View Full Version : What Encounter Level do you play?
12-12-2009, 06:34 AM
I've asked this before (a while back on the old forum) and got good feedback, but now after some more time, I have two questions for you;
1) What encounter level do you play most? (optional: any specific reason?)
My buddies and I are playing 50 pnts over Vassal when we get a chance to, we like that it feels like you can throw whatever you want into the list and just hit the table. 35 is fun and faster, but we just feel we don't have to leave anything at home.
2) Is there an official tournament size that I'm just missing out there?
I'm thinking 35pnts or 50 pnts is going to be the tourny level, and in mk1 I preferred to play at 500 points because it was most often used for tournaments (unless I'm mistaken).
So, there is that, what about you?

I usually play 15pts, because thats what me and my friend enjoy th most, its small but we still get alot of play time out of it. Other than that we usually go for 25 pts, this alows us to feild our battle group along with a couple solos and a couple units. Usually at 25pts we like to make up scenarios and just have fun wit it. We want to go to 35pts, but we decided to mix it up and start Hordes :)

I like the speed of the game at this level and you have to make hard choices about what you want rather then having room to spam the obvious power choices...

50 points, simply because it's what everyone else in my area plays at.

I play 35 most often now due to time constraints, but I prefer 50.
50 is 750, so that is most likely to be the SR5 standard.

35 is just about all I have time for these days.
I used to run 750 as my standard for a long time, though. Specifically because I like my 'jacks. :)

I like 35 and 50, haven't tried any other size yet. 25 seems interesting then you have to make some hard choices.

I have only played 35.
But I tend to run expensive infantry, so 50 would probably be better.

25pts for me, but that isn't a real choice as my whole collection is 28pts right now.

As has been posted above, I prefer 50 because you can take a couple "just because" models if you want, but you can't take just "whatever at all."
35 is also good, but your list has to be a bit tighter wound.

I usually play 35pts or 50pts.
All the things I want in my 35pt lists adds up to about 50pts.

So far, I have not played more than 35 points, for obvious reasons. In fact, my army is about 35 points. Well actually that isn't quite true, I've played a team game which was about 60 points between myself and my partner.

15 - 25 at the moment 'cause my regular opponent doesn't have a massive collection and I'm still sounding out other local players I'd actually want to invite into my house.
I kind of miss living in a city where Warmachine actually had a player base. Still, necessity is the mother of invention...

50pts is without a doubt my favourite.
Lets me take three or four heavies and a couple of units. Whereas at 35, my infantry are just gathering dust, and trying to fit the stuff I want into 25 is nigh-on impossible due to my obsession with enormous smashy things.

50 pts. or bust. 35 is too darn short.
12-12-2009, 04:48 PM
Most games around here are 35pts, with 50pts as the 2nd preference.
12-12-2009, 05:24 PM
35 and 50 are both good with me.
12-12-2009, 05:33 PM
35 points. Most local players around me are playing at that level and is the one that I find comfortable time wise.

Yeah a lot of you are saying what I thought you would. Still kinda a split between 35 and 50, almost right in half. Thanks for the feedback!
So is the rumblings that 50 pnts will be for Steam Roller?
12-12-2009, 08:54 PM
50 points mostly, because I have 2.5 to 3 hours to play, and with a 50 point game you can typically get one very good game in there, counting setup and teardown time. At 35 you can end up finishing half an hour early and not have time to run anything else.
Most tournaments around here were at the 750 level and were Steamroller tournaments. I'm betting the standard for Mk II will be 50 points.

35 points for me, mostly because I like quick games.
Though lately i have been wondering if MK2 was calibrated more around 50, I keep running into big time Rock Paper Scissors problems.
Edit: And running very Ridged army builds that are flexible enough to handle everything because I don't have enough points to buy multiple groups of specialists.

We have been playing 35 for the Hordes field test and I think that's the level I'd prefer to play Hordes at currently. However I prefer Warmachine to be 50 points, and I expect it will drift there after a bit of time for events as well.

Around here 35-50 is standard. I've only played a handful of 75's - fun, but can take a bit to get through. It feels like an old 1K game, but with just one caster, which is a unique experience.

In MkI, the most common game size in our group was 750. In MkII, while we have played a couple 50pt. games, we have been diogn a lot of 15pt. and 35pt. tests.
Pretty much anything above that was in a blue moon in MkI and will likely stay that way in MkII.
12-13-2009, 10:55 AM
We have all been playing for years here so 50 is our standard, we used to play 750 games Mk1.
12-14-2009, 09:54 AM
25 is the most common I see, but we have a lot of new players with smaller collections.
12-14-2009, 09:59 AM
35 so we can fit more than 1 game in a night.
12-14-2009, 11:27 AM
35 - 50 around here. I do rather enjoy 50 games though. Although I was just looking at the Encounter Level list and find this kind of strange.
Duel - 1 Warcaster PTs: 15
Skirmish - 1 Warcaser PTs: 25, 35, 50
Grand Melee - 1 Warcaster PTs: 75, 100
Battle Royale - 2 Warcasters PTs: 100, 125, 150
War - 3 Warcasters PTs: 150, 175, 200
Apocalypse - 4+ Warcasters PTs: 200+
The strange part is between Skirmish and Grand Melee is only the maxium pt its still 1 caster. So I wonder why have the difference?

Around here we usally play 50 point games so we can get used to all the changes. We plan on scaling down to 35 in a few months so the games go faster.
12-14-2009, 12:20 PM
I have a 50 point list but I only have time for 25-35 point games.
12-14-2009, 12:23 PM
The standard around here is 35pts usually, though I think most of the other guys like 50pts about the same.
12-14-2009, 12:32 PM
I prefer to play at 35 but everyone around here plays at 50, tournys so far have been at 35 points around here
12-14-2009, 12:39 PM
35 and 50 with our local group.
35 pt. games are a lot of fun but force some hard choices in model selection.
50 pt. always seems similar to a kid in a candy store, so many choices.
50 & 75 for us. Usually 50 though.
12-14-2009, 06:39 PM
35 pt and will try 50 soon.
