So what I've read is sticking AS on the Black 13 and letting it upkeep for the game. Is armor 14 that decent when they could be upkeeped with blur instead? Defense 18-20 can be nice. They'd only have to worry about scattering blasts and melee at that point...right? I'm fairly newbish but I like the idea. Oh, and can their snipe be combined with a caster's snipe for 18" range?

What are your thoughts on how best to boost them?

AS on B13? Where did you read that nonsense? ARM14 still dies to blast damage. AS is better used on practically any other target, not the least of which being the caster himself.

Boosting their DEF is a great idea, as it takes it from somewhat hard to hit to very hard to hit.

Effects with the same name do not stack. That said, Snipe is not a bad buff on them by any means, as you then can essentially get the benefit of two of their special rounds.

Only times I ever AS the B13 is when I'm afraid of blasts; it does let them survive it. In general, if I'm ASing a shooty unit, it's my ATGM in combination with Deflection. And their Snipe doesn't stack with the Snipe spell. Same name effects never stack.

Best ways to keep them alive is to stay away from high power or boostable blasts.

arcane shield on the black thirteenth made me LOL so hard i wet myself

true story

my buff for them is Gorman Di Wulfe, state alchemist. smoke templates and his nasty bag o tricks has amazing synergy. I will miss the -4 rust bombs.

you can put snipe on them so they can focus on blaze shots and the like. best thing to do. cause you have smoke templates so you don't have to worry to much about defense.

Gorman is pretty freakin' awesome with B13. Pretty much the only way those three could be more epic would be if they had stealth. Oh wait.

I usually run him as the fourth unofficial member of B-13 so he can allow them to use prowl up a flank. Then Lady A and Master H on other flank. A stealth unit with some shooty hurt moving up each flank is fun...

I'm one of the heretics who does indeed Arc Shield his Black 13th.

That being said it's very rare that I actually Arc shield them. I typically shield them versus Khador who usually rocks out with mortars. Pow 8 versus ARM 14 means only an 11 or 12 one shots a Black 13th member versus an 8 or better to one shot a Black 13th member. Yes, yes Epic Irusk with Fire for Effect, Butcher's Feat, etc... the simple solution is to not Arcane Shield them against those armies.

Simply saying this model/unit get's this buff is dumb and following through on it is dumber. Fluid application of your buffs due to knowledge of your opponent works a hell of a lot better. Some people say they never Snipe the Black 13th, I'd ask why not? Isn't having 4 Pow 10 + 3d6, Lynch's Fire Beacon, Ryan's Mage Storm, etc... reaching out to a base 14" worth occasionally burning a Snipe? Personally I find the ability to toss out a 4" AOE that lingers a possible 20" with deviation to be worth it. And 10" range put's the Black 13th well with in the charge range of most troops, something that 14" range prevents.

I do like snipe on them from time to time, 14" weapon master shots and 14" magestorm are still awesome.

Deadeye is the only buff for them that I enjoy using. With that, it's almost assured they can nail any Caster with fire. Though Snipe does have it's place, especially with the ability to shuffle it around thanks to Mk2's version.

arc shield on them isn't so bad if nothing else needs it more.

arm 12, 5 boxes require an average pow 10 to axe them.

with arc shield, this goes up to pow 13 - average rolls to nix them.

Well it all comes down to who you are running them with.

Lt. Caine is probably one the best for buffing out the Black 13th. Blur snipe and deadeye are a lethal combo.
