View Full Version : Changing My Retribution Scheme

Larkin Vain

I'm repainting my Retribution again. This is the 3rd scheme I've done and I think that I will stick with this especially since I'm tired of painting these guys so many times. It's the scheme that I originally thought the faction to be when we first saw the colored art work.

I think the colour scheme works nicely. The hardest thing with retribution jacks is the shading needed on the smooth armour. There are lots of tutorials on the Web. Take a look at cars and notice how the light and shadows form on the metallic paint.

They are table top quality.

The flat silver, well it just looks flat. There needs to be some kind of highlight on the metal and some shadowing to get an appearance thats more 3D. Unfortunately silver should have been your highlight color which would make it difficult to change now. But even adding a little shading with a wash might help.

Thanks. The avatar is an upcoming model for an awesome superhero game called Pulp City. You can see the rest of it here.

Considering I spent less than 30 minutes on each one I wouldn't expect them to be anything more than tabletop.

The great part of really shiny silver is that on the tabletop (with all the lighting and all at the game store) they look shaded. I experimented with a wash on the large jacks and it just look too "drawn on". I'll stick to what they are right now as they work best for me. If time permits I may go back and do more, but with work, school and toddler I doubt it will happen.

Thanks the trooper were a bit easier to speed paint as there are no large flat surfaces for the washes. I'm in a rush because I want to have my army fully painted for next month's league. :)

Hmmm... that's a familiar looking scheme, just with blue instead of pink. I think it would be fun to have our fully plated Angry Elves on the table together.

Doing anything in May? ;)

Oh, I was curious how the metals would look on Houseguard. Now I know. Must paint moar elves...

I find the silver is far more effective on the troops than on the Myrmidons. The Jacks suffer a bit from having too much open space -- but that's typical of the Myrmidons.

Overall -- nice and smooth and a good direction

I hope I can make it next year. If I do I will definitely be on team Retribution.

Settled on how I will paint up my Riflemen. Also here are some pics of 2 of my repainted warcasters.

I really like the troopers and warcasters! The silver really makes them stand out. I like the glow on the Myrmidons, but the all silver paintjob makes them a bit bland because there's hardly any highlight or shadow. I would recommend a secondary color on some of the armor plates, preferably black. It would add somo contrast to the silver, and give you some area's to highlight.

Looking great, Larkin Vain. I especially like the silver on the 'casters, and the myrmidon looks quite good. I am toying with this idea myself (for reasons similar to yours...the art in FOW: ROS looks as if the myrmidons are metallic)...what silver paint did you use?

I had the same idea about the wreck makers but I was afraid they would not turn out very well. After seeing yours I now know they can work.

How did you do (put together) the crossbows on the MHSF?

How much time a week are you spending painting?

DO you have Sentinels or Invictors? I am wondering how they are going to look in the scheme with so much armor.

Varies. In that last 2 weeks maybe around 4 -5 hours a week. I get up early in the morning and paint before and during my morning conference call for work.

What paints are you using?

Here's what I do for the troops.

1. Prime black.
2. Base coat cloth areas with P3 Thrornwood Green.
3. P3 Dry brush with Traitor Green.
4. Base coat grey cloth areas with Citadel Adeptus Battlegrey
5. Base coat brown areas with P3 Idrian Flesh.
6. Base coat metal areas with Citadel Mithril Silver
7. Base coat other metal areas with Citadel Boltgun Metal.
8. Wash the whole thing with Citadel Wash Badab Black.,
9. After it dries, highlight with their base colors.

I have no words to express how great these models look. I'm a relatively new player ( I currently played khador, I didn't know RoS was an option until after I started) but just looking at the paint jobs on these models is enough to make me want to pick up the angry elves ( and I must admit i feel a sort of kindred spirit as I played Eldar in 40k). Just wow those are some great looking models.

I'm not thrilled with the shiny metal jacks, but I've yet to see a Retribution set I like (I think it's the shape of the jacks and not looking like . . . well Warjacks, they look too round and teddybear), it is still better then white (though much less steathy in the field! :P). The skill of the paints are great however, and you did a very nice job on the little energy line things.

The infantry in this color look great though! The Mage Hunter is awsome, as are the big fist guys (sorry, haven't taken the time to memorize all the Ret names yet).

I love the way your troops/casters look, but I'm not entirely sold on the jacks. I think they look great, but the wide expanses of silver make them look more like toys than realistic jacks. Most schemes I've seen have this problem on the heavies, especially, and I'm trying to noodle out what to do about that for my own heavies.

If you wanted to do something to break up those shoulderpads in this scheme, what would you do? My usual tactic (wash and highlight back) doesn't seem right for those models.

Please don't get me wrong, I think they look great. I'm just noodling over my own paint scheme, and I was inspired by yours, but I'd love your thoughts on breaking up those giant shoulderpads on my own models. That's proving to be one of the biggest hurdles to choosing a color scheme of my own.
