Hello there!

I'm soon going to be selling of some stuff and landing myself some hobby-money, and am feeling that I might need some help on what unit to get.

I currently own:

pLylyth
Vayl
pThagrosh
Saeryn

min Legionnaires
max Spawning Vessel

4 Shredders
2 Harriers
Nephilim Bolt Thrower
Carnivean
Ravagore

2 Deathstalkers
2 Forsaken
Warchief
3 Spell Martyrs

I am planning on purchasing the following:

Typhon
Legion Tokens

And, this is where I need help, one of the following:

Striders + UA
max Hex Hunters
min Raptors

My meta is mostly Warmachine with a few Hordes armies scattered. I was first considering the Striders due to their adaptability helping me dealing with lots of infantry or putting in a few precise CRA's when needed. But then the Hex Hunters would give me a real versitile unit, being able to both slaughter normal infantry and also throw out a few POW13's that stop Special Attacks. And then there's Raptors, and they are, you know, Raptors. Would be nice with for instance pThagrosh for POW12 Weaponmaster cavalry.

Can you guys help me a bit with deciding on which unit to take?

I would say:

1. Hex Hunters
2. Raptors
3. Striders + UA

With the above I think you could use any of them with every Warlock you have so it comes down to who you are playing. The issue is Bayal is nice to add to Hex Hunters and Anyssa Ryvaal is good to fill out Raptors, plus you should go full Raptors and Striders without UA are not as good. If you absolutely forced me to pick just one that was great on its on without a UA or Solo = Hex Hunters. If you had Bethayne it would be even easier to pick the Hex Hunters.

To be honest you can't go very wrong with any of them.

I'd get either striders or raptors long before you pick up Hex hunters, especially since you don't have Bethayne.

Yea I also vote for raptors (and add a Shephard to the list aswell)

Would you get the Striders without the UA? If you add in UAs then you add in Bayal too and for Raptors maybe Anyssa Ryvaal. In that case I would pick Raptors and Anyssa.

This is a matter of cost so the unit size and UA's mentioned is the format they will be bought in. :)

Striders+UA definitely beat Hex Hunters without Bayal and Minimum Raptors, IMO.

No I wouldn't. When I say striders I mean striders + UA, but raptors doesn't necessarily mean annyssa

I'm definitely voting for Striders+UA as well. They will never let you down :)

Unless your opponent runs a list with nothing but Karchev and heavies, or a pButcher theme list where it's almost entirely heavies and heavy infantry.... but that's less common ;)

I'd advise for the Striders + UA. They're a very solid set piece that really do have a use in just about any list. (As said by TG, unless it's a crapload of heavies you're fighting) They really shine most when clearing out numerous infantry squads. In addition the extra movement granted by Deathstalkers should help with Strider guerilla warfare shenanigans.

Second place would go to the Raptors. Great solo hunters, and assuming they can hit their (effective) weapon master bows can put the ranged hurt on a living warcaster. Mobility is also always a plus.

Looking at your note about a mostly Warmachine meta though, I'd definitely recommend the Striders. It seems like most (or at least a lot) of Warmachine is taking solid infantry lists, and Striders would be invaluable for this.

Also seconding the comment above for Shepherds. Why don't you have any already? D:

Even then, an effective POW 18 (RAT 15, CRA) at effective range 19"(assuming movement by striders) with 15" (after reform) end distance from target, effectively ignoring terrain (and therefore possibly having a forest between you and the target), every turn is not a horrible waste.

Thanks guys, I have settled on Striders + UA as many of you have voiced your approval for. :)

On the note of the Sheperd, I simply haven't had any available to buy and most times when I'm designing a list I feel like the extra point to get a Forsaken isn't to hard to find. I've been planning on picking up a Sheperd and a Feralgeist/Swamp Gobbers at the same time.

But I know you know this, this is mostly directed at the OP.

That was a reply to "You'll never be sorry you took them". In those extreme cases, you'd really wish they were a Scythean ;)

My most common opponent was on a Karchev brick kick for a while, so yeah...

Actually I'm playing my friend tonight and planning to run with Karchev :) (I play Khador too).

Would like to bring up one last thing.

I'm weghing Typhon against a Scythean.

I'm leaning heavily towards Typhon due to the model being so much cooler, and I'm already packing a Ravagore+Carnivean.
Also my main 'locks for the moment being pThagrosh, Vayl and pLylyth makes me feel like Typhon will find a good home.

Ya know, I may be alone in this, but when I first bought typhon, I had a streak of around 15 games where I didn't leave listbuilding without him. Lately, though, I take him with more specific 'locks, and less as a carniviean+. Specifically, he goes with the thagroshes, vayl, rhyas (rearguard!!!), and if I played Absylonia more frequently*, I might with her too. Dunno what the popular opinion on the last one is though.

To your original point, though, I'm a little surprised that fewer votes weren't cast for the hex hunters. They've always made an impact when I field them, and I've found their versatility to be invaluable.

*nothing against her, but the first time I played her I got wrecked so hard I get nervous just building a list with her.

First off, while many may disagree with me, if you like the aesthetics of Typhon more then that's an immediate point towards buying him. In a hobby where a lot of enjoyment is gotten simply from model construction/painting, there's something to be said to the visual appeal of a purchase. =)

Keep in mind a lot of Typhon's point cost is justified in his versatility. You're buying 3x POW 14 sprays a turn that hurt, Critical Pitch, sick regeneration, and potential for a lot of bitey attacks in one round. (Though Scythean can potentially match # of raw swings thanks to his special ability) Ideally, you'll want both Typhon and the Scythean eventually. They're great models that lend great use to different situations. I'd say just weigh whichever fits more into your recent playstyle as of late!

Do you find yourself doing just fine for points, and/or wanting those 3x sprays? Grab the Typhon! Do you find yourself a bit short on points and often wishing you had just a couple more to afford that Shepherd/Forsaken/Deathstalker/Landshark, yet still wanting an extremely solid beatstick for your points? Grab the Scythean! Eventually you'll want to have both models, just grab the one that fits into your current lists best. :D
