So, I'm going to order the following things....

1. Rayvn
2. Chimera
3. Gorgon
4. Myrmidon box set
5. Arcanist

And of course the book, because I have not the rules. (Stupid Privateer Press and your unwillingness to give us a few cards.... CURSE YOU!!!.... Just kidding. I want my fluff. :D)

Any thoughts? Comments? Needs to slap me over the head for not getting the book first?

Let's put it like this: on what have you based your choice for the models you list? If it's just the look of them, then by all means go for it.

If your looking for synergy, I do recommend getting the book first. It has all our models in it, which means you can pick those models/units that work best with each other.
Example: I bought the book first, then purchased Vyros, a Manticore, a Hydra and a Griffon based on what I read.

The Retribution is a very balanced army, with a lot of (sometimes hidden) synergy. Eveything can work together (yes, also the models you listed), but some things work better in combination than others. Have fun figuring everything out! And of course, our community board is here for you. :)

Cheers,
LX

So......... What if I can always get more later after reading the book and I just want to get some stuff to put together?

Woooo. Lol. I'm getting about 300 smackeroos for Christmas from my madre, so I can afford to buy more. Hehehe. But from what I've seen, I love all those models. Think it's a decent place to start? And how's Rayvn? I chose her because of the buzz on the forums. What does she do?

She is an infantry shredder. She likes to mix it up in melee herself and she can and will butcher squads of guys at a time, even shieldwalled troops are likely to die since she is p+s 13 with boosted damage rolls. She also favours a ranged type army as she has access to snipe so I would find the Houseguard riflemen (who can CRA into melee) invaluable to her. I have not played her so I'll leave it to other to fill in the gaping holes I've left.

Ah. How's her magic? Is it comparable to other combat Warcasters such as the Butcher?

Her spell list is

Snipe
Vortex of Destruction (her boosted damage in melee spell)
Locomotion (Nemo1)
Eliminator (if you don't have the book yet, check http://privateerpress.com/no-quarter/web-extras/mk-i-retribution-of-scyrah-stat-card-pdfs and look at the Vyros card)
Veil of Mists (she places a cloud and it does not block LOS for friendly faction models and friendly faction models gain pathfinder moving through the cloud.

Any thoughts on a solid beginner caster?

Probably Kaelyssa would be among the most forgiving caster. She has a great defensive feat and 7 focus as well as 7 warjack points.

Going to echo Kaelyssa as our best starter caster. Also Vyros is fairly friendly, although I haven't had much experiance with him as I run more garryth and rahn. However, Vyros seems like a pretty straight forward fighter. Some of the others might be able to qualify that statement.

With the extra money you might consider another heavy as it is always handy to have.

Heh. But which heavy? Oh wait, they come in a boxed set, silly me. Buahahahahaha.

True on the infantry shredding thing, but she also puts large dents into normal targets, hard and soft alike. She is essentially a potential PS 13 weaponmaster model with 6 total attacks due to vortex, and then a POW 12 final attack if you go whole hog on one target. Casters sorta need to worry about that, particularly if you can hit them on average with MAT 7. :)
