View Full Version : Beast of Infantry?

As Im a very new player (played Khador for a few games and switched to Legion...havnt played a game with Legion yet), Ive been wondering if a solid beast list would work at all. Im talking only beasts, no infantry. I have a Shepherd for my 15 and 25 point list for fury management but other than that I have nothing else for solos or infantry. I use Lylyth1 but have no other casters. Yes Im short on cash, so your suggestions to "buy more models right meow" wont help :D. I just need a professional opinion on my chances.
Does Legion require infantry to win or can I just run a Warbeast army? Can I play my Warbeast-Only army competitively or should I play it just for fun?
EDIT: Um...the title is supposed to read Beasts or Infantry. My fingers type ahead of my brain quite frequently. Bleah.

My legion friend goes beast heavy constantly. The only time he lets up is when hes using swordsmen + incubi. Of course, he's using vayl, ethag or abby.
Lylyth is a fine caster but with only 5 fury, make sure you maximize the management via shepherds and forsaken

anyway, yes you can do all beasts. however, you really need a few forsakens or a higher level fury stat. Go with Vayl because she's like $10, or stick with lylyth because a forsaken to add to her list is $8.
last call to arms, i shot for the all tooth and claw medal. i didn't get it because i couldnt get in a full 15 games, but i did really really well. the primary list was:
Vayl
Carnivean
Typhon
Angelius
Seraph x 2
Nephilim
Shredder x 2
I love this list because of the diversity of models in it.
It's mostly about knowing what needs to be forced and what doesn't need to be forced. Then you need to be able to know how to go over your fury intake. One way is to know who needs to frenzy. You're making this decision in the maintenance phase so it's not so hard, but plan ahead by having shredders frenzy and position them not facing anything, throwing them in terrain, or putting beasts in position to frenzy on enemies.
Leaving them to frenzy on enemies usually means it will be killed by the enemy. that can be good or equally bad. The bad is you lost a beast. a carnivean, typhon, or shredder. the good is that it may be diverted resources from something else and now you no longer have to manage the fury.
EDIT: in mk1 i was also able to kill off excess fury under cat and mouse feat by having the nephilim or carnivean take freestrikes. you can still do that now if you shell out for vayl with her leash spell.
Remember, it's not a game of making point for point back. Your carnivean, typhon, and seraph may need to die to get the angelius to assassinate something.
Ultimately, yes you can play this competitively but you're going to need experience. What i would run in mk2:
eThagrosh
Typhon
Carnivean
Angelius
Seraph
Nephilim
Raek
Harrier
Shredder

Honestly I really hate how the Thag model looks. Preferably I like to play with models that I find aesthetically pleasing.
I enjoy the thought of running a fragile little ranged support caster with some big nasties. Your point on fury management is one of my biggest concerns though.
I figured I could do a kind of "mini-swarm" with the Shredders on infantry, solos, and light jacks/beasts and do relatively well with that. Rabid alone (1 fury) would make them good for that job and pretty easy to manage.
As for the heavies, I figured on using the Typhon mainly as an anti-infantry choice and backup for taking down other heavies. The Carny...well, the Carny is just a big beefsteak full of rage and hunger. He would be used as such.

A) buy forsakens. they're $8. if you have no shame, you can sit in front of a strip mall and beg for change saying that you need it to make a phone call. should take about 2-3 hours. i've done this before as a teenager.
B) don't play over 35 points if you're dead set on pLylyth and going all beasts.
if you want to play over 35 without support solos then go Vayl or Saeryn.

Operating out of the battle box mainly?
Two good fury effective beasts are the Angelius and the Nephilim. Angelius is good because he can sniper solos like manhunters with his ranged attack and doesn't require much forcing. At most you'll need to force him twice a turn. Nephilim can give free charges when your caster is using the animus and may net an additional attack.

There is also the shepherd if you are planning on going beast heavy. She is able to pull all of the fury off of one of your beasts, thus letting Rhyas and Lylth run even more beasts.

Yeah Ill be picking up a Forsaken next. Ive really been at a loss as to which beast to go for next (I really do like the thought of running an all beast army), but Seraph or Angelius are under serious consideration. Just to clear up any confusion btw, here are the models I currently own. Probably should have listed these in the first post...
Lylyth1
3 Shredders
Carnivean
Typhon
Teraph
Shepherd
Most of those I got in a lot (for cheap!) but I just got the Typhon and Shepherd for xmas from the wifey.
On a side note, I work at Walmart. Even as an hourly supervisor, I get paid peanuts. Therefore I buy my models very slowly. Thanks for the tips though! Any help you can provide this poor helpless nub will set me ahead of where I am now.
Buy Vayl.
Shes pretty cheap and runs all beasts incredibly well.

Im in the same boat as you captain, i like the cheapness of mostly beast army and the idea of it.
My little starting army will probably be a
vayl
carnivean
4 shredders
Neph soldier
forsaken
shepard
Ah yes limiting our armies to what we were able to get 2nd hand for cheap :O gatta love it.
