View Full Version : Problems with metalic paints?

For the last few weeks I was trying in vain to get "molten Bronze" from my local store. And eventually got a response that it was "impossible to get"
Thinking I would be a bit sneaky, I then ordered a pack of the Circle of Orboros paint set....and eventually got the same response

The store owner states that P3 has a problem with their metallics as of late where the consistency of the paint gels up (becoming snot like)

I haven't heard mention of this anywhere else, and wondering if the store owner was wrong, or if the problem was corrected?. I was actually considering getting the Skorne paint set today (with quicksilver and gold) but of course don't want to make a purchase if a third of the paints will become useless

I know that in the past that has been a problem with some batches of P3 metallics. I don't know if it's an ongoing problem or not, though, and I've got some P3 metallics that I've been using for a couple of years that have been fine (although I generally prefer Vallejo or GW paints for metallics).

Rhulic Gold and Molten Bronze are the only paints in the metallics range that are problematic.
The rest are fine. Both of the above colours have been discontinued until further notice.

For a match that is close to the P3 colours, Rhulic Gold is almost the same as GW Shining Gold, and Molten Bronze is closest to GW Tin Bitz.

Interesting. I've got bottles of both of those colors that I've been using for over a year with no problems. I guess I got lucky and got samples from a good batch.

I went and snaked all the good Rhulic Gold from the LGS before it got discontinued myself. I have 2 bottles.
I have never seen a good pot of Molten Bronze; it was always 'Molten Goop'.

Rhulic Gold is a little lighter than Shining Gold, and it's the same with Molten Bronze/Tin Bitz.

I generally like the Citadel metallics best right now myself, though Reaper does a fine job as well with the stuff I've worked with. P3 metallics aren't bad at all, however.

Blighted Gold is also in the "can't buy it, might be discontinued forever, nobody really knows, would be nice if they said one way or the other since a lot of people painted their armies with it" basket.

I prefer the vallejo game color metalics over the P3s. Most of the metalic P3 paints I've picked up have separated and become goopy. Not sure what the cause is, probably just a bad batch of paint. I mainly use a mix of P3 and VGC paints, and just picked up the Reaper Master series paints.

of my experiences with different metallics, I have to agree with all the people who say use the GW/Citadel line. They all provide excellent coverage and thin out well. They also have a decent amount to choose from, but Reaper Master Series has one of the largest selections with different colored metallics, but I personally don't like their metallics as much, though the rest of the RMS selection is awesome as well.

I have one. But it's decent; not great. I generally prefer GW metals.

So am i to understand nothing "official" has been said about the metallics? that Privateer amdits they have been discontinued, when/if they'll be back and so on?

Well my FLGS restocked thier P3 paints, still no Molten Bronze or Rhulic gold....but they did restick Blighted Gold...so think it's only those two colors that are "out"

still hoping there is an annoucement or some such that can be watched for updates

It is official. Although I have also only read about the problems with those two specific colours in forum threads and such, a little extra looking (at the official Privateer Press Product Sheet) reveals that both Molten Bronze and Rhulic Gold have the price marked as "Out of Print" instead of $3.50

I very much prefer the P3 Metallics over the GW ones as I find they flow better.

Blighted Gold should still be available.

We don't have a date for Molten Bronze and Rhulic Gold availability, which is why they're listed as "out of print."

Thank you very much for giving us an "offical" word, i really do appreciate it

does "out of print" mean it's been permanently discontinued, or does Privateer intend to re-release them in the future (soon? far?)

Does Reaper have a Metallic range? I used to use their paints prior to P3's. I always liked the little head in the bottle. ;)

they do, but their silvers are pretty terrible. I use to use them, but I prefer P3's over them, and to be honest, I'm not a big fan of P3's either. GW is the only one I've used that I like (never used vallejo). Reaper metallics really lose their metallic effect when you dullcoat them, even if you gloss first.

Another good alternative is the Tamiya Paint line, they have less choice in the metallic department but they work quite well. But i recommend only there metallic, for the rest they ain't worth **** for a good covering.

I usually stick to GW paints for the metallics and inks, Vallejo for most other things. I can't readily compare P3 to the others as I was unaware that they were even available in Vienna until recently and so far I only own Sanguine Base and Coal Black, both of which I love, especially Coal Black.

But in general, the consensus among most painters around here seems to be that GW did something right with their metallics, and I must say I agree. Vallejo metallics have an odd quality to them, they just don't seem to be quite right.

This is really pretty simple, they don't have those paint available right now and they don't know when they will be available again.

It has been like that for year. Sadly........

Well at least the Circle of Orboros paint back has returned (with a substitution for Molten Bronze)

And I apoloigize, tried re-reading the threads, and which GW pain is the better replacement for Rulic Gold? shining or burninshed? or other (non GW)?

Valejo is the best for a Rhulic Gold Substitute. They have a Brass type colour that is really good but I cannot think of the name...

here's a thought...maybe PP should look for an alternative supplier for the metallics so they don't have holes in thier paint lines

surprised there aren't more responses, I guess the main question is rhulic gold a "bright" gold or a "dark" gold?

Rhulic Gold = (almost) GW Shining Gold
Molten Bronze = (almost) GW Brazen Brass

Ignore my comment about Molten Bronze, and Tin Bitz....Brazen Brass was the one I was thinking of.

A friend spoke to one of Privateer's artists at Gencon, mentioning jealously that he seemed to have plenty of Rhulic Gold (he was working on the Menoth Battle Engine), and the artist replied that P3 had reformulated their metallic paints, and they would be released before too long.

whew glad you said so, was going to start using Tin Bitz on my Steelheads...of course I don't have any Brazen Brass

Thebarbalag gives me hope, though makes me wonder if I should wait or not, after all they used a substitute color for Orboros paint pacl, would they have done so if a re-release was around the cornor? Any way to get a confirmation of this?

Rob Hawkins mentioned the same thing at Lock n' Load; that it won't be long before we see the new formula metallics released.

I'll give them a try once they are released, but it'll be tough to compete with the GW line, as IMHO, GW's metals are the best I've tried.

I'cve heard the same thing before, but I'm kind of an unimaginative "paint by numbers" kind of guy, so I kind of try to follow the guides in the back of the army books

well another 4 weeks and trying to keep the thread alive....only thing different this time is I have started painting my Cygnar models...don't know if now that the Vessel of Judgement has been released there has been any new word...

Panda with issues...
09-30-2011, 01:47 AM
The Vallejo Model air metallics are by far and away the best metallics I've used, and I don't use an airbrush. I used to like the GW metallics best, and don't rate the VGC/VMC metals at all. Can't say I've ever used the Reaper ones.

But yeah, the Model air metallics have made as much of an impact in the way I paint as the wet palette and devlan mud.

completely caught off guard but the wait is over

went to my FLGS to pick up a Halberdier blister, and ntoiced the P3 rack looked a bit "too full"

sure enough looks like Rhulic gold has returned!

now I can paint my gold Cygnar and bronze steelheads!
