So the question came up and I thought I would ask you all what you think. Is there ever a time to take just six winter guard?
Have you ever taken six assassins with out the underboss?
Are six IFP going to hold the line with out a flag?
I am asking mostly because I am interested in running two units rather than one with all the bells and whistles. Has any one done this? Does it Work?
What of our unit attachments/buffing solos do you give a pass when taking the joining unit?
I wish I could take just three or four winter guard to hang back with the mortars and field guns. Oh yeah and Kolduns on Bears, because if we keep asking for bear cav maybe we will get it.

Women say that it....OH.
If I take a small unit, it's because I have some very specific purpose for it. Never because I couldn't fit in a full unit. Like taking 6 Mechanithralls to power Skarre's abilities, for instance.
6 man units are good for bodyguards, for flankers/fodder to back up a similar, larger unit, or a distraction. Some units really need to be full-sized to be any good (Assassins) but others are decent or useful in 6 man units (Winterguard).

Pikemen also work good in small groups, since their key abilities are inherent with the original unit (S.Wall, CMA, P&S 13 Crit KD). Same goes for Assault Kommandos and Kossites (D'oi, they don't even have an attachement...), but with the Kayazy? Uhm... only as distractions, yeah...

MoWs work best maxed out for me.

I like to deploy 6 man IFP on guard duty. They get in a line and shieldwall to block los to important targets, like mortars and casters.

Generally speaking, you want to max out where possible.
1) you get a force multiplier from buff spells/effects (battlelust on 12 guys instead of 6 is a better deal for the 3 focus you're paying)
2) When you attack, there will be less left surviving to hit you back
3)you get a force multiplier from UAs, weapon attachments etc due to minifeats affecting more models, more models to 'take up' dropped weapons etc.
I usually only go min on units I think are overcosted but I need their function, i.e 3 shocktroopers to wall off Irusk, 3 Uhlans for a battle lusted alphastrike etc.

In basically every game I play, I bring a min squad of MoW ST. They're super annoying for the opponent. 1.) they take a lot of concentration if you really want to bring all 3 down. 2.) If they get into your lines, they won't destroy anything outright (maybe small, squishy stuff), but they're reliably going to put damage down on jacks and casters. 3.) They're great for blocking LOS. 6 pts, in my opinion, is great.
