Reach question.

okay, I played a game with a friend and we had a disagreement over reach. Can a large base model with reach attack another model in it's melee range if there is a smaller based model in the way?

Melee attacks require line of sight as well as being in melee range. For your large based model to make its attack, you need to be able to draw a line between any part of the attacking model's front arc and any part of the target model's base, just like you would for shooting.

In short - No.
but the small based model with reach COULD attack a larger based model if a small based model would be in the way. I suggest reading the LOS rules, and all will be clearer.
