View Full Version : Retribution in the Key of White (Lots of pictures)

Normally my painting style is very dirty with lots of washes and always operating from a black colour scheme. For the Retribution I wanted a nice clean scheme and would be starting from white. I've gone with a scheme pretty close to the studio one and it's slowly evolving as I go along.
First up finished pics

Vyros. His cloak was done very simply via inks over white and then working up. He's won his first game and very tempted to do him as one of my tier casters especially given how much I like the Sentinels and Invictors.

Kaelyssa. First Retribution figure I finished. Beaten just on her first game, but picked up a second Chimera and looking forward to getting back out with her.

Narn - loving him especially with acrobatics. The Mage Hunters are being done up in a similar style and using the tattoos throughout the army.
More on painted stuff over the week, but converted both my Heavy Myrmidions.

The Phoenix inspired by a conversion on the old forums.

Magnetised Hydra and Manticore.
More to come and hopefully some battle shots.

Nicely done. Hope to see more conversions!

They - painted ones - are rather inaccurate, especialy the whites. Maybe you should undercoat whites with grey first? Conversions are interesting.
Keravin
11-27-2009, 04:00 AM
Any white bits are from doing the layers rather than the undercoat as the models are gone over in a wash and underbelly blue before the white is started.
Conversions will come when I start getting more multiple units. Sentinels and Mage Hunters for definite.
Better shot of the tattoo on Narn

I've become a big fan already of the Sentinels and Invictors hence why Vyros is getting played a bit at the moment.

Slowly figuring how to do the blue on the armour and accurate washes seem to work better for building up the colour in the recesses.

The Invictors who are my stand out unit so far for the Faction. Really wish tiers allowed more of them than Mage Hunters.

Started work on their UA
I'm currently finishing the Mage Hunters, Nayl, magister, a Soulless, Mage Hunters UA, Garryth, 2 Arcanists, Ghost Sniper and the magnetised Heavy.

What is your average paint time for units/solos/jacks?
Keravin
11-27-2009, 02:51 PM
Absolutely no idea. I tend to paint 3 armies at the same time - up to 100 figures a month at times. So figures get started and worked on over a long period.
Currently I'm painting Space Wolves alongside the Retribution.

Nice army you've got going here Keravin. I look forward to pitching my Vyros list aginst yours some day soon, I just got hold of some Heavies, but I don't have any solos/UAs yet, so I guess I should order some after christmas :)
Any news on a Leeds gaming night?
Look forward to seeing those heavies painted :)

Lofty - working on it after the new year. Asking around at the moment to try and see if anyone knows of suitable venues already. Have you seen the tournament over in York in February?
Before new painted stuff I've just started priming new reinforcements. So...
http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l167/keravin/Retribution/DSCF6195.jpg
Stormfall archers for Vyros
http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l167/keravin/Retribution/DSCF6191.jpg
Riflemen for Rahn

Halberdiers for Rahn too. Figured some people might like to see the new figures for the month.

Got to finish the white on his manticore arms and then start on the Phoenix.
http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l167/keravin/Retribution/DSCF6172.jpg
WIP on the mage hunter unit which I'm going to try and finish this weekend.
And finished off one of my two arcanists
http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l167/keravin/Retribution/DSCF6180.jpg
I want to clear a lot of stuff that is almost done from the work area so I can make a crack on with the new stuff, but a lot of this is for a mass painting over christmas.

Metal - very nice figures and look to go together really well. I bought them blind so glad they are as nice as they are.
Driller - thanks. Yeah that's one of the things I'm learning from taking the photos. They look ok to the naked eye, but the photos are showing up more obvious issues.

Where can I find out more about this tournament in York? Not sure I will be up to it seeing how I've never played a game in my life, but I'm well up for going!

The new stuff was primed and using a grey primer to see if it works better.
http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l167/keravin/Retribution/DSCF6229.jpg
Since then these have had underbelly blue coat on the armour.
Finished Nayl
http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l167/keravin/Retribution/DSCF6222.jpg
And now figuring ways to put him in lists.
http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l167/keravin/Retribution/DSCF6225.jpg

Focus for next few weeks is finish off Garryth, Lanyssa and the Magister, then work on the Stormfall, the Riflemen, MHA and the Scyir.

Lanyssa is done. Pretty happy with her, even though the cloak took a little bit to get right.
http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l167/keravin/Retribution/DSCF6231.jpg
Magister is done.
Due to just having various things sat around waiting to be worked on I tried my last Myrmidion to paint on a different base.
http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l167/keravin/Retribution/DSCF6238.jpg
I do like it. Gives it a nice dynamic feel, uses a base I really like and adds to the model.

And finally

Got a day of gaming planned for next week so it'll probably be Retribution and Trolls to be played as my friend will be using Khador.
Working on the new Myrmidion
http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l167/keravin/Retribution/DSCF6249.jpg
Metals done. Since this shot the first load of white and glow has gone on.
http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l167/keravin/Retribution/DSCF6250.jpg
Base for the model. Probably do a bit more work on the sandbags.
But actually finished things as well

Mage Hunter Assassin is done as well. She's not been played yet and my opponent is already scared of her. Really happy with her.

Now this explains the lack of MW2!
Nice stuff, coming on a decent pace! Mine Retri are still mostly in boxes.....

MW2 is being subverted by Dragon Age :)
The white is taking a lot longer than even I thought, but it's getting there. Slowly getting some games with them as well which is helping push me to paint.

You should try putting the whit down using lots of thin layers, it would improve the finale look of you models.

The white has been put down in lots of thin layers.
Ravnak
01-12-2010, 01:19 AM
My reccomendation would be to add a very small quantity of grey to your white, just a little bit, to offcolour it.
Get a solid coat with the near-white, and then do a hilight of white over the top. It gives a much cleaner crisper looking finish.
Keravin
01-15-2010, 01:37 AM
Might try the grey. I had been trying that with working up from underbelly blue, but in going for the white I may have oversaturated.

Rahn is the current wip.

you should start with white primer, it appears like you started with black and it shows through your white. paint needs lots of work. i admit i dont paint white models well, its a difficult scheme. if i played scryah i'd have a different scheme.
Keravin
02-08-2010, 12:15 AM
No I started with grey primer on these as white just meant that metallics weren't working as well. The stormfall shot up the page shows the primed state.

02-08-2010, 01:00 AM
Thanks. There's a definite progression - most visible on the Invictor UA compared to the Invictors. That and it's taken 3 months on and off so far to do the Phoenix compared to the Hydra/Manticore because of layers being done. And it's still not finished yet.
Keravin
02-12-2010, 10:12 AM
Well start off with a very bad shot of the Scryir

http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l167/keravin/Retribution/DSCF6466.jpg
Looks awful in this pic, but it doesn't look that bad irl. Oh well.
Next being painted is Ravyn

Getting primed tomorrow are the Riflemen UA
http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l167/keravin/Retribution/DSCF6463.jpg
Absolutely love the officer. Really really nice figure and he's bumped the Riflemen to the front of the paint queue so priming these two and then doing the whole unit together.

That's all the warcasters now done for my Retribution. Finishing the 12 Riflemen now and I want to have the Phoenix Myrmidion done in the next month. The swap out arms for the manticore are now done so it's Halberdiers and Battle Mages next.

I definately see improvement as the thread progresses. Kudo's on that!
Couple things you might want to consider trying out.
First for the whites, I play menoth and I know how much of a pain white can be.
Tips for white:
-Use white primer for models that will primarily be white/offwhite, it helps ocver the model in less coats and prevents the paint from looking 'blotchy/uneven' I used to use grey primer and it always looked uneven to me. The switch to white primer fixed that fast.
-Thin your paints a bit more and layer it on in thin coats, this again will give your paints a smoother apearance.
-Start with an offwhite color and layer up to the pure white, then go back with a thin glaze of your original color (the offwhite you chose)
use a mix roughly 4:1:1 Glaze medium: paint :water *BE SURE YOUR PAINTS ARE %100 DRY FIRST, or your end up having to start over.
-Highlight your metals a little bit to give them some added depth, decide where your 'imaginary' light is coming from and lay on a quick touch of quicksilver or mithril silver along edges that are hit by your lightsource will achieve this pretty easily.
-Most important keep at it!!!
your doing pretty good and it looks like your improving with each model! at the rate your going you'll be wowing the forum in no time :)
Keravin
03-06-2010, 03:32 AM
Skydragon - thanks. I may try the white primer again, particularly now I'm getting more used to the thin layering. Based on the photos as well I do definitely need to figure a better backdrop as they do seem to be looking murkier than they are. Particularly Ravyn.
I'm finishing a min unit of Riflemen plus UA at the moment.

This is a shot a few weeks back.

Work got in the way for a bit in terms of painting.
The first batch of Riflemen are now done
http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l167/keravin/Retribution/DSCF6601.jpg
Just got 4 more to paint.
I'm currently working on the Fane Knight, finishing the Battle Mages and doing the alternate Mage Hunter.
I have however got some shots of the army altogether. Still working on how best to set up these sort of shots and my board was getting in the way of detail shots.
http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l167/keravin/Retribution/DSCF6838.jpg
That's everything that's done at the moment minus the Scyrir (due to a slight arm issue).
I'm hoping to have all the stuff in progress done by next week and then working on the Halberdiers.

Fane Knight is in progress
http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l167/keravin/Retribution/DSCF6851.jpg
But as he's predominantly white he's going to take a while. I do plan on veering away from the all white scheme, particularly when I do another heavy and probably if I do the other Chimera. That much white will drive me mad.
http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l167/keravin/Retribution/DSCF6874.jpg
The Mage Hunter variant is also done. 2 of the beauties to run around and scare the enemy.
And

The Battle Mages are done. Not sure if I'm happy with them, but glad to be done for the moment.

Update time
The Fane knight continues to be in progress and has broken me on doing an all white armour force. He will get finished soon, but having issues getting him to a stage I'm even reasonably content with.
I've got a slightly converted Magister painted pretty quickly this week. Not painted a lot, but he's been a doddle compared to the Fane Knight.

http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l167/keravin/Retribution/DSCF7494.jpg
This is a very wip shot and he's a lot further on now. I expect he'll be done this weekend.
There's another unit of Battle Mages to go with him and a new Phoenix. The Phoenix will be the first jack done in white and another colour. Going to build him first before figuring a scheme, but suggestions are welcome.
