View Full Version : complete noob. advice?
Hey everyone. I don't know much about tactics, fluff or even most of the rules for warmachine, but i really want to get into it. I have recently bought the khador battlebox and played a few games with it at my local game store. Alot of the people here play cryx and told me to watch out for "the scar bomb" (i think it's called that anyways). Could someone help me decide what models to buy and how to use them? Thanks.

Thanks. Are you playing MkI or MkII?
I haven't played against it yet, but as I understand it, the Skarre bomb is a lot weaker in MkII than in MkI.
Firstly, my main advice is to start small. And play MkII (MkI is as good as dead in most places).
I'd focus purely on 15pt (roughly equivalent to MkI 350pts) games until you get the core of the rules down pat. And then sit around the 25pt to 35pt. A lot of people desire to jump straight into big games, but knowing the rules well becomes a huge pay off, and smaller games are quicker and less intense, so you can try more outlandish things for less 'cost'.
Have you downloaded the MkII rules? They're available for free download here (http://privateerpress.com/company/mkii-rules-and-model-info-available-for-pdf-download).
As for what to buy, the final decision should really be quite a personal one. What do you like about khador? What sort of list do you think you'd like to run? What Characters do you like?
I'd focus on these; and play what you like, not what others tell you to like. With all the stat cards available you can proxy and decide before buying anything.
Look at the rules books at your LGS, or Battelcollege (http://battlecollege.wikispaces.com/mkiiKhador), to get a feel for the units (fluff and overviews, etc).
Once you have a list written, bring it here and we can give you advice; or a strong list idea and we can help build a list.
I will however say that I advise using purely the Bbox for your first few games (until you are fine with all the jack and caster rules), then move up to 15pts by adding some solos (Things like a Manhunter, Wardog, or Eiryss) or small unit (Widowmakers or Greylords). Once you've played a bit like that and got a true feel for the game, build the list you want to play and see where it takes you.
Thanks, i've looked on battle collage and widowmakers seem pretty good. i think i'll stick with the battlebox for a while until i know the rules. Is there any point in buying the rulebook now that MkII is out?

That and it's pretty :) But make sure to buy the Khador Forces book when it comes out in March though, it has new stuff that's not included in the freebies.
But onto your plight, yeah, get used to the battlebox and read up on what caster fits your play style the most. Try and get used to the many uses of the Juggernaut's open fist. It is awesome.
You can always try some proxy units with some friends. Try out a few things and see what you like, then buy them.
i'm trying to get my friends into it aswell, but they seem to be more interested in GW's stuff. They play almost all of their games, EVEN mordheim and inquisitor..........

For 3 pts a Merc Bokur granting your caster shield guard can make a big difference for both players that are starting out and have been playing awhile. Its a good way to prevent assassinations which allow a Khador army time to rip your opponents army piecemeal.
The bokur shield guard allows the bokur to take one hit per round for your warcaster which can prevent the loss of focus from Eyriss or a high pow ranged attack.

Deciding what models to play really is up to you. The BB is a nice foundation,
Cost and utility being considered, if I had it to do all over again, I would get Greylords, Widowmakers, Bokur, and a second caster.
Nothing changes the way the game plays more than a different caster.
The other three just seem to see a lot of table time.

would the "beast 09" or man-o-wars be good, because i really like the look of them?

yes.
But I wouldn't go about buying them until you've figured out what you really want.

As someone who was recently going thru the same process you are, sticking with the battle box and adding a caster or two is a good idea. Vlad and Butcher being the usual first choices starting out.
From there deciding on a core infantry unit can be a good idea, choosing a unit that can be used with mulitple casters.
Iron Fang Pikemen or Winterguard seem to be the best starting infantry core choices for a new player. Certainly these are not the only options, but they are very all purpose and inter changeable with just about every caster you could want to play.
Iron Fangs would usually consist of a 10 man unit with the unit attachment and would fill up 10 points.
Winterguard would usually be a 10 man unit with unit attachment, 3 rocketeers and the solo Kovnik Jozef Grigorovich which would add up to 13 points fully decked out.
You may want to play around with one of the army list builders like this one: http://www.engineeringcalculator.net/ArmyBuilder.html
to give yourself an idea of how you might want to make different lists easily.

Being a Khador and LoE player is like being a Yankee and Red Sox fan!!! JK :p

Beast 09 is good with any caster we have! Proxy him for fun and see for yourself

I never bought the battlebox. I dont keep the IFP or the Winterguard around. I was fortunate enough to have an active and diverse group of armies being played at my local store and watched a few different styles of play from each faction. From that I cobbled together my first master plan and bought those specific models.
My bias said, I think you cant go wrong with Greylords, Widowmakers, Vlad, and Butcher as your first few picks. I got a drakhun early because self sufficient models are more forgiving when mistakes are made as I was learning. MoW Shocktroopers are standards for me under more warcasters than any other Khador model I have, for what its worth.

The army progression is usually this.
Battlebox or caster +2 jacks - check
small unit/solo or two - check
Full standard unit. <- you are here
WG, IFP and the Kayazy assassins are all solid. AKs are... debatable. WG are the most all around, with Joe they're very solid with their sprays, CRA and melee if all else fails. IFP are all purpose melee monsters with armor to match and the kazazy are stealthy and accurate, but lack armor.
Proxy them! I like the IFP due to their insane speed (charge/defensive line order), and pow 13 + reach.
