The new forum software came with a pretty handy new feature - the ability for people to create arbitrary little miniforums called Social Groups (http://privateerpressforums.com/group.php), accessible through your control panel, or the community menu in the nav bar at the top of the page.

There are already a big ol' bunch of them, but I don't think they're quite getting the attention they deserve; they seem to me to be a fantastic way to communicate with players in your area/that share a common interest where a general chat thread would just get kind of lost/be off topic in one of the existing forums.

Also, if you live around Seattle, join the Emerald City Metalheads (http://privateerpressforums.com/group.php?groupid=38), because it is absurd that it is so difficult to find WM/Hordes in this town.

Any Kiwis out there in the iron kingdoms should be joining the kiwithralls (http://www.privateerpressforums.com/group.php?groupid=15).

Any groups organized for the Charlotte, NC area?

P.S. I found a group for that qualifies, Carolina Crushers http://privateerpressforums.com/group.php?groupid=49 and it has the Bender stamp of approval so you know they're a bunch of honest guys! ;) (http://privateerpressforums.com/group.php?groupid=49)

There's a group for Bakersfield, Ca., and I also created a group for YouTubers to share their Warmachine and Hordes content.

Can someone explain to me what you're supposed to do with them? I set one up for my store's gaming group, and a bunch of us signed up, but we've already got forums for the store, so I'm not sure what, if anything, we're supposed to do with the social group that we don't already get from our forums.

(Not a knock on the Groups-- just curious if they offer any functionality beyond what we already have)

the purpose is that gamers who don't know about your store will find the play group and then find your store in their town.

also it's a store neutral place to talk about events and gaming for PGers in towns with lots of different stores.

I really like the idea since it means that if I have an event I can find everyone in town who has anything to do with warmachine and let them know about it. if it was another stores forums i couldn't go their and say "come to our event because we run the best warmachine events evar"

seen?

Like Captain Spud said, my little local store already has it's own site & forums, but I thought I'd set one of these up as well to help promote it/get the word out to the broader community :)

Also anyone in the New England area or interested in keeping up on PP gaming in the region should join:

I like the idea that the social groups can be formed around themes other than geographical locales (e.g. Searforge enthusiasts).

We can post pictures or movies for others who dig particular models, themed targeted fan art, discuss themed fan fiction, offer logos and banners for others who might want them, etc.

The social groups were a key selling point on the new software. When I bring "From the Trenches" back after the holidays I intend to use those threads to help spotlight various social groups.
