant my opponent had no real way of scoring any control points. The other heavies got held up by doom reavers and Herne, Jonne + Valachev. Drago with Hand of Fate and full focus charged in on turn three, killing Typhon and severely hurting the scythean before being killed off. Meanwhile, my flanking force had come on and killed the spell martyr before a death stalker triggered a counter charge. Next turn I took position and cleared the last model or two out of the zone to score a control point. Saeryn has no real option but to head forwards a bit to heal the scythean, but this triggers another counter charge. Next turn, Transference + drakhun attaching from the back arc = dead Saeryn. Also got a second control point, and in the end only one death stalker was left alive :)

Well, no one seems much interested, but I've started so I'll finish...
Game 3:
eIrusk vs Kromac, scenario where one flag disappears after the second players second turn. I took:
The Art of War - Tier 2 (fully painted :p)
Supreme Kommandant Irusk
-Spriggan (Bonded)
Kayazy Assassins (Leader and 5 Grunts)
-Kayazy Assassin Underboss
Winter Guard Field Gun Crew (Leader and 2 Grunts)
Winter Guard Infantry (Leader and 9 Grunts)
-Winter Guard Infantry Officer & Standard
Winter Guard Infantry (Leader and 5 Grunts)
-Winter Guard Infantry Officer & Standard
-2 Winter Guard Infantry Rocketeers
Winter Guard Mortar Crew (Leader and Grunt)
Kovnik Jozef Grigorovich
Widowmaker Marksman
Fought against:
Kromac
-Gorax
-Ghetorix
-Stalker
Shifting Stones + UA
Shifting Stones
Shooting Stones
Must have been some solos running about..?
In this one, my kayazy jammed up the middle of the board to hold the stalker in place while the rest of the army got into position. Became a true grind as my infantry went in in waves to hold the beasts and contest the objectives. Eventually, the stalker moved back from the middle objective to stay safe from the heap of guns I had in a forest, and I noticed he moved a bit too far from the objective. Cue sacrificing the spriggan to score a control point! The stalker promptly took the spriggan out via a teleport, but couldn't clear the objective due to too many tough infantry dodging about. Next turn the stalker died, and dice down was called not long after. Ghetorix had spent the game trying to clear the winter guard from the objective on my left, but simply couldn't get through all the tough warriors. Win through having a control point.
Last game, 50pts!
Cheers,
Dave

I'm reading it. Nice to see your progress so far. Was that a 3-List event, because you mentioned the old witch in the first post?

Might as well post game 4 just for the sake of completeness:
The last battle was a 50pt game, where each player had entered one list beforehand. I think I should have taken something far better, but wanted to try out OW + GC + WGRC for template spamming. Here be my list:
Zevanna Agha, the Old Witch of Khador
-Behemoth
-Sylys Wyshnalyrr, the Seeker
Gun Carriage
Lady Aiyana & Master Holt
Winter Guard Infantry (Leader and 9 Grunts)
-Winter Guard Infantry Officer & Standard
Winter Guard Rifle Corps (Leader and 9 Grunts)
Eiryss, Angel of Retribution
Gorman di Wulfe, Rogue Alchemist
Kovnik Jozef Grigorovich
Saxon Orrik
Played against:
eDenny
-Deathjack
-Malice
-Bone chicken or 2
-Skarlock
Max Satyxis
-A UA I think?
Min bane thralls
Max Nyss
A Machine Wraith
Gorman
Probably some more solos
The scenario was the one with two rectangles and you have to score in the one on the opposite side of the board.
Opponent went first, and everything headed up. I then decided to go aggressive to prevent myself getting stopped dead by eDennys feat and loosing on scenario. I ran Scrapjack up into woods on my right, teleported over to him, and feated turn 1. Also put up Iron Flesh on the WGI. Two problems here: first, I should have put up a Murder of Crows to really block line of sight and two, I now proceeded to forget about my feat for the two most important things... Basically, the machine wraith ran up really close to Old Witch (should have died to the feat, but I forgot) then had Hellmouth cast on it, dragging Old Witch out of the forest. eDenny also feated, just being in range of Behemoth. Luckily, the Nyss fail to shoot down the Old Witch and nothing else could get to her without dying (remember my selective feat memory...). The satyxis all ran/charged, engaging the Behemoth, eEiryss and killing a couple WGI. Only the one engaging eEiryss was outside my control area... Back to me, and I notice a possible assassination. 3 focus on Behemoth's sub-cortex. Aiyana gives him magic attacks, and he stays still to aim at eDenny. Due to being engaged by a satyxis that should be dead, I'm RAT4 vs DEF18, so needing 14's to hit. If the Satyxis wasn't there I'd need 12's. First boosted shot, I roll a 12 and it scatters away. Second boosted shot, another 12... I resolve to teleport Old Witch back into the forest, put up some templates and get some bodies in to defend my zone. Not enough though, as next turn Malice can reach Old Witch due to being close to Scrappy (should have teleported him back too) and the Witch obviously died!
So, lots of silly mistakes on my behalf. Remembering the feat properly would have made a big difference I think, but I don't want to take away from my opponent Alasdair, who played a very solid game :)
Overall, second place! A medal, Alexia and the Risen and a signed art of a berserker makes me very happy :) (And I'll get Alasdair next time...)
Cheers,
Dave

Very snazzy sir. Sounds like some good games, and I find that at the end of the tournament most people are making a lot of mistakes. If you can, bring some healthy snackfood with you, trail mix is good. It keeps you on your toes and playing your best.
