View Full Version : I've been wondering about colours...

The Kodiak, Beast 09.

Why are they beige, and... well, a different beige, as well as red?

Is there some special fluffy reason, or is it just how they happened to be painted?

They were painted that way to show different color schemes.

My Khador color scheme is based on that Beast 09 scheme for instance.

I did beast 09's basecoat based on its photo. I figure since he's unique, he should stay fairly strict to his scheme.

I wasnt keen on the kodiaks scheme, so I was curious as to if it had purpose. I'm not one for strictly following schemes, but if there's a decent reason to use them, I often do.

The way I see it, Beast's color scheme is based of the 501st division schemes, which, last we saw, Sorscha was a part of, and therefore it would make sense that her 'jack would look the same.

As far as the Kodiak goes, the Kodiak is a refit for Juggernauts which have been in the field for an extended period of time- hence the all terrain and heavy boiler- they were custom made for a particular wooded border force which would make sense to use those colors.

Obviously, it wouldn't be too far-fetched to see either of these 'jacks in alternate color schemes. As long as Beast isn't pink with lollipops and flowers, I can sleep easy.

My Khador are Reaper's 'violet-red' and when I mottle it it comes out dark pinkish. I could prolly candy stripe Beast's axe while I'm working on him tomorrow...

The Kodiak is our "Scout" Jack. It has Pathfinder, a Heavy Boiler that lets it maneuver a lot easier, and the colour scheme is camo.

Beast-09 is just 'cause, I guess.

Kodiak uses color scheme for V Border Legion as that's what it was originally designed for. Which is to say that the studio-painted Kodiak does, not every Kodiak in the field (I'm not a fan of it myself, all red looks better).

One of Mk1 books, I think Escalation, had a picture of an entire army in that scheme, with MoW and all.

Presumably there are other different color schemes for other famous units.

I've tended towards pink, white and natural metals. But lately I've been going for black, dark gray with dark red for the lines of a jack and gold for the metals.

I wonder do you guys actually paint your forces in different schemes?
I mean thats gonna be visually messy on the table top, doesnt it?

That is true - but it depends on what models you have. I field to Jugs and like to be able to tell them apart from where I'm standing, so varying your painting scheme while keeping your colours is a valid option.

The rainbow army is not. ;)

Some of my models almost never see play unless under a specific caster and/or with specific support. So sometimes I'll add a little somat to those groups so they have more flavor. When in a two caster game I think its cool for each half of the army to be visually distinct.
And ditto with varying schemes to tell apart twin jacks. I try to change up spikes or other decoration with that too.

Most of my infantry is leather colored w/ a few reds here and there. Then the armor colors are that beige bone color to match the armor of the rest of the jacks. Casters I think can be whatever color one wants, they are the most unique model on the table. But that of course doesn't mean sorcha can be yellow and the butcher lime green.... unless thats already your paint scheme. >.<

An army does not have to be the exact same color to look consistent, thought it is good to have each unit internally consistent in color. That does not mean each model has to be identical application of the colors. The pirates which are different combinations of colors are still consistent with each other since they share the same basic color scheme though in different ways.

My Beast-09 however is Khador red with black trim. My Kodiak is greatcoat gray with red and black trim. I neither liked the white or green color for my warjacks nor did I like the greatcoat gray when I tested it on Beast-09.

For the most part my Khador models are some combination of gray (Greatcoat or Iron Hull), Khador red, Silver, Gold, Black (including Coal Black) and various browns, usually with a reddish hue. Khador red is the most prominent.

I did do eSorcha in a greenish gray for her armor with red and black trim, minimal gold and silver for the metals, blue for the glowing hammer but because the roots were still there, red, iron hill grey, black and silver she looks right at home with Joe and the Winter Guard.

Well I am using Velagio black-red as my base colour on all my army working up to red on the edges but on the Jacks I have painted the backs of their hands in yellow and black hazard stripes "warning this will hurt!!"

If and when I get the character jacks I will keep the colours the same as the rest of my army to match.
