I was wondering if there were any active Warmachine groups/ retailers in the Baltimore area. It seems that mostly all the gaming is dominated by the Warhammer/40k crowd. So if anyone knows of an active Privateer Press group i would be incredibly interested to learn of them. Along with myself, would probably be about 5-7 other players.

The best bet is to join the Northern MD Warmachine group and talk to Merc Commander1. He's looking for people to game with, and I think he plays at Rennasiance Games and Hobbies. Here's a link to his social group on the forums (http://www.privateerpressforums.com/group.php?groupid=90).

I also think there's some people that play at Games and Stuff in Glen Burnie.

The crowd at Games n stuff is pretty strong. Tuesdays and Sundays, some people on Fridays. In Rockville Dreamwizards has a good crew, too; Steamroller there on 3/20. I used to play at Family Gamestore in Savage Mill, but that has kinda died off; which is too bad its 15 min away vs 30+ min for the other two. Crashtestdummy is Drmwzrds PG and Avatar4841(? On numbers) is PG for Games n Stuff I believe.

I'm the new PG for the area, there's also another CrashTestDummy (Nate) down in Rockville.

I'm usually at Games and Stuff in Glen Burnie on Tuesdays and Sundays, and other area stores less frequently. There's a good and growing group on Tuesdays at GCS and Sunday is the day they'll be having their WM events (next is a 50 point tourney on the 21st of March). I'll be starting up the new league there in April and organizing more regular play as time goes by.

PM if you want to set up a game or schedule a specific time. Otherwise I'll see you there. (I'll be the gu in the Boston hat usually).

There are a few kicking about the Baltimore area as you have seen. Parkville area here typing. But as ya said you have 5 - 7 other guys. That is a good sized group to play with as well.

But past Dream Wizards, Games Comics and Stuff and Renaissance Games i cant think of any other places in MD. :-)

I play at Ren Games every tuesday, and we have a tournament at ren games March 27th. If you ever want to pop in or plan a game there, just shoot me a PM. And nice to see we have a baltimore PG! Glad to finally have one. I'll have to make a trip down to games and stuff soon.

Hey! I'm the Rockville PG. I'm probably too far out of the way for you but I highly recommend Games, Comics, and Stuff. I have yet to make it up to Ren Games but maybe this tournament will get me out there. I'll see if I can't draw out some other Rockville locals as well.

For those up by Delaware, we've managed to get a few people playing again at Days of Knights on Thursdays.

Also there's the Icehouse, (http://www.meetup.com/Icehouse-Warriors/) which has several tables at any given time, and beautiful terrain.

We're pushing for a stronger scene up here so come on out. :D

We have regular tournaments and leagues at Comic Store West in York, PA

It's just about an hour north of B'more and is really accessible from the highway.

Games and Stuff is here: http://maps.google.com/maps?q=games%20and%20stuff&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&hl=en&tab=wl

If you're heading south on 695 from I-70, take the 97 exit (it's a left exit) and then take the first exit onto Baltimore-Annapolis Blvd. Turn left at the light directly off of the highway and stay on that road through a few lights and you'll see Games and Stuff on your right.

There's a free (!) parking garage just past it on the road on your right-- literally on the same block.

Que ya one even better UndeadDan, it is less than an hour. You can hit it in 40. So even more of a reason to make it up that way.

WOW, they all the MD peeps are coming out of the woodwork aren't they? Columbia, Rising Sun. Bel Air, Frederick and even people that admit they go to Scranton ON PURPOSE. LOL Atleast go to Wilkes Barre to hit the Woodlands. LOLOL Hope to meet some if not all of ya in the upcoming months. The light must shine on you all. :-)

I also just applied. Trying to get going with WM/Hordes. I own a lot of certain factions, but need to get them together and start playing.

I went to GCS and saw a demo like game last weekend, got me a bit more psyched to play.

DW in Rockville is not my favorite place, but is the closest. I will more likely make the trek to Savage or Glen Burnie or Frederick for games.

Sorry to hear you don't like DW. If you don't mind me asking, what don't you like about DW? If you ever do feel like stopping by Thursday nights are our usual gaming nights. I am a gamer who plays and desires many available resources to feed my habit. I wish DW offerred what I feel most other FLGSes in the area offer. As it is they have such a limited selection and are not responsive to carrying what I believe an adequate selection entails. I want a location that carries a large range of the latest big releases and small. I have seen that in Game Parlor, Family Games and GCS. Everytime I step into DW I feel and have come to know that they just won't have what I desire.

NOW, I in no way want to criticize the player community there. I know very little about that. I did years ago play MTG there when I lived in VA, and it was quite substantive. I no longer play MTG and I feel like the store seems to cater to mostly if not exclusively that mode of gamer. Being a boardgamer, miniatures gamer, and non-MTG card gamer, they just seem with their complete lack of availability to be distancing themselves from my desired purchases.

That being said, I have not had a bad experience there that stands out or anything. I just don't get the vibe I want a game store to have when I show up to play or browse. If WM is why I am there, that is not to say I won't be looking for the latest small release indie game, or wacky card game or whatever else I think a game dedicated type store should have. I have frankly found more available at the Barnes and Noble or Borders than DW and that is a shame.

Just chiming In! I've got a group (I've talked to Dan before) of ~7 players, spread out over the state, that just dont go to Game stores. Three in Bel Air, Two in cockeysville, One out near I-70, and two in Cecil... Some of Us'll be making it to the Tourney are Ren games... Maybe one day I'll get up to york... Man, alot more gamers here than I'd assumed. but, allas, so very few Game stores.

Tionas, if you don't mind me asking, is there a reason you've not 'adopted' a home store for your group? (location, atmosphere, can't drink :-), etc?)

Hope you can make it out sometime soon though, we're really looking to build a community and hopefully start some large-scale events in the area.

Tionas

Its actually fairly simple: We all have Tables at our house, play later hours, and have lots going on. as well as that, were generally not "competitive" players, very much more "casual." I'd hate that feel to go away, as we generally play what we want, with no real worries about what tourney is coming up next, or how we can hone our tournament army. and last: We tend to play, and enjoy, larger battles (50 point)

In short: We are reclusive gamers, that like the clique we've made. we play how we enjoy playing, and adding people or places could quickly disrupt the balance.

all in all however, Anyone is welcome to PM me for a game. I'm up for them pretty much all the time!

It's great to see Warmachine come back to the MD area in force!

Sirit1337 - I only rolled the boxcars because pCaine had to one up his epic version and prove that he's still got it!

ludyee - Unfortunately those sentiments are shared by more than just you. Though
they have been improving their Warmachine selection with the recent increase in interest. Still hope to see you in there sometime. Our play group usually breaks into board game mode after a few rounds of Warmachine.

PG_UndeadDan - How far north of Baltimore is York in terms of driving?

FeignLife - Where is Days of Knights?

That being said, I have some questions for the more casual gamers out there:

1 - Do you find the new leagues appealing? They look like they will encourage weekly gaming and the whole hobby as well as developing a community over beating others down to be the top player.
2 - What about events besides tournaments? One thing that I do miss from "that other game system" is mega battles and mega events. I've been looking for ways to run such a thing in Warmachine, but don't know if the interest is out there and if it's feasible (in terms of time mainly).

PG_UndeadDan - How far north of Baltimore is York in terms of driving?

Mentioned it before earlier in the thread but York is about 40 to 60 mins drive from Baltimore. But let me elaborate more on the topic. Now, that depends on where in Baltimore your coming from. I for one live right off exit 30 on Rt 695. I can make it to York in 40 mins easy. If you was coming from downtown Inner Harbor then i can see it taking 60 mins. So, it all depends.

FeignLife - Where is Days of Knights?

CTD, i think this is the website for the place you asked about. Up in DE. http://www.daysofknights.com/index2.html

Crashtest: Yeah, as was said DOKs (and the Icehouse) is right across the DE line in Newark (Delaware, not New Jersey,) so it's more accessable from Cecil than other venues. Sadly, our player base is small atm. 2 Cryx, 1 Cygnar, 1 Menoth, and a Merc player who likes to play pSkarre for kicks. We have a Khador player who hasn't shown in recent memory, and several people interested in starting RoS.

Our PressGanger has set up a few demos and we're having a Steamroller on the 28th, so hopefully we'll grow larger in the forseeable future. :)

It definitely seems like this is a good time to get into the game or come back to it. I stopped by the Icehouse in DE this weekend and got to participate in a WM demo. Nice location and good gang over there it seems. Wish I could have hung out longer but I'm knee deep in classwork these days and have to force myself to get busy. Wanted to at least get a demo in so mission accomplished.

It's worth noting that Games and Stuff is only about 30 minutes from the Hunt Valley / Timonium / Cockeysville area. One of the reasons I haven't been back to Ren Games has been that it's not that accessible for me, taking 45min+ to get to.

This isn't to say "oh, GCS is better than Ren" or whatever; that's a decision for people to make on their own. It's mostly just not to dissuade the people along I-83 from giving GCS a shot, since it's really very quick to get to all things considered.

Also, wold, another problem with building the scene in the ren games area, is that I've been working on it for two years now. Cidic, myself, and one or two others comprise the entire group. The majority of harford county is 40k players, and they just don't want to try something new, which is of course their prerogative.

Legends in Towson is... eeehhh.

I went in there once and found the staff pushy and the selection poor (and almost all extremely old; I think I might have seen the original Satyxis Raider sculpts there, and several of the boxes were obviously aged).

It's got a kind of dark hole-in-the-wall feel, and I didn't really find it an inviting place. Trying to get information from the staff about leagues resulted in a pretty aggressive "buy stuff now" sales pitch and no real information.

YMMV, but I'm unlikely to game somewhere I don't feel comfortable at.

Also, wold, another problem with building the scene in the ren games area, is that I've been working on it for two years now. Cidic, myself, and one or two others comprise the entire group. The majority of harford county is 40k players, and they just don't want to try something new, which is of course their prerogative.

Well I hope you and your crew can make it out to Game con to throw down on the 18th. I'm plannig a 35 point stemroller - and I'll have coins for the winners.

Before I get it posted on the website though- I'm going to ask here. Anyone who thinks they can come- would you rather play at 35 or 50 points?

Legends in Towson is... eeehhh.

I went in there once and found the staff pushy and the selection poor (and almost all extremely old; I think I might have seen the original Satyxis Raider sculpts there, and several of the boxes were obviously aged).

It's got a kind of dark hole-in-the-wall feel, and I didn't really find it an inviting place. Trying to get information from the staff about leagues resulted in a pretty aggressive "buy stuff now" sales pitch and no real information.

YMMV, but I'm unlikely to game somewhere I don't feel comfortable at.

That's what I heard from someone else- but I wanted to get more than one oppinion.

The Ren Games tourney is saturday, the 27th. It's right off of route 1, in fallston, Maryland. The shop's a bit of a hole in the wall kind of place, but the people are nice enough, and the guys who are showing up for the tourney are generally alright too. Tionas and company, myself and a friend, cidic, and a few others besides. their website is frack awful, so.... Here.

I'm going with the MEH for legends. its a good... game store, but it does nothing to keep or get WM customers. It probably didnt help that there is no PG to spread the word. they also seem to make pules of money with Magic, and that takes up most of their table space.

Yeah, about sums it up. Now i havent been in the current location for some time but last i was there this is accurate enough. When Legends was across the street int he smaller space it was like that. Then they moved to their current location and it was all bright, shiny and new. Smells alright and was clean. Went in with the GF and said "great looking place, see what it looks like in 6 months." We went back in less than six months later and it was back to the way it was. Smelly gamers took the clean smell away, the store surface was full of boxes and junk all over the place. Garbage littered the gaming area. Selection of WM at that time was dismal. The staff couldn't tell me when anything was coming in or couldn't help to order specific things. In the end, i say let it be and die. Nothing good can come of it in the long run. BUT, maybe i will take a stroll in there some time again soon to see if anything has changed. :-)

Hey guys,

sorry to hijack the current discussion, but I have a question. Occasionally I travel to visit the folks, who live outside of Hagerstown. Is there a Privateer Press Friendly place around those parts?

I'd check out the Hobbytown in Frederick. They sell PP- and I know they have an active game club.

Just wanted to chime in. Our entire gaming group made the plunge to Warmachine with Mark II. We're of the same reclusive, older ilk that were mentioned earlier so we don't hit the stores that often. That being said, if the weather is bad this weekend I'm going to head up to Renn Games and get my tailed handed to me for the tournament. I've done many 40k events there (I was the guy that ran the "War for the Cure" last year) and have to tell you that the staff at Renn is great. I've been going there since they opened and have never had a bad experience. I also applied to the google group, so I hope to stay in the loop a bit.

Hey, I'm the PG for Frederick and that general area. :)

The FAIL Gamers club meets at the Hobbytown USA in Frederick MD rather frequently and we're trying to get the fires re-lit for Mark 2. The club and the store are quite supportive, but there's a certain amount of *other game* inertia to overcome.
I am running Mark 2 Demos at the store this Sunday; you can check either the events board here or at their site: http://www.failgamers.com

Tionas - seriously, buddy. Y'all need to get out more this way and play a few games. We've really only got one hyper-aggressive player and he almost never shows up anymore. Everyone else is really cool. Shoot me a PM or something and we can chat.

I used to go to Legends a long time ago, but honestly I haven't been back for over three years so I can't comment on its status now. I understand there are other stores in the area starting up WM.

Hagerstown has a local game store called The Mystikal Keep (http://www.themystikalkeep.com), but the crowd there was more into Hordes and that was somewhat intermittent. That sort of died out about a year ago, as they were more of a CLIX/cards crowd anyway but I'll get back in touch with the owner and see what's going on out that way (it's a long drive for me).

Woldwarrior: It's actually me that's doing the demo at Canton Games this coming weekend. Come down and hang out if you're interested, this will be my first official demo event so it'll be good to have some back-up.

All: Legends has always struck me as a comic store that also churns Magic players. I've never seen anybody even bring minis into the store, much less play there. Also I'll second the comments about 'atmosphere' and it's lack.

All: All you MD gamers should be sure to check out our "Blood and Steam League" culminating in a MD/Mid-Atlantic invitational championship in October:

Your local Press Gangers/Event Organizers are proud to present:
The 1st Blood & Steam Circuit for Warmachine/Hordes

From PG_CrashTestDummy:

What is it?
The Blood & Steam Circuit begins March 20th and will run until the end of September. During this time, every time you participate in a Blood & Steam Circuit event you will earn points. At the end of the circuit, the top 16 point getters will be invited to participate in a tournament in October to determine the circuit champ! Details about the exact date in October will come later. We are working to get a Warmachine Weekend type event scheduled in October and this will be a part of it.

How do I participate?
Come out and play! Play at your local store or travel out to the other various venues in the area and get some games in and meet new players!

Details:
At any event that is apart of this circuit, a player will earn 4 points for a win and 1 point for a loss. There will be a player roster posted here on these boards as well as on the PP boards to let players know their stats and their standings. You don't have to register for the circuit or anything. Just make sure the event organizer gets your full name and e-mail address and your points will be tracked.

Participating Stores:
Hobbytown - Frederick,MD - PG_Linrandir
DreamWizards - Rockville, MD - PG_CrashTestDummy
Game Parlor Woodbridge - Woodbridge, VA - Kerwin12
Games, Comics, and Stuff - Glen Burnie, MD - PG_Avatar8481
Game Vault - Fredericksburg, VA - PG_Trigger
Aardvarks - Lusby/Leonardtown - PG_Capsfan34
NOTE: Not all events will be a part of the circuit. It will always be up to the event organizers discretion, so ask them if you are unsure.

Kickoff Weekend!!!
March 20th - Dreamwizards - 35 Points Steamroller Event
March 21st - Games, Comics, and Stuff - 50 Point Event

I will post a list on this site as well as on the PP boards about events that are apart of the circuit as well as any upcoming events that are apart of the circuit as soon as I hear about them.
If you have questions, contact me! nate.oesch@gmail.com
Have fun!

I'll try to make it. I would like to play a 50 point tournament, but I'm a little daunted by the time limit. I would prefer to play it with the 80-minute per-game limit that we are supposed to have for 35 point games. At 100+2d6 minutes per game, you're looking at 9.5-10 hours for a four-round tournament. Yikes.

For some reason the time limits in SR2010 are longer than they were in SR4. 500 point games used to be 55 min (or so), now 35 point games are 80 minutes. 750 used to be 80 or 90 minutes, now 50 points is 100 minutes....

MkNalsheen
03-23-2010, 07:51 PM
I think I'd like to try a 50 pointer, but I'd have to work on getting a few more models here and there. It's possible, anyway. Maybe a 35 though, since the maryland scene is still fairly new, we might want to encourage as many relative newcomers as we can. How much space is there at the Gamecon tourney?

Wold
03-24-2010, 03:59 AM
We'll have space at Game Con for plenty of people. On Saturday they are running a 40k tournament- and last year's pictures showed quite a few tables.

I decided to go forward with 35 points for the reasons listed previously- the time for the rounds- as well as making sure we make it possible for as many people as possible to compete.

If it goes well - next year I will run multiple tournaments at different point values.

@MkNalsheen: GCS is having event once a month, the next is on April 11, though we're contemplating not running it as Steamroller but maybe a team or multiplayer event, or just trying some asymmetric linked scenarios.

@Woldwarrior: If you announce it, send people to this thread or the forums, the google group or whatever and if you send the results, players and emails to PG_Crashtestdummy I'm sure we can count it.

@Woldwarrior again: I thnk 35 is the best choice, frankly, even in a mature community I think 35 is a more interesting level, but 50 is fun too, just harder/longer to play. I'll actually try to make it up to that event, but I need to check my schedule.

Wold
03-24-2010, 05:09 AM
I enjoy the challenge of making a good 35 point list- at 50 points I can cover all of my bases- at 35 I agonize over my choices.

Anyone who is going to the Ren Games tourney this Saturday - I would like to try and add them to the Blood & Steam circuit but have yet to get a response from them. If someone who is there could mention the circuit to them and see if they are interested let me know and feel free to give them my e-mail address. All I would need from them in order for them to participate is:
a) Inform me of any events they plan on running
b) Let me know the win/loss record of everyone who participated in the event
MkNalsheen and/or Grimmar - If you could get a copy of all the participants and their W/L record and send it to me after the event we can count it as a Blood and Steam event.
PG_Woldwarrior - Send me a pm with event details and I don't think it will be a problem at all adding it to the circuit. What day is the actual tournament going to be?

Avatar - I'll add your event to the blood and steam post.

To those who don't know what the blood and steam circuit is, voila!

Just wanted to chime in, as I'm part of the same gaming group as Tionas and, of course, an MD gamer. :)

@Linrandir - As Tionas mentioned, most of us live in more central/northern MD, and between being scattered about and having familial obligations, its tricky for us to get together often. Still, I'm not at all against a field trip, and if a particularly interesting event comes up, I think we may be able to wrangle some folks up and head down. I'll keep my eyes on this forum, and feel free to PM me.

@Avatar8481 - I saw mention of the possible different event setups for the GCS event on 4/11. I think running "off beat" events is a great idea, and its something that would definitely draw a bigger crowd than the usual Steamroller events (though there isn't anything wrong with a good 'ol fashioned Steamroller tourney.) My one gaming friend and I have been looking around for a WM/H doubles tournament for years; it would be great to fight alongside him instead of clashing, y'know? If you (or anyone in the area) ends up running something like that, hit me up. Sorry you can't make it to Ren. Games for the tournament this weekend. Have a good time with the family!

And to everyone who has helped organize and plan the Blood and Steam Circuit: my most heartfelt thanks. An idea like that can do a lot to energize the players in an area, and really give everyone a sense of community. Hell, if I could find the time to participate, I'd be hitting tournaments left and right in a heartbeat. As is, I'll just do my part and pass the word along as much as I can, and participate when able.
