View Full Version : My dipped green Cygnar

Hey everybody!
A loooooong time ago (when there was only Prime in the shelves) I started Warmachine. I started painting a cygnar army with purple colours like this:

However...every model took me a loooooong time, and I lost my motivation to paint everything (since I acquired more models than I could paint).
So I didn't play Warmachine for a long long time, and neither did I paint. I somehow regained my interest because of the many Dipping tutorials on the internet. I decided to try it out, and now I like painting again! I'm finishing my army pretty fast now, and even though I would still like to paint models with blending etc (for showcase), at least I can finish armies very fast.
Here's my results of my first tries:

I'm very happy with how they look. Sure you can get better results, but that also takes way more time.
I undercoat with white, paint the greens with GW scorpion green, the golds with burnished gold and the silvers with boltgun metal. I use thearmypainter "dark shade".
I'll upload some before and after pics soon (of stormblades and stormclad), so you can see the effect it makes.
Comments and critique very welcome :)

I am a fan of dipping when it comes to speed and of course the effect can look good with the right colors (which you have done here)
Nice work - would be good to see them based up, that will make them pop more.

Do you dip inside the small The Army Painter containers, or do you apply it with a brush?

I apply loads and loads with a brush, and then I start wiping off dip with my brush :)
Cheers!

These look great! I'm usually a bit "meh" on dipping because of the muted palette dip jobs sometimes have, but these really pop. The contrast of the bright green, pale color, and bright metals, with the shading of the dip really does these models nicely. Great job!
What kind of dipping material did you use ? And are these matte varnished or not (hard to tell - they don't appear shiny, but you never know)?

Thanks a lot for the comment :)
I used Army Painter Dark Shade.
I did not varnish them with matte varnish afterwards. Everybody always tells me dipped models look to shiny, but after 2 days or so a lot of the shine is gone (at least in my experience)

That lloks as good on the metals as anything I usually manage with paints/ink/washes. I don't really like how the armour plates are a bit splotchey, but I guess if you wanted you could touch them up after, assuming that didn't defeat the point of doing a dip in the first place. Nice work.

Wow, I'm pretty shy at posting, but I had to comment that these are the nicest dipped minis I've seen in a long time. Maybe I'll dip my everblights...

These do look very good, nice work!
I wonder if there's an equivalent strategy for painting Khador red...

I would prime white and paint GW's blood red (or something equivalent) as the base coat.

I'm not sure about Caine's face - he looks a bit freaky and undead-ish.
The 'jacks, however, look very nice. I like the splotchiness on the armour. That colourscheme would look smashing on Cryx...

What's wrong with an undead caine? :D
Just kidding, his face looks a bit strange indeed, in fact, I think his whole models doesn't look too good dipped. I might try some touch-ups on that one.
Thanks!

UPDATE:
Here's the before&after pics I promised. They're not very great or anything, but you can see the effect quite nicely :]

These are dipped five minutes before the pictures. I a couple of days I'll put up some new ones, so you can see they're less glossy.
Cheers!

THANKYOU! PRAISE TORUK AND FAERUN! I have just found my new cryx paint scheme!
Seriously, you just used the one shade of dip? No black ink for the steel parts or anything like that? If so then you just made a very slothful cryx player very happy.
This is pretty sweet; you should leave the faces pale. The color scheme is haunting and interesting. Jacks look sweet, and so do the infantry.

Great work! This dipped figures are really good. With out the dipping the color seems like machines who painted in Chernobyl :)

I have just became a huge fan of dipping, what do you suggest tone I use if my army is mainly Hormagaunt Purple?

Just one shade of dip indeed (dark shade from army painter I have, but I chose that one because it was on sale, probably works with any woodstain too :) )

They look really good :) The dip really brings out the green to be more gritty and rugged. Good job!

Dipping can be very hit and miss- these looks really good.
As said- you kept the pallet bright, and the colors look good together.

these look amazing
iv never heard of dipping before though
could someone post a link to a tutorial if possible please
go to thearmypainter.com and watch their videos. Then get floor stain or whatever it is. I just use army painter because I am a chump for marketing. Hence, why I am here.
They told me to play like I have a pair.

I hear alot of people complain about dipping, I think for people without the time or skill to paint figs at a high level it is a great way to get figs on the board with some color. And a finished army is something to be proud of, no matter what your skill level.

Fast and good looking indeed. Not my way of painting but much more faster than mine :p

Painted minis perform better as everybody knows.

Those pics, and that color scheme for cygnar are the reason I am painting right now.

outstanding results - as good or better than some "normally" painted armies I've seen.
