On Sunday we had our local Flashpoint event, using the MKII rules. (Event listing http://www.privateerpressforums.com/showthread.php?t=2497 for rules used) Because I was feeling lazy and not wanting to find all the units that I may want to play with, I used this event to test out an idea I had. Run 'jack heavy with the Butcher. Normally I use 3 heavies in my Butcher lists. For this event I thought "maybe the Butcher and 56pts of jacks". In the end I only had 51 points of Jacks and a bit of support.
The List:
The Butcher
Destroyer
Spriggan
Juggernaut
Devastator
Kodiak
Kodiak
Koldun Lord
Min. Mechanicks
War Puppy
Because of the Flashpoint rules, I wanted to keep the number of characters limited, to reduce the number of Mage Hunter points I could give up. We had a good turn out with 12 players showing up. In total I played 4 games and won all 4. This netted me the top defender award. In with all the killing, I also got the most Mage Hunter points, but this went to the guy with the next highest points.
1st Game: vs. Retribution:
Because this was the first game, there was no defender or flags. My opponent was running Kaelyssa, Manticore, Phoenix, Invictors with UA, Sentenials, 2x MHA, Narn, Nayl, and some arc nodes (I think). He was off to a good start with putting Backlash onto one of my Kodiaks, then shooting it. Would have done better, but got some bad rolls.
Final Turn: Butcher gives 2 focus to the Spriggan who is close to Kaelyssa but engaged by the Invictors and damaged Phoenix, feats and casts Full Throttle. Devastator uses Rain of Death to clear out some elves, killing 3 Mechaniks too. Kodiak 1 charges and destroys Phoenix. Kodiak 2 charges Manticore, gets off chain attack and 2hand throws the Manticore into Kaelyssa, doing 12ish damage to her. Destroyer then takes aim and drops a shell on her, ending the poor elf.
2nd Game: vs. Menoth
Somebody playing more jacks than me! Amon with 7 jacks (now 5 of them were lights but still). My opponent asks several times if I can increase the speed of my jacks. I tell him no. He makes sure to set up 9" away from my lines. I know that I'm going to take the brunt of his attack next turn, so I force the issue. I run my Devastator up to engage the Fires of Vengance. Next turn Amon feats, charges Kodiak 1 and Smites it for .5" Then the rest of the jacks start charging in. I lose the Destroyer and the closed Devastator takes a beating from the Fires and ends with a box of movement left. So a Monk comes over to finish the job. Because of Amon's charge I can get the Butcher and both Kodiaks into combat with him. Butcher feats, moves up and takes one swing, killing Amon. I was going to go with some Vent Steam, but the Butcher took care of it.
3rd Game: Vs. Retribution
Rahn, Phoenix, 2x arc nodes, Gorgon, Mage Hunter Unit, Sentinals Nayl, MHA, Battle Mages. Mage hunters plink away at my Destroyer. Rahn's Force Field deflect all my boosted shotes away from hurting anything. Nayl runs up Turn 2, engages the Butcher. A Kodiak palms his head and throws him away, killing the little guy and shutting down all of Rahn's Arc nodes. Rahn goes to put some hurt on the Butcher and fails. Then moves some things to get in the way and protect Rahn. My turn is much like my other kill turns. Butcher hands out 2 focus, feats and cast Full Throttle. Once again I need Rain of Death to clear out the lines, killing a bunch of elves, a Mechanik and my Koldun Lord. A badly hurt Kodiak, with only Movement and Left Arm charges Rahn and crushes the poor Elf.
4th Game: Vs. Cygnar
This was my Conan game. My dice were hot and my opponent was new and had nothing that could stand against my Tide of Iron. Turn 2 I killed Dirty Meg with blast damage from the Spriggan in two shots. Turn 3 I crush his jacks and Storm Guard. Turn 4 my War Puppy gets a kill. Game ended with my opponent trying to kill the Butcher and calling it when it failed.
Because my Game 4 was the last game to start, some of the other players were looking at the game and trying to figure out what they would do against my list. Even the local Press Ganger was not sure how his balanced list would fair verses this list.
My Game Plan:
Every game I used the same deployment. Both Kodiaks on point and the edge of the deployment zone. The Spriggan and Devastator flanking them at about 8". Destroyer and Juggernaut flanking them at about 6". Destroyer was on the same side as the Spriggan so that I could take advantage of the flares if needed. Butcher set up in the middle of the "Flying V" as it got called later on. Mechaniks in a line at the back. Puppy near the Butcher and Koldun Lord near the Destroyer to feed it focus. Turn 1 Cast Iron Flesh on the Butcher and upkeep it for the rest of the game. Kodiaks advance and Vent Steam, creating a nice 6" area for the Butcher to hide behind. Advance and cast Full Throttle as needed. Feat for extra killing goodness.
Overall:
I only cast Iron Flesh and Full Throttle all game. Never needed to put Fury on anything, because focus was better spent on attacks. Butcher stayed back and let the jacks do the killing. Only game that I felt was close was the first game with Backlash on my jacks. Ended up with a big medal that I wish could open bottles. Because that would be sweet.:D
