View Full Version : Brand new Cygnar hopeful

Hello all; brand new player here. Actually, even less experienced than that- I have the Prime MkII book, but my local gaming store was out of the Cygnar starter boxes.

I reasoned to myself that Commander Stryker (or pStryker, as he's apparently called?) was not really my playstyle- I was attracted to Cygnar not just by the lightning, but also by the sniping.

So my next thought was "Okay, let's make a 15 point list of my very own".

And that, naturally, is right where I started running into trouble.

I wanted to use Caine, either the version presented in the book or the epic version. Going on what I've read (very little) it seems that the epic version trades Lt. Caine's buffs for more direct offense? This seems promising.

I also know I want to use Eiryss (that Disruption Bolt special looks to me like a sure Warcaster lockdown). That's three points, and trying to minimize 'jack use to avoid Eiryss' troubles with them.

Gun Magi seem to be a natural fit with Caine, (and apparently they have even more synergy with his Epic version?), so that's another six points.

This leaves me six points of 'jacks to pick up from Caine's free points, and six additional points in the force as a whole.

I was thinking either a Cyclone or a Defender along with a Journeyman Warcaster, or an Ironclad, a Reinholdt and a Sentinel- I'm thinking anti-'jack capabilities need bolstering in this list.

Does anyone have any advice for the newbie? (Alternately, suggestions on a 15-point army involving ANY Cygnar Warcaster who's primarily about ranged attacks or magical miscreantism are great, too- I have no problems using Haley or one of the Warcasters in a book I haven't seen, as long as they're not too terribly melee-oriented).

Thanks!

First of all welcome!

If shooting what you want you have choose the right faction.
If you like maximum damage from shooting i would recommend.

Marcus (siege) brisbane
Kara sloan
P-Haley or E-Haley

I myself am a new player and i have opted for Siege.
Reasons being hes very forgiving and his Feat is just shocking.

Kara sloan revolves around jacks as her feat makes them shoot twice
and plus Kara carries the biggest rifle of any caster and is lots of fun.

Haley is a caster who has alot of bags of tricks and good spell list.

My best advice is to get hold of that Cygnar book and have a good look through.
You may see something completely different and go down another path.

I can heartily reccomend either Caine or any of the 'casters that Rahn has mentioned, except epic Haley could be a little complicated if you are new to the game.

Epic Caine is indeed more focused on doing the killing himself, but he often goes in to do the deed himself--do or die. No body kills with guns like him, though. Prime Caine gets to shoot all enemies within 12" as his feat--that's a lot of killing! He lacks the focused power of his epic incarnation, though.

If you like gun mages, don't discount prime Caine just because Epic Caine gives gun mages gunfighter (lets you use your pistols in melee). Prime Caine has the spell Deadeye, which makes your gunmages uncannily accurate, as well as snipe. Snipe is one of theeffects they can use, and it wouldn't stack, but it lets them pretty reliably knock down/push away or explode bullets into enemies from a safe distance.

Kara Sloan, our newest 'caster, is a sniper herself. She is new, so there aren't really experts on her yet, but she seems like she wants to give some accuracy support to her army (through a feat as well as Deadeye), but also to shoot things dead with a very large rifle. Her feat lets her and any of her 'jacks make one extra shot, triggered on a previous hit. She has promise!

Siege is a master of the battlefield. He has a nasty rocket launcher, and a big hammer. He is more survivable and probably more forgiving of mistakes than the other 'casters named. He can give cover to his troops, sink enemies down to shoot past them, and has a feat that causes your damage output to DRASTICALLY spike.

Good luck! Wear the Cygnus proudly!

Thank you, both of you! I did, as advised, pick up FoW: Cygnar and, sure enough, it sparked a new idea. My FLGS had pHaley and Junior in stock tonight, so I picked both up and played them with the three jacks from the starter box (proxied, alas, as my starter is still not in 'til Monday).

I will keep my comments brief: Junior-fed Charger + full-focus Ironclad + Temporal Barrier def penalty + Blitz = Wacky Fun.

Yeah, that's a thing of beauty. What did you fight?

We were doing a 2-on-2, Hordes vs. Warmachine, pairing a veteran of each game with a new player. My veteran partner was Khador. The way it broke down was more or less that he engaged the Legion player while I clashed with the other newbie (playing Trollblood).

That feat turn let me pulp a mauler (and come within an ace of killing his warlock, to boot; he had enough fury to transfer off what would have been fatal damage).
