View Full Version : Magic Bullet and Structures

Ok, so I searched a bit and couldnt find a definitive answer on this one. The scenario is as follows.

I'm playing Mohsar and my opponent is playing Cptn Caine. I put up a wall of pillars to block his line of sight and try to protect my guys and im very close to the pillars. To counter this he puts Magic bullet on two units of gun mages who shoot the structures, automatically hitting, doing no damage to the pillars but triggering magic bullet which arcs to the guys behind the wall causing a pow 12.

After looking at the spell description and the rules I couldnt find anything that says this is wrong, but nothing that really says its write. I'm not an expert on the rules yet so I'd like to confirm this because its a crazy smart move. The spell says it triggers when the model directly hits (doesnt say vs what) and that a model within 4" takes a hit (so no LOS needed I assume). Is there some targeting issue I'm missing?

You are correct in that. No LOS needed from the shooter. However, it does need LOS from the target. Since the spell dictates that the point of origin is the model hit, I would think you have to hit someone not just a structure. If can be a friendly model, but it needs to be a model to trigger Magic Bullet I believe.

But just making sure, you said two UNITS of Gun Mages. The spell affects a single MODEL not a unit. So he can toss it on a pair of Gun Mages within the same unit and each of their next shots can trigger Magic Bullet, but the rest of the unit does not.

And you do not automatically hit the Pillar except in melee. At ranged, it was DEF 5. This is notable because you can still roll snake eyes and miss even an immobile object.

It doesn't need LOS, as it's not an attack - it simply generates a damage roll.

Point of Origin is there for things like shields and Shieldwall, and I'm not sure how that would go - I'd say go with the worse option (for Caine) that you don't get the back arc.

But other than that, it does look legal to me. Kudos to your opponent for some creative thinking.

Structures are hit automatically by any kind of attack, as long as you're in range. (Prime, p. 89, upper left)

Do structures count as 'models'? If they do it's legal, if they don't then it isn't.

Aren't ranged attacks against structures required to have at least POW 14 to even make the attack?

No, structures are structures. But as Kadris has pointed out, Magic Bullet apparently does not require a model to be hit, but merely for the attack to directly hit something.

No, they just won't do any damage if their Pow is less and they don't fulfil any of the other conditions.

Magic Bullet specifies that the (secondary) target has to be "within 4" of the model hit" - so if structures aren't considered models it is at least arguable that it is impossible for Magic Bullet to choose any target for the damage roll.

Ngh, you're right, Aetou, sometimes I'm just blind.

So, yeah, no Magic Bullet.

I'm not quite following this. Does this mean you can target a structure/piece of terrain or not?

Thou shalt not commit thread necromancy per the forum rules. If you still have a question on this thread, start a new thread to ask it.

Structures are indeed not models, so Magic Bullet will not trigger if you shoot a structure while it's active. Terrain in general is not targetable, unless you have designated it as a damageable structure.

And thread necro is bad, mkay?
