Heya...I was curious as to whether any new players have found the local Pressgangers and/or their legion of loyal players to be distant to new players. Ive tried repeatedly to get games in, but have mostly be rebuffed by an elitist attitude.
Sure I play only small games at the moment, but Im also a newbie looking to get some experience before I make a decision on what I want to expand my army into.
Is this kind of thing normal among Warmachine/Hordes players?
Gotta say, if thats the case perhaps I should go back to the loving arms of GW. I had given that up for awhile due to my interest in WM/H, but if a person cant find their niche in the local clique then there isnt much point in playing.

That seems abnormal when compared both to my personal experience as a newbie, and other people I've talked to. I know when I started the local players were happy to help me learn the ropes. (Though they never went easy on me, which I'm thankful for. You learn more from losses than victories.)

I hate that things are like that for you. I've never experienced this amongst WM/H gamers. Although we don't have a local Pressganger, I try to be as inviting into the game as possible. I will say that the whole purpose of the Pressgangers, as I understand it, is to be good ambassadors of the game, and act on behalf of Privateer Press to invite people into the game and help them get settled. If yours is not living up to this, perhaps a polite conversation with them, or an email to the Quartermaster, are not out of line.

Best of luck to you, and know that the elitist clique is a minority as far as I know. If you lived around DC, I'd throw down a game any time you wanted.

Not my experience either. My local PP people tend to be good folk who are happy for new players.

I certainly can't say that's my experience here in Atlanta. I don't play with the Pressgangers that often cause my crew is pretty self-contained and self-supported, but the few times I have, they've been great. Very inclusive and supportive in general.

I got into the game about 3 months ago and had a more then welcoming experience at my FLGS. I didn't even have an army the first month I played, and in that time some one allowed me to play with their Seaforge Commission force and another guy split his Khador force with me for a team game. They also let me fully proxy a Troll force for a game to see if it was the force for me or not.

So I think you just got stack with a few bad apples, as my experience, and most that I've heard of, has been more then pleasant. Are there any other LGSs you can go to?

Really? Your Press Ganger has been unwelcome to you? Please drop PPS_Jack an e-mail about it including the name of the Press Ganger.

The other issue could be that right now, the Hordes MK II Field Testing is going on, and lot's of people are kinda shelving Warmachine until MK II comes out (which is today).

I expect that once MK II comes out, things will pick up for you.

Id thought thought thats what Pressgangers were for too. Not sure I want to push the issue, but if I wanted to get ahold of the Quartermaster how might I do so?

Most folks here in Boise are waiting for the Mk II decks. I do, however, know of at least one player who said he'd play you when you were here Tuesday but you left.

As I mentioned on our Yahoo discussion group, the holidays have been busy for many folks, and most of the regulars want to do more than "just play" -- it's very much a social thing. Also, continue to use the Yahoo group to set up games. I generally play about once a week and that's on Thursdays.

Feel free to join in the conversation when you see us hanging out. I'm sorry if you feel unwelcome, but that's not what we're about.

I was there yesterday, although I did not have any of my Warmachine/Hordes with me as I was hoping to play Firestorm Armada with a friend.

But, I think it is worth pointing out that a lot of the regulars that I know and game with at the store have each others phone numbers, hang out in the same bars a lot, and email each other pretty regularly. There is a large group of us that contact one another for games ahead of time and go to the store to play the game. If someone has prearranged a game then they are most likely going to turn you down if you ask them for a game and they are waiting for thier opponent to get there.

There is a few people that hang out a fair bit and plays a lot of random games. If you are looking for random games then your best bet is to get to know these people. Also, try attending any of the events (there is a Warmachine Tournament coming up) and get to know people.

Jumping into a gaming group generally takes time.

It's been posted on the bulletin board at the store. I'm pretty sure it's been buried by LFG notices.

You may be right, Bobaferret...perhaps Im just not trying hard enough. I try not to sound needy when Im there but I did make my intentions clear on the Yahoo Group that I was looking for a game.
Anyways, think Ill go back to 40k for a bit till MKII settles down.
Im not saying Ive never found a game there. I did have a couple shots at some small games when I first started testing the waters, but since then its just been really hard to get one going.
Im sorry if I offended you or made you angry. I just felt there was kind of a distant attitude among most players and Im not the only one in the area who feels that way.
Thanks!

Not offended or angry, just want to make sure you're able to find games.

The other thing to understand is that a lot of us started playing Warmachine together nearly 5 years ago. And as Cannibalbob mentioned, there are a lot of folks who do things away from the LGS.

We'll be moving WM/H night to Mondays at some point... I just need to check when the Flames of War guys are moving to Thursdays.

And if there are other players in the area looking for games, feel free to point them at the Yahoo group and the social group here.

I'm sorry you've been faced with such a thing. Our gaming group loves it when new players show up and I even got a proper demo with the pressganger at the time when I started. People I know that play (aside from the one or two elitists that might show up at a tourny, everyone is generally very friendly and welcoming.

And I will agree that right now the gaming is tough, there were just 3 games the last hordes/warmachine day, taking a long while mostly because people couldn't figure out if they wanted to play MkI or MkII. Once the rules are set in....paper....people might be more willing to play!

You are in good hands if Bobaferret is close by.

Have patience the WM society is in an odd state with all the changes.

Think back to 40k pre-v 4. I was there and it was not fun. All the moaning about the new rules etc.

Trust me and the rest who tell you,
"You will not REGRET WM/HORDES"

Check back in a few weeks when I (WE) post pics from the best con in New England, Templecon. IT ROCKS

As a new player from the same area, my experience could not be more different. The second that I decided to pick up the game, they were incredibly welcoming and helpful. They made the transition as seamless as possible. They let me borrow models, gave me helpful tips, and even demonstrated how I could win when I was playing against them. Of course, now that I have acheived my bearings, the gloves are off and forgotten, but they still remain a supportive and helpful group. Maybe if you approached the group from a more social point of view and in the pursuit of help and mutually enjoyable games, you would find more success than a "just play" attitude.

Well, um...my army is pretty darned small at the moment. I added it up and Ive got a total of 31 points, with Lylyth. Gonna work on that when I get the chance.
When is it, anyways?

When I started, I got that elitist crap too. I banded together with other new players, learned the ropes, and rocked thier faces in a tournament not long after.
I then wouldn't let them forget how they treated us after. It's a f'n game and now matter how well you perform at it, it doesn't mean s***.
Elitists aren't worth your time.

Wow, that's a pretty big sentence to be throwing around, especially basing it off the experience of one gamer. Did you even read my post? The local PG is not a problem, and by no means is she rogue.

Getting into a new group can be a somewhat tense if not socially awkward thing, so the occasional misunderstanding is to be expected.

But Boise seems to have good people. I wouldn't take anything to heart. They just have a large group of long time players.

In fact, if you still have trouble, PM me, as I have a cunning plan on how to get into the good graces almost immediately.

And with mark 2 WM decks out, people will be interested in playing WM very soon. I know I am.

I would also put out there that it depends on how you approach people for games. As a PG, i'm always up to show new players how to play and learn their army. However, some new folks either lack the socil skills to meet people well, or are standoffish when people offer assistance.

So it might just be a matter of oil and water not mixing at first.

The PGr at my LGS is a complete D-Bag... When he isnt building us terrain or organizing events he is.

1. Playing
2. Hanging out giving rules advice
3. Painting his or other peoples stuff
4. Going out to eat with other players
5. Jaming out on some guitar hero game (he actually sings pretty good for a old fart)
6. Running Demos
7. Sleeping
8. Cigarette dispenser

Not necessarly in that order.

Keep in mind that the PG has a lot of stuff on his/her plate. 99.99% of Warmahordes players are pretty friendly just get to know them. Only Cryx bite...;)

Let's not turn this thread into a "bag on PGs fest." If there are serious issues with any member of the Press Gang, email jack@privateerpress.com

In terms of what's going on in the Boise gaming group, we've addressed the issues and it looks like the Captain will have a few opponents to choose from on Tuesday.
