These are my first painted privateer models I've done for myself. As you can see I chose the bare necessities to start with, and hopefully I'll expand out from here. Anyways, here they are.

Definitely needs the tusks. But great work! I love the bases too.

I only take them off when he's going in for hugs. They tend to get in the way of my charges and I'd rather have a tusk-less titan facing the right direction than a tusked one charging its target butt first :)

Simply stunning. All the details look life-like; the teeth, tusks, nails, fabrics, faded metals, bases...EVERYTHING! They look almost like movie stills. Very good job and subtle. Care to share how you painted the patina?

They have a fantastic "Just marched across the wastes" look to them, dusty but detailed!
The tusks are magnetized or something? Slick idea. I wouldn't mind getting my butt handed to me by these guys, would be so nice to look at.
I love the dusty wasteland look!

Ok, the titan's tongue is pretty well done. Great attention to detail.

Iiiiinteresting! The drabness is just incredible. Every time I look, I see deeper details on the model. Great effort! The harsh conditions and slow decay is pretty effective!

Great muted colours! Love it!
Sad the OSL on the shield didn't come out that fancy.
Other than that lovely!

Those models look really awesome. The paint scheme is very interesting especially with that execution. I also like the glow effect on the brute's shield quite a lot. Looking forward to see more from you!

Awesome, they look like they've been through a sandstorm.
I don't know how you've done it but it looks like the blue stone things are shining through a load of dust, great stuff!

These are gorgeous. I have a friend who has a set of samurai armor on display in his house. It's green and red. I always thought that color scheme would be cool for Skorne as well. Although, I'm not how I would execute it if I ever got around to painting Skorne models. However, once I came here to see your Skorne, I saw that you did it perfectly! Again, well done!

Thanks everyone. I'm so glad to get a good response on these. I took them up to a tournament after painting them and didn't get a single ooh or ah ;) First off, in regards to the OSL, I agree it looks a little weak compared to the rest of the scheme. Unfortunately it was only my second attempt with that technique and the results were a little mediocre. Hopefully they will get a little smoother as the faction progresses. The bases do indeed have MIG powders on them. I started using MIG powders when I was painting a lot of flames of war, and I love them. Last but not least, here's my bronze recipe. Apologies for the weird mixture of paints. I've got sort of an eclectic mix I've built up over the years.
1) I prime the model black, then give it an overspray from the top down of white to simulate natural light.
2) I started by painting my actual bronze color on to all the armored areas. The mixture is mostly GW Brazen Brass with a small amount of GW Charadon Granite mixed in to darken it a bit. I paint an extremely watered down coat over the broad areas of the plates which covers them in only a sheen of color. This is mainly to get the metallic flakes spread around. I then paint the edges/filigree of each model with a regular coat of the same color.
3) Next I go over the bronze color with the green patina color. I use a very watered down mixture of Vallejo Gunship Green + a touch of Vallejo German Camo Bright Green. I get pretty sloppy with this coat, but I tend to let the raised edges of the armor (ie the bronze color) to show through the most. Sometimes I go back over this coat with a little more watered down paint from step 2 if I want an area to look more bronze and less patina.
4) Then I do my shade color, which is a mix of the paint from step 3 plus some added GW Shadow grey. This gets painted on to the armor in any area that would naturally fall in shadow.
That's about it. Thanks again everyone.

NEVER! would have guessed that combination. Thanks for the recipe. And, I'mm shocked you didn't get a single "a" or "ooh". There's no accounting for taste.

OSL aside (a pain of a technique top get right, as you've stated), great work here. Your pic of the titan without tusks really screams for a huge dogbone between his teeth to justify the puffy cheeks... :)

Thanks :) I'll have to post some more pictures soon. My hatred of photography has caused me to continue painting lots of stuff without ever posting it. I'll see if I can snap some pictures and show you guys how this army has progressed. I've gotten a better handle on that blue OSL, I think. It's still no masterwork, but much better than on the poor Brute.

I think the only way this could get any better would to add a bit of gloss to the beast's mouths and tongue. Give it a bit of a saliva look to it. But just a hint to keep that dry look to the over all models. The colors and details are just exquisite!

I think the problem you're having with OSL is gauging the proper intensity for your light source. On the Brute, you need to bring increase the intensity through additional highlighting as your light source is far too weak to produce that amount of light. Additionally, hit the interior of the shield with deeper shading and less of the glow effect as the filigree would block a fair amount of that incoming light from reaching those parts of the model.
The Krea has the opposite problem where you've created a rather strong light source and very little glow spilling out from it. Right now those back lights read more like very light blue beads than anything luminescent. Don't be afraid to add more blue to the surrounding area as long as it follows these simple rules:
-The farther from the light source something is, the less light it will reflect (meaning that nothing should be as bright as the source of light and that edges farther away should catch less)
-Light travels in a straight line so be aware of objects that stop its path (such as the filigree on the Brute's shield)
-Light travels in all directions (for example, your Krea's light-bathed areas are unbalanced unnaturally)
I'm sure these are things you know academically or else you wouldn't try it at all, but sometimes we need to be reminded of the basics while stretching our limits. With the exception of the OSL flaws, these are all quite lovely models. I especially enjoy the Krea's skin has a great hue to it. Kudos.

Part of it is that I'm afraid of overdoing it and wrecking the areas I've already painted with the OSL :P I'll keep practicing though. By the time I'm finished with the army maybe it will look passable haha.

After years of stalling I finally made a light box so my photo quality MIGHT be a little better. I photographed all my painted Skorne, which has grown substantially from when I did these last pictures, but, like a with holding wife, I'm going to eek it out one model a week, because that way it seems like I'm doing stuff when I'm not! Go me! So, here's my agonizer, complete with "Why god why!?" conversion work.

That is a top quality battlegroup. The colour scheme is just beautiful, and the bases add a lot of flavour.
The armour and the cloths are quite subtle but still very rich in shades & tones. Well made!
My only concert would be the gem on the shield of the Cyclops is a bit too much, I prefer the ones on the back of the Krea.
By the way the skin on her is brilliant. :)
Mr.chair
05-21-2013, 07:54 AM
Yeah, the Cyclops was the test for the glowing gems, and it failed pretty hard. My technique has improved quite a bit. At the time I was trying to do a Gem effect AND a glow effect and I just botched it. So now everything is straight glow, like on the back of the basilisk. I still struggle with the OSL so it has varrying degrees of success on every model.

As we keep telling you, your stuff is over-the-top good. You should really post Molik on here. It was pretty cool seeing how much stuff you had painted up at the tourney.
