Here's my War Wagon. I decided to try and make it rusty. I think I messed it up. It just looks red. Any thoughts?

I wouldn't say its too rusty just that the rusty parts look a little think and/or chunky.

Not sure how to make that better but that's my input :P

Nice! It is a bit rusty red for my taste, but it looks WAY better than the grey and pewter (unpainted) one I see played at my flgs! I think a quick brown wash over some of the recesses and a bit of metallic dry brush/highlights and you'd be totally back in business.

I think the build up in the recesses look fine. You'll only want to take some bright silver to the edges of some areas. Particularly the lip of the wagon. It has to have hit a sword or jack recently and scratched down to the bare metal again.

A little too red, but I like the "salvage" look on just about any Troll "tech"

It looks pretty good and is definitely salvageable. I think if you bring down the rust in the mid and lower "belt" areas on the wagon that it'll look much better. Just have the rust areas clinging to the rivets and the raised ridge areas.

The cannon is beautiful and just right. Make the rest of the wagon match the cannon and it'll be great!

I like it. You should only change it if you're not satisfied, in my opinion.

I did look just like the cannon to begin with. Then I thought it looked too clean. I'm gonna go back. I haven't sealed it yet, so I can go back and mess with it with some more alcohol and move it around. I'm gonna go for it now that those scattergunners are done.

I've gone back to it with the alcohol to swish the powder around. I'm happy with it now even though it doesn't look too much different. I'm going to seal it and rewash it and paint some more metal on it.

I like the rust but it is too heavy. When something is that rusted on the bottom, it won't be spotless on the top half either. Also, when metal gets that oxidized it has more than one color of rust. There are dark browns as well -sometimes even dull green tints. Do some internet image searches for rust and you'll start to see some interesting things on heavily rusted metals.

It doesn't look rusty. It looks like it's covered in road dust.

Rust needs to be a bit less red, be patchier, and have some texture. It also helps to contrast it. For example, on the wheels, where they rub against the ground the metal would abraid, rubbing the rust off. The same for points of wear.

I agree with this, also rust is not just red, it has brown, orange, purple, blue, and black, not to mention other colors as well. Take a moment and google "rusty shipwreck" then check out all the images, you will see a TON of awesome examples of how rust looks in real life. I think you have got a great start, but if you keep working it you will really be able to make it pop.

I would agree with you, it does look a little red.

Kommander Redfinger hit the nail on the head.

I would go with some very light washes of colours like hawk turquoise and start to build up some depth to the reddish colour - that shouldnt take too long buddy - build up some gentle washes and jobs a good un :)

I'd add some deeper, almost chocolate browns, and some yellow umber in places. Those are the colors in the Valejjo Dry Pigments Rust set.

I find purple, of all colors, really helps to deepen rust. Maybe some very, very controlled washes of Leviathan Purple inside select places of the rust would help. I did that on my War Wagon and I found it added a little "ooomph" that was missing.

Looking fantastic, by the way!

I wash all my armor with a mix of armor wash and leviathan purple. I find that a non-metallic color like purple or blue really helps give the metal that look of having a realistic reflection of light.

PM SchnauzerFace. He is VERY, VERY, VERY good and can give a lot of good guidance plus he is a great guy to deal with. Try him. Pick his brain.
Also he isw working on a troll war wagon now.

Damn! This is all great advice! I googled rusty shipwreck. I knew that something was missing. It's more colors! Brown and stuff! I'm going to seal in that redness and then start with some browns. I've also gotta get some leviathan purple. I'll do more work this week on it.

Ok! I did some more work today. I wanted the buffalos to look different than the wagon body. I wanted the wagon body to look old and kinda busted. I wanted to look a bit different than the guns too. So, here's my finished product. It looks much different than the original version. The red is much more muted now. I sealed it and washed it with Ogryn Flesh and then Devlan Mud. I like how it looks now. I hope you guys do too!

Sounds like you were using the vallejo pigments for this. I ahve some and I have some tips, if you like. I use water/alcohol to make a wash out of the pigment. Then I apply that to cracks and I completely cover metal surfaces. You let that dry and then you can take a dry brush and dust off areas where you feel it is too much. This gives you a nice dust coating still over those areas but allows the under layers to show through in a natural way. I tend to do the red pigment first like it looks as though you did too. Here is the kicker though... after you have dusted areas off. you can go back and mix up various other pigment colors. you fill your brush, but not too much... Then you lighly tough the tip to the dry pigments on the model already. This draws the pigment from the brush, and the new color absorbs into the old one. It's like magic how it blends together. It gives you all the variations you want in the colors. You do this with adding various pigments getting different looks. This accomplishes a nice rust look, that is still believable that it's in service. Also letting some nice metalic areas show through is nice too, showing where things have chipped or been recently damaged.

Here is a pic of my results.

I think you have made some great progress, it is looking much better than your first post. That being said I think you could do a few more things to help it out a bit more. Right now there is a distinct difference between the rust on the carriage and the rust on the gun, I think to make it look a little more balanced the gun needs some more weathering. Also, go back to those pictures I has directed you to earlier, if you start adding some darker rust into the some of the recesses it will off set some of the red. In addition, some highlighting on the upper surfaces would not be amiss.

@fishfleas: I did mess with the pigment alot after I laid it down. I kept moving it and removing it.

@kommander_redfinger: I left the gun cleaner on purpose. My reasoning: They would do more maintenance to the gun to keep it working well. I may go back and do more highlighting. I'm going to let it sit for a couple of days and then look at it again. That's usually how I do it. I don't need it for 2 weeks in my Journeyman League :)
