View Full Version : How are the Pigs doing in tournaments?

Just wonder how the swine are doing holding their own? I have buying them up and painting them to prep for play, but just feel very, very, very, limited in the selection of models I can use with them, and the flexibility in the lists that can really be run. Just wondering others thoughts on them, and how they are going playing in legues and tournaments. Thanks.

They are very limited, but I have had some success with them. If nothing else, they help you become a better player, as you learn to do more with less options. I don't think they're as good as gators are, but ironically I think Lord Carver is actually a good match up against the gators. No knock down and really high arm on his battle group, plus the ability to just plow through wounds.
But against a more balanced normal faction list, you will face some tough match ups. It'll be fun, but don't expect to dominate the local scene with them or anything.

If you think of the faction as minions, not as farrow or gators individually, its opens up a lot more options for a two list format. Like maybe you bring farrow to fight jack/beast heavy lists and bring gators to chompy chomp on infantry/ranged heavy lists...

Didn't know if you played two list tournaments you could use gators for one, and pigs for the second, lol

Most tournaments will let you do just that. All the big cons do, for example.

Its like how you can play different contracts for mercs. For a little while, you could intermix mercs and minions. I think this was before minions became a true faction and was just a transitional ruling thats no longer in effect. Someone correct me here if they know otherwise.

That is good to know, would love to have one 35 point pigs list and one 35 gator list as my two options for tournaments for AdeptCon

I'm playing a tournament in my local group right now. 2 lists, 35 pts. I'm running Barny and Carver... quite successfully so far, though I wish I had had Calaban when it started instead of having two beatstick casters.

I play in a 35 point Steam Roller 2011 tommorrow with my Pigs. I'll be Running:
Dr Arkadius Mad Science (Tier 2)
Dr. Arkadius, 3x Warhogs, 3x Gunboars, 1/2 Bone Grinders, Full Bone Grinders
Lord Carver's Golden Horde (Tier 4)
Lord Carver, 2x Gunboar, Warhog, R&B, 2x Full Brigands
If I lose it will be my fault. Or my dice. I've had some horrible dice lately.

I've only been to one Steam Roller where Minions played (I did not bring mine) and the Lord Carver Farrow list came 3rd (after me Second with Cygnar and Cryx first). A good selection of other Factions present, so I was pretty impressed that the pigs were able to make that placement.
I think Minions as a whole are pretty competitive right now, although obviously mileage will vary depending on how well opponents know what they can do (as limited options mean that it is easier to know what you're doing against them).
I've been playing Minions mainly for fun at present, but I've won all of my games with Carver so far. I've only played Arkadius twice so far, and lost the first but won the second.

Yarp! Only the faction needs to be the same, just like playing Mercs in a tourney. You can jump between the pacts and contracts as much as you want with your two lists.

In official steam rollers, this is the case - tournament organisers are of course free to make up their own rules...

If they do not allow it, they're simply cowards of the Minion wrath! :)

Well I went, and played 3 games and lost them all.
Turn 1. Cryx player. He has Eskarre, and Venathrax.
You would think he would take Venathrax, and I expected him. Also add in that this is the first tourny at this store and the rules for Vet players was to "take it down a notch" Against Venatrax I've had good use taking him out with a dialed War Hog, so I took Arkadius.
So he took Eskarre, Full THralls (no ua) Arc node, Seether, DJ, Gorman, Tartarsauce, and Saxxon Orrik.
The Death Jack won the game for him. Course having him in your teeth and you can't do anything helped my opponent. I conceded when he killed the last WB I had.
Second game. Cygnar, General Nemo.
I was ready to get some, so I thought I'd take Dr. Arkadius again.
General Nemo. Rowdy, Centurion, 2x Chargers, B13, Arlan, 3 Storm Smiths, 2x GMCA, Squire.
I moved a fraction of a inch too far foward to CG Rowdy. 2 Chargers on Nemo's Feat turn with LOS to Dr. Arkadius.. it was a Cygnar win.
Third Game. Carver Versus Circle.
I took Carver even though I'd swore to myself that I was going to run Arkaduis, when I should have taken Arkadius. He ran Kromac
Kromac, Pureblood, Stalker, Gorgax, Lord of the Feast, Full Skinwalkers, Blackclad, Druid Wilder.
For the first time ever, My gunboars let me down. Repeated shots went arry, and when my final Slam that would have knocked the Pureblood over Kromac 1/2 inch behind him failed. Combined with a Lord of the Feast that hit Carver 3 times, doing 10 damage to him on none boosted rolls against armor 20, I left the game on the table and Kromac snapped it up.
I had played so horrible I was the last place player, Combined with the Cryx guy from above dropping out, I had a 4th turn bye, and called it a night.
I should have loaded up Carver in my first game, and the second, and Arkadius in the third. I feel I'd have much better win lose ratio to report then.

Seems like people are have mixed results, this to me is a good sign, because they seem to be able to compete.
