*sigh* So I took one look at these guys with their hilarious S shaped spears and realised that I was going to have to replace the shafts.
Three hours work and... Tadaa:

I have 4 more to do tomorrow, but I figured I'd do 6 now (so I have a usable unit at least) and then quit before my sanity snaps.
Before anyone asks. I clipped the spear away, and then used a small drill bit in a pinvice, to make "seeker" holes through the hands, before using a much larger bit to make a hole for the rod, so that I could use a solid piece.
I chose hollow brass rod so that I could put a small length of paperclip at each end (look carefully at the photo if you missed that) and then dilled holes in the head and... erm? Foot? of each pike to reattatch them to the rod.
It took so long because my drillbit is blunt (more arriving via post for tomorrow I hope). Tomorrows should be quicker.

good stuff man, good stuff.
"It's burrowing into my brain!"
Its sad to think I'm going to have to do this one day to my IFP.

Having done the same for my Bane Knights you have my sympathy. I never spammed Bane Ks in MKI because I couldn't face doing more than ten :(

Wish I knew where to buy that rod you used to do your shafts. What size is it? 0.8?

If its hollow then it's referred to as tubing and you can find it at places like Metalliferous (http://metalliferous.com/) and Rio Grande (http://www.riogrande.com:80/Default.aspx). Also, some hardware stores carry that small gauge of tubing (Both thin-walled and thick-walled).

I buy mine from the railway shop across the road from my store. (Handy eh?)
I assume google will as allways come through for people and be able to provide some online solutions for where to buy the stuff.

I'm about to do the same with my MoW ST. I'm holding off getting IFP until I feel I have the sanity to do this...

The IFP are nice models but it took lots of motivation to get my ten man squad put together. I used solid steel wire from the railroad shop to replace the shaft. It was total drudgery.
At the time I was also putting together a squad +UA of stormblades. These don't exactly go together quickly either so it made for some long nights.
After painting and in gaming with the IFP I'm sure glad I took the time to fix these guys. They look great.

I'm waiting for my IFP spears to break before I replace the shafts with brass rods. They are fully painted, so I guess I will have to be extremely careful while drilling :)

My new drillbits arrived this morning. Nice and sharp, meaning they actually drill, rather than needing brute force or something.
Got the other 4 assembled and basecoated the lot. (No photos, because a load of black models is boring) - No shields glued on yet, I'll get the men painted a little before I cover them with shields.

What size have you found to be ideal for this project?

I did the same to 10 bane knights. I used steel music wire, but paper clips have a good amount of strength too (although I would not recommend using brass wire...too bendy).
It was a pain when I did the work, but I know that the old halberds would have driven me nuts...I think that you will find that it was worth it too.

I hated trying to get their hands drilled out right. I have 10 done with 10 sitting to the side waiting for their surgery...

I've done this to 16 IFP. It's a little mind/finger numbing. I'm also in the process of replacing the back spikes on my Skorne Cataphract. Not that's a PITA!

I don't think it's been answered yet: What size tube / rod works best for this?
Also, does anyone know if the pikes on the Uhlans are the same size as the IFP?

Ulhans Lances are alot thicker than the IFP's and do not need to be Pinned.

I had the hardest time not chewing off their fingers with my drill.

I used 1/16" brass rod on mine.

Use a small drill to make a "seeker" indent in the hand first. Then use a bigger drill to go through, then the correct size to widen the hole to place the rod through.

How did you do the models in the third picture? Just glue the rod under their arm? Thats what it looks like but i just want to make sure before I clip mine all up.
