seems like a fesible list, but its pretty squishy with melee, any suggestions?

I like to fortify a bit with the Houseguard Halberdiers. So maybe try to find room for a min unit of them + UA. they're cheap and with the UA they're really good. So if you can free up 6 points for some tough LOS blocking, Ranked Attacked, Tar Pit, models...i'd do so.

could houseguard riflemen be viable instead of the Halberdiers for this list? As they have ranked attacks and good ranged for a potential knocked down model, or maybe invictors? They would prolly be replacing the full unit of MHSF + UA if that is a good trade off.

Riflemen are definitely a nice option as they are cheap, though in this list you would lose some of their potency given that you probably won't be CRAing in to melee which the UA grants.

Invictors are a really nice unit given that they can serve as a sort of front line with guns. and if you manage to get them in melee alongside one of your reaching phoenixes they can dish out some nice flank damage. But for 12 points for the full unit and the UA it's hard to justify the expense in a rahn list.

If you're gonna sub out the MHSF for invictors I would drop one of your phoenixes down to a chimaera or a manticore as a source for extra points rather than getting rid of solos. However, I don't usually put eiryss in my rahn lists as most jacks (being relatively easy to hit) fall to push effects and slams from rahn and mages(ters).

All in all, I recommend making rahn lists to be a mage/MHA damage delivery system. Just worry about having ways to TK things and having lots of magical firepower for a feat turn. Also don't count out narn and nayl on this list for the usual reasons you don't count out narn and nayl..they're really cool. Nayl is an especially cool way of shutting down anti magic nonsense that's ruining your feat turn.

my main goal was going to be assassination just pulling the jacks or whatever kind of wall they have out and then TK the caster up to my army to pounce on them with dozens of ranged attacks that hurt really bad, and if I'm lucky my magisters might knock down the opposing warcaster. That is why I wanted the MHSF + UA but I can see how my front line is going to get smashed bad since I have nothing but the 2 Phoenix's to absorb damage.

played this list 2 times today and won both games. I just kept my distance and lined up some good feat turns and such. It was devastating to see how well the Magisters did and how well the battle mages did, the only thing I'm not really impressed with is the Phoenix, but I am using them defensively. My play style isn't all out aggressive, I usually play conservative and take shots at my opponent at range to lure them to me for the counter charge and it seems to be a good strategy. not too sure if this is the right way to play warmachine, but I have had great sucess with this playstyle with my Menoth lists and now my Retribution list here. Also the only other units that weren't great were the mage hunter assassins, but that was more likey due to the fact that the battle mages took all the glory of the kill. Anyway is there any advice on a more defensive style of play with the Phoenix jacks? How exactly does the manticore / hydra work, would they work well with Rahn?

I think it's good that you dropped the snipers, but the assassins should be added back - possibly do a min squad w/ ua on the invictors. Also, you should probably find some way to get Eryiss back into the list. With Rahn opening up LOS to the opponents caster with his spells, Eryiss is a natural include to get rid of focus on the camping caster.
