View Full Version : WM/H in Montréal?

I had just started gaming down at Gamer's World when they closed, and now I don't have anywhere to play. Are there other venues in Montréal where my wife and I could find a game every now and then? Other stores where we can sate our appetites for pewter and WM/H books?

It is a little bit of a drive, but you are always welcome to join us south of the border. Quarterstaff Games in Burlington, Vermont has a vibrant community. We have open play Thursday evenings, we run the leagues, and typically have a tournament each month on a Saturday or Sunday.
We're always happy to welcome out of towners. Feel free to contact myself or PG_Zaxon.

Oh...Gamers World closed, that's too bad. i've been there once or twice. Seemed like a nice place.
Well Silopolis, the Ottawa community does run regular events and tournaments, you're more than welcome to join us. We usually announce events on our fourms at:

Gamer's World closed? I was there a few weeks ago, have been considering getting into WM/H (been lurking the website for a while). Damn, that sucks!

I saw that there was a sign for a new game store coming just about right next where GW was. I imagine something will show up to fill the void.

The new store will be in the same space where GW was, and should open at the beginning of June. A big accent on gaming and in store event will be made. That's what I got from the guy helping with the scenery and scenery planning.

Does Valet d'Coeur have a decent WM/H selection? I need to pick up my Bomber and my Cryx book!

I grew up in Montreal (well Laval) and lived in the West Island for a long time. I went a few times to Gamer's World, and to be honest, I am not suprised that place closed. The staff couldnt tell their elbows from, well, another orifice. Rude, slow -both mentally and literally with respect to the speed of their service, and incompetent. Most of them didnt know how to use their point of sale system.
I still think the best gaming store in Montreal is Librarie Donjon. There used to be one in the Village by Metro Beaudry, but that one closed a few years ago. They still have a store on la Jeunesse street, just north of boulevard Henri-Bourassa. Its accessible by Metro Henri-Bourassa.
Store is clean, bright, knowledgable staff. Most of the staff are bilingual. And they have good buying power, having 2 other stores in Quebec City, so their prices are good. (Last time I checked they were on par with Valet de Couer which was less the Gamerworld.)
Although like Fearless said, come to Ottawa for Warmachine. I cant understand it. Organized gaming sucks in Montreal, but Ottawa, that 1/5 the size of Montreal, has 10 times more gaming going on... its weird.

A friend of mine just opened a store in Joliette (about 30-40 min. north of Montréal). There are a lot of GW gamers, but we are a few proud Warmachine players eager to have new opponents. There's not a lot of PP products on the shelves yet, but it's only a matter of time.
Here's the facebook link to the store's group:

Even though I am from a competing store I would still like to wish the owners of Donjon well. Montreal does not need less game stores. Montreal is far too light on game stores for our population already. The biggest problem here is that people seem slightly ashamed for their hobby. I have people who are friends randomly appear in the store at the same time and be surprised to see each other.
Some people have asked me if the stores could get together and set up an intro store competition. I would have no problem about that but I know for a fact that game store owners, managers, and employees, have a zillion plates to juggle already. Like herding cats is the phrase that would come to mind. There are groups in the city who do organize events like Club Chaos who are organizing Chasoludik in the new year, and the 40K meetups that are getting themselves going.
We will support any group that supports gaming in Montreal, providing we are notified of it early enough. Personally I think Monteal is a big pond with a couple of little fish in it. We have 320,000 people in my borough and exactly 3 game stores, with two of those being more card shops or toy store. In my experience it takes a population of 50,000 people to support a small game store and 100,000 for a large one.Montreal should have dozens of stores, not less than ten on island.
Cheers!

Hello, I live in Montreal, I have an army and no one to play. I'm looking for people to play against, organized or not. I live in near Marche Jean-Talon. I haven't played my Cryx in a while, would be nice.
I've heard there was a fairly large community in Montreal. Any ideas as to how to become involved, aside from the obvious drive to a nerd station. :P

If you want to search for opponents without searching a game store out try here: http://www.wargamingmontreal.com/. It's a local non-affiliated forum.

Current stores in the Montreal Area I can think of... for War Gaming that is.
BD Cosmos (Laval, near Montmorency station)
L'Abyss (Saint-Michel station)
Gamer's Vault (Snowdown station)
Game Keeper (Henri-Bourassa Station and another at Verdun station I think?)
Le Portail (Deslon south of Montreal)
Grimoire (inbetween Langelier and Radisson stations)
And a few more places though I haven't visisted in a while - there's Chimera Games I think, a bit outside the subway system.
As for registering on the montreal forum, what are you having a hard time with? o:

Register there, choose Language before clicking Accept, top right area of the page has the language select.
And they do manual acceptance after the validation email, due to a spambot issue before.
Store map of the area, not all are gaming places but they are hobby store, in the sense of the whole hobby - car/plane/train models and all the testors and woodland scenics range of products, other mini games - lots of GW and PP but some have only one or the other.

As of 8 months ago, the Game Keeper at Verdun was selling WM/H but was doing nothing to support it. All they do support is MTG, even though there's a huge card store right across the street that's already filling that niche. I bought some models from them right when they opened to encourage them to support WM/H, and I used to live around the corner, so I'd go every month or so and see if they had anything set up for us (play times scheduled, tables set up, etc). They never did, so I kept buying stuff at Gamer's Vault, cause I try to buy where I play.
Anyways, I'm not bitter...
...much.

You could also add Le Beginner to this list located in Longueuil also on the south shore: http://lebeginner.com/ The difference between Le Portail du jeu and Le Beginner is that Le portail has a more experienced meta while le beginner still has a faiylr new player base. Both stores though are very nice and I recommend either one of them if you are on the south shore, or both if you have enough free time.

Le Beginner has more beginner players ;)
Sorry, I had to do it. That is what happens when you have nothing to do at work and an internet access. ;)
