Every army has to start somewhere, my pointy eared xenophobic finger-pointing terrorist elves are starting with a Scyir as the test model for the scheme. In the end, I quite like it. So there. From here on I'll be working to try to get 50pts fully painted before Templecon in February.

Black underneath, plenty of Cryx Bane Base, and then mix a little of that with some white - just a little - for highlighting

Finished the Phoenix. The highlighting on the shoulders is very subtle, but there's several glazes of Heartfire up there to add a little more vibrancy.

Thanks, lads. They're coming out almost... muted... but I think that fits my understanding of their concept. I don't see a lot of nobility and purity in the faction - just a lot of bitter, seething anger, nightmares lurking in the dark. Less ostentatious, more subtle and pragmatic.
Now let's see how long it takes me to get the rest of the unit done...

how did they achieve that orange i have really wanted to do a simular for my ret
I use a mix of GW and P3 paints.
The oranges:
-> Scorched Brown
-> Vermin Brown
-> Chestnut Ink in the power lines
-> Vermin Brown/Macharius Solar Orange/Heartfire mix
-> Light highlight Fiery Orange
-> Light edge highlight Heartfire
I haven't been as diligent with my heartfire as I could be, but it's there.
I tried the lighter coloured power lines, but couldn't find a way I liked it on the orange. Instead, the Chestnut Ink provides a strongly defined line, while also putting a gloss into the cracks making it stand out from the matte of the vermin/macharius/heartfire mix.

Input requested!
For Rahn, since he doesn't have a handy dandy purse like the Jr Mittens Crew, I decided to add the bone/white on his loincloth thingie and a few armour points to break up the oranges a little.
http://losthemisphere.com/cdm/trib/rahndone1.jpg
Here's my question: Should I continue the bone/white around the collar proper, or just leave it on the front plate as it is right now? If I continue, do I do the full collar, the top row only, or just the front upper corner sections?
Input appreciated.
bluecardinal
12-23-2009, 04:14 AM
Your Rahn paint job is really good. I would leave it like it is because in the current state, your scheme follows your other paint jobs. Just looking at your Sciyr in your sig, I think you would need to go back and add a little bone white to get him to match.
Another thing I noticed, the orange balances nicely with Rahn's skin. If you were to do bone white around the collar, it might drown out the contrast of the orange and elf skin.
Hope this helps.

Leave it as-is. It's gorgeous. In all honesty I'd probably have done it black like you did the battle mages, and I think that would have been a mistake. If you continue the white into the collar it will start attracting attention away from the head.
Love the rest of them too. The Phoenix is particularly nice, one of the best I've seen.

Rahn looks great. I would not do the collar in white though. Based on the white in the tabard (and as others have said) it would be too close to his skin tone, and would destroy the contrast between flesh and armor.

The Road to Templecon continues. Compared the Pheonix, the top of the model was just too orange - the Phoenix has it broken up a little by the bone arc nodes - so I added a little freehand on one shoulder to provide some asymmetry and to individualise. Freehand's not something I generally even contemplate, since I am teh suckage at it, but I'm content with how this came out.

Menoth White Base followed by Menoth White Highlight. Coverage on both is pretty decent, so only a couple of thin layers of each required.

How come you like orange in your armies so much?
You don't see a lot of orange models out there, since it's not the primary colour for any of the factions, so it helps the models stand out as 'mine'. I certainly didn't plan for it with the Menites - they were supposed to be blue and white when I first started - but the oranges crept in.
For these guys, I deliberately wanted something auttumnal from the word go, so an earthier orange was on the books from the beginning.

I would like to add that I think the heavy jacks because they have larger flat surfaces than the infantry need some extreme armour highlights just on the edges to really make them pop like the rest of the army. Heck you might even add extreme highlights to all of them! haha!

See that? Right there? Multiple colours and detail on surfaces make Retribution minis look better. I hope this sort of thing sets a trend and Retribution armies become more interesting to look at than just slabs of colour.
I do think the top/bottom split on the 'jacks makes them look a bit slabby and I'd prefer them like the infantry, with a sort of layered scheme (grey for the undercarriages, orange for the big armour plates).

My first thought on seeing Eiryss was "you painted her to match the other escorts, that's like a pun or something". Then I realized you did the other 'low armor' solos the same way. :p
Incidentally; fantastic work, as usual. The Assassins are beautiful (and well painted too! :D). The only thing I can see on Kaelyssa is that her gun would stand out better in orange. It still looks good and if there's anything else wrong with her I'm sure not seeing it.
(I can understand your comments on the Chimera's freehand work. That's a rough one to not have time to fix. :()
Even being a bit rushed this is still some of the best work on the forums.

Wow, I think this is my favourite look on the retribution. Very "Terracotta Army". I like the Ceramic look.
The only thing I don't like is the base markings seem a little... clumsy is the wrong word. They aren't as defined as the rest of your paint job.

Thanks for the love lads!
@Gamingguy, I originally had the gun in the greys, since there's not a lot of the dark grey on the model, but I just wasn't happy with it. Similarly, I got the impression that doing it in the orange would just... I dunno, be too much. When I get around to the redo, I think I'll break the armour itself up into different colours rather than having it so heavilly orange.
@dicegod - yeah, you got me there... they're more of an afterthought than anything else. I don't want to do the whole "half ring" thing, I like a mostly black base - but Lord help me, I can't freehand even triangles for the life of me, so random shapes with a straight edge to denote the arc it is. Again, if I had more time....
gaminguy
01-31-2010, 03:19 PM
I think the armor on Kaelyssa looks just right, it's the gun that gets me.
I think it looks unbalanced because there is orange on one weapon and not the other. I also look at the rest of the army and most of the weapons have at least some orange (particularly the dawn guard and the snipers, who's weapons are the most similar), so it stands out among the other models too.
Lord knows I make some odd color selections so I have no room to talk, and no matter what you decide to do with it your end product will look fantastic. Still, I'd try painting some of the gun casing orange to see what you think of it before repainting the entire model.

If you were to attempt to have the heads turned so it's the profile side view of them, do think that would help? It would give a better chance of seeing the mouth and teeth and really look like a snake instead of like a Joker from a deck of cards.

I CAN'T STOP MYSELF!!!! Had to rush one more model...
I knew I had to work fast, and the black/grey is much faster to paint than the orange, so I thought to myself "Kaelyssa is known as Night's Whisper... shouldn't her personal Hydra be appropriately darker?"
Duskhammer (name pending change if I can think of something cooler) is perpetually wrapped in shifting shadows. I represented this through heavy-handed washing, and then ruined the whole night concept by adding some nice bright freehand ;)
