I am a brand-spanking new player. I was thinking of picking up the Retribution or Cygnar, but I am not sure yet.

However, I drew up a 25pt list, and I was wondering if folks would give me some pointers on improving it and increasing its functionality.

Vyros
Manticore
Dawnguard Sentinels
Officer & Standard
Soulless Escort
MH Strikeforce
MG Commander
Arcanist
Dawnguard Scyir
Griffon
25pt

Any and all help would be appreciated.

Imho in order to get full advantage of he's spells you need atleast two jacks under him.

Well Vyros is kinda tricky to run. Here are few tricks:
Manticore is great with Vyros: Manuvere him with avenger and mobility to enemy's flank. Allocate two (three) focus, Mobility Feat, trample and boost hits.
Fenix also works nicely: Manuver it in, feat, combust and boost, boost, boost. :)

I'd suggest to scrap the Scyir and griffon under him. Not becouse the combo is bad, but because he's expensive for such a small game and since you have only one group of dawnguard it's not too hard to manuvere around them.

...Firstly, I'm no expert on Vyros, or Dawnguard, or Mage Hunters, but...

At 25pts, if you are using several jacks, I think it is a good move to focus on one main offensive unit... not several minimum units.

Also, Vyros gives good bonuses to jacks in his battlegroup, so at this points level (and in general) you want to put any warjacks you have into his battlegroup. Additionally, Vyros has flank, which means you want him to be attacking models that are engaged by your jacks... this is most easily achieved with reach jacks (the more the better).

So, I'd move all the jacks into Vyros' battlegroup, and perhaps consider upgrading the Manticore to a Phoenix (reach, combustion, arcnode).
I'd also drop one of the units to max out the other...
I'd keep the Dawnguard (for theme) and if you are worried about/want some extra ranged attacks, then you could squeeze in a unit of Stormfall archers (at the expense of either the soulless, arcanist or scyir).

So... something like this:
Dawnlord Vyros
Griffon
Manticore
Dawnguard Sentinels (Leader and 9 Grunts)
2 Soulless Escort (or a Scyir, or upgrade the manticore to a phoenix)
Dawnguard Sentinel Officer & Standard
Stormfall Archers (Leader and 3 Grunts)
Arcanist

How about this:

Dawnlord Vyros
* Chimera
* Manticore
Dawnguard Sentinels (Leader and 9 Grunts)
* Griffon
* Dawnguard Sentinel Officer & Standard
* Soulless Escort
Arcanist

Seem strong enough for a semi-competitive environment?

Seem strong enough for a semi-competitive environment?Seems quite reasonable, give it a try.
I think you'd probably find a second Griffon more useful than the Chimera though.

Well, I switched it up a bit.

Right now, I am going for this @ 25pt:

Vyros
- Hydra
- Pheonix
Full Invictors w/ UA

To bump to 35pt, add:
Eiryss
2x Snipers
Arcanist
Soulless Escort (to Invictors)
Hyrda -> Pheonix

Not sure just how competitive it will be, but it should look real nice and gives me all the models I like.

Any thoughts on if it will stand up in a semi-competitive environment?

I'm not sure I'd upgrade to a second Phoenix, just because each jack offers something unique... though IMO the Phoenix is gold with Vyros.

It's core should hold up well, any deficiencies should be easily covered with alterations of the solos/support - you can easily sub in any of the other solos.

Overall, I think it should perform very well.

Awesome! I loved all the models I chose and I have heard a few good things about my choices. I ordered them today and am eager to get them, paint them, and play! I will post some pictures when I get them painted up.

A good start, but dont worry so much about jack marshalling. It's a nice ability but it's real tricky to make it work consistently.

I would stick with the sentinels and the UA
Pick drop the snipers for a lower point game and go for some mage hunter assassins

And Narn.

Having 2 MHA, Narn and Eiryss going wide on a flank always seems to worry my opponents and they spend a lot of resources trying to stop them.

In the meantime, they will have several wrecking balls coming up the center.
