View Full Version : Countering Legion of Everblight Striders?

Had a game last night vs. Legion (won through pure luck) and the biggest worry for me were his Striders + UA, who could have murdered my Black 13th (the only anti-stealth I had in the list). They have a ridiculous threat range (move 7, Pathfinder, 12" weapon range) hit hard (CRA) and are hard to get at (Stealth against range, Reform to keep them away from melee). So, two questions:

Does Cygnar have any hard counters to them - units, models, or effects that just shut them down? (I figure not, but it doesn't hurt to ask.)

Failing that, what are some soft counters? I ran a Lancer and Charger up to engage a couple of them, but that left most of the unit free to move away. A few things I thought of but did not have the ability to implement in the game:

Run a fast or Reach unit (or preferably a fast Reach unit) into them to engage - you probably won't be able to get a charge off, but tying them up in melee is probably good enough. Options for Cygnar: Storm Lances, Stormguard, Steelhead Halberdiers, Lancer, Firefly, Stormclad.

Throw AOEs at them and hope for a good scatter. Cygnaran options: Black 13th Mage Storm, Explosivo, Triumph, etc.

Counter the stealth, as detailed here (http://privateerpressforums.com/showthread.php?20715-Stealth-Mitigation-for-Cygnar-A-Quick-Rundown). The tricky bit is getting to them in order to do it - they can stay at least a solid 15" away from units and still be hitting, with careful use of their range and the Reform ability. The best counter here seems to be Gun Mages + UA using Snipe shot - 20" threat range.

The Black 13th's Fire Beacon + some Long Gunner or Trencher CRAs would work well; the trick is to get Lynch close enough to toss out the Fire Beacon. With a 16" threat range it is doable but tricky. Snipe on the B13 would help.

Brisbane, Ground Pounder.

eCaine. But you knew that :D

I use eCaine with ATGM and B13. My regular Legion opponent no longer brings his Striders to the field.

ATGM+UA are our hard counter to anything stealth.

If you're running a caster with Chain Lightning, a Lancer should be able to run close enough to arc death through most of them.

I prefer shooting it on a storm unit and letting it bounce onto the Striders. At DEF 15, they're tough to hit (still need an 8 with pHaley or pNemo).

Eight to hit with the Squire reroll is solid odds (at least 80%), but if you can get a model within 4" of one of them that is an excellent plan.

Yeah, I usually can get something up there. I'm just too scared that my dice will do what they usually like to do (roll about 6 consistently).

If you take the ATGM+UA and you play a caster with Blur, put it on them. Legion hasn't got that many options to hit Def 18 troopers.

Gorman + B13th eats pretty much any AD light arm skirmishers. You got 2 auto damage POW 12 AOES, anti stealth with Lynch, and watts for the hell of it.

Gun Mages + UA will mow them down.

Seems like just the type of unit that Triumph was made to kill.

Yes, I am kidding.

I warn you, there is a new trick I have seen and indeed used myself coming through - Striders whoppinh in melee too!

Absylonia casts Carnivore on Striders (+2 Mat, if they box something, Aby heals) and Sorceress on Helion placing Blight Storm on an enemy unit.

Striders can charge 10" with Pathfinder, ignoring forests with Hunter, hit at Mat 7/8, and even if dmg roll fails to beat arm, Blight Storm means the target can still take 1 dmg.

So as long as they hit, 1 wound infantry, no matter how high their armour, goes down.

Multiwound models on their own are also at risk - watch a supposedly safe ADed solo get torn asunder....

Oh, and still get their end of activation move so they can step up and engage something else preventing charge back at them, holding your line back at def 15.

Simple, but effective. Watch for it.

How does Ryan get 2 POW 12 AoEs? I thought her Mage Storm AoE was a * Attack, as it can only be used once?

How does Ryan get 2 POW 12 AoEs?

She doesn't; the second one is from Gorman. Note that his range is way lower, though.
