OK, so tonight, and in honor of getting the rulebook, I sat down and played a pair of 25 point games with a couple of Cygnar players. The list looked like this:
Grand Scrutator Severius
-Vanquisher
-Revenger
Paladin of the Order of the Wall
Temple Flameguard (10)
Holy Zealots (10)
Choir of Menoth (6)
The idea was to take Prime only models, in anticipation of the Resurgence Tournament coming up at the end of the month. Though it is not a restriction in the format, since we had the books available it is what we went with.
I faced a Stryker army first, with an Ironclad, Defender, Journeyman Warcaster, Arcane Tempest Gun Mages, and Long Gunners (6). It was a bloody battle, and I lost 6 TFG and a Zealot on the second turn. It didn't look good, but I was able to win the attrition battle. It took a while, but around turn 6 I was able to take Stryker down with a Paladin, and I ended up with what was left of my army on his side of the table, I think he had a very hurt Defender and one ATGM left after Stryker fell.
The next game was against Haley with a Defender, Lancer, Mechanics (6), two units of Stormblades, and Eiryss. The math may have been off by one, or so we discovered afterward. Ashes to Ashes was fairly effective at removing Stormblades and Eiryss on one flank, and the Vanquisher and Temple Flameguard, as well as the Zealots, were effective at taking down the right flank. Turn three he left Haley out in the open and I was able to get a Vanquisher in range and a boosted attack and damage roll on Haley to take her down to two damage, and on his Maintenance Phase the fire didn't go out.
Has anyone else been experiencing things like this? I am not really surprised, since most of my army lists start with TFG, Zealots, and Choir, then I add 'caster, 'jacks, and solos to taste. I have been building that way for the last 5 or so years, and I am glad to see that they still work so well together.
Overall I am pretty happy with MK II, the rules are solid, and I can't wait to try out Cygnar and Khador to see what I can do with them.
