View Full Version : NOT impressed with new plastics...

So, I got the Khador heavy warjack kit, for the Decimator.
I was quite disappointed, as the quality has dropped a ton. Whereas the old scultps had tons of detailing on the boiler, legs, and body, this has none. The boiler is just a plastic dome, there is no raised Khador symbol (most choked about that), and the legs don't have half the detail they used to. That, and I have a ton of extra bits lying around...
I do like the posability though, the plastics are MUCH more posable than the metals...

The lack of raised faction symbols kind of bugs me too.

I believe they were removed because not everybody wanted them on their models. Now you have the option of painting them on or not. There's even a tutorial of how to do this in the new NQ.

Being a scale model kit builder, I don't see why PP could not have included the raised bits as parts of the sprue. I don't think it would have increased the price significantly. I would love to have used the faction symbols as bits for terrain buildings like small forts, gates etc. The boiler handle isn't even that small and there are much more smaller bits in scale model kits.
Why couldn't they have just added a small sprue with a few thin faction symbols you could put on or something. Certainly there is a slight curvature issue but I doubt thin piece of plastic would be hard to set on and look reasonable. Plus it would have been a cool thing to have just to slap em on other things.

It's a Khador jack. If you do not want a Khador symbol on it then play another factions and let the other 99% of us have our raised symbol.

I agree, I was miffed that the raised anvil went away.
On top of that, the quality isn't all that great...

Besides, its PLASTIC! If you don't like the symbol, cut it off. It takes, what, 2 minutes?

every Khador kit at my LGS were also fairly warped when it came to the main chassis. I don't see how it could be intentional as it doesn't work with the rest of the figure

It's the return of the Khador gap perhaps? :p

Hot damn! The location in my user information is relevant and funny again!

I love pretty much everything about the new kits.
But I do miss the raised Khador symbol. The argument that not everyone wanted it doesnt hold water because the protectorate model has deeply set menofixes in the shoulders.

Maybe PP felt that Khador wouldn't bother to add that sort of doodaddery on regular 'jacks. I don't really mind for one.

I rather like the plastic jack.
Pros:
Went together very quickly. About a 1/3 of the time as the metal ones.
Alot more poseable and articulate.
All the different options in one box.
Cons:
No raised Khador symbol, but I can make one and attach it.
The jack seems to be larger than the metal ones, perhaps thats because the metal ones are hunched over more.
All in all, I call the new plastic jack a win!

For those of you that put together jacks,
Did anyone else have terrible problems with flash? or was I just the Unlucky one.

The mould lines are hideous. If I didnt own a dremel tool suited to just ripping them off the surface of the model via high speed light sanding, I'd have been annoyed. As it stands, I do, so I had no issue :P

Bad flash? Nah, just average for a plastic model. Have you ever put together a GW kit? Those still give me nightmares. By comparison, the Khador heavy was a walk in the park. All the parts fit beautifully, so much freedom in the posing.
I only wish I knew of somewhere where I could buy the bits. I would much rather buy 3 more sets of shoulders and magnetize at the chassis joint than attempt to do so in that ball and socket joint. Otherwise, first class.
P.S. Also, the juggy now has a most excellent pimping hand :)

Yes! Someone else agrees that the shoulder collet is a better choice for magnitization than the ball and socket of the shoulder joint.
There is much more of a parrallel surface to place your magnets there.
I cannot wait untill plastic parts are available in the online store.

Still waiting on mine to get here, but I for one welcome the departure of an icon I had to dremel off the metal models constantly :D

The "Khador Gap" returns!
Seriously, this kinda sucks...

I just started magnetizing my jacks today and I have to say that I am sure glad they added plastic to the line so I could try this. It's going to be a long process but even after just finishing a few arms I can tell that my modeling skills are improving and that it is going to be well worth the effort. Less detail or not I am glad it didn't have to buy 8 jacks just to have the option of fielding any two of the options that my 2 kits can make. If it were not for the addition of the plastic jacks I would never have really make the move to this game as I much prefer working with plastic over metal. I say kudos to PP for expanding their line and making the move that will keep this game affordable as the price of white metal goes up year after year.

Good God! That is bloody awful. I have one on order (should turn up in the next day or so) and if it looks like that I will be sending an email off to PP requesting a replacement.
I just had a look at the photos for the new jack kits in the gallery, NONE of them show that hideous gap in between the stacks. In fact, all of them are rather nicely detailed in that area.

I had lines right down the front of the thigh pads.
I'm not a fan of the plastic that was used. I used an Xacto knife and several different files and had a lot of trouble. The seams just didn't want to scrape off.
Also, there was a lot of pieces of the sprue that I had to remove. I'd rather have the sprues and clip them off by myself.
I also would have prefered that the ball and socket would have been solid. It would have made putting the magnets in easier.
The mould line on the thigh plate is the only one that really bothered me. It was tough to get a blade against that without threatening the rivet detail.

I only have the Protectorate one so far, but i am happy with it. I did not see any gap issues and it actually does have raised Menofixes.
There were some mold lines, but they were easy to get ride of. Now my Fennblades had some bad mold lines, nothing I couldn't deal with, but they took some kniving to get ready.

That thing with the boiler piping exists on the Cygnar plastics as well. Personally I don't worry about it; it's relatively small and hard to notice unless you're looking for it, and my attention's generally focused at the front of the 'jack anyways.

I think the new plastic jacks are great. They are easy to build and get on the table quickly.

I would prefer the two shoulder plates to meet at a sharp angle like the metal kits instead of a curve. But that could be fixed with a knife/file/dremel. Other than that, they're pretty nice and make me want to start filling out my small Khador force.

The only mold lines that are really giving me fits are on the feet. Right along the edge of the foot, and right in the middle... not fond of that at all. It's like someone was in a perverse contest to see how many raised details on the model they could make a mold line pass over, and the guy molding the foot just beat out the shoulder guy and the boiler guy.

I had a few mold lines down the middle of the leg plates. I didn't really notice until I primed the model. I just filed it down and gave it a quick re-prime. I am kind of bummed that they left off the faction symbol, but I did just free hand one where it should have been anyway.
There are a few good things about the plastics though:
I like to possibility.
As someone else mentioned, they seem to go together quicker then the metal counter parts.
They are soooo much easier to handle when painting. I assemble my kits first then paint, so there are plenty of times I have to hold a model on its side or even upside down when painting. The plastic kits being so much lighter makes this a lot easier.
