    Default Retribution of Mordjinn

After spending over an year in a drawer my retribution models were finally ready for assembly and painting. I'm a father of a 1,5 year old hurricane and therefore my hobby time is very limited. But 15-30mins per evening gets you forward relatively fast. At least I'm quite proud of my progress. Instead of doing the studio scheme I wanted my force to have more of a guerilla look. The scheme is heavily inspired by Billingsly's amazing scheme, thanks mate! I'm painting the whole army on one big go as it seems to be the way to do this particular project and this time I'm trying to paint good tabletop quality rather than showpieces. I tend to get way too hooked up on detailing and forget the big picture. This time it will be different!

    Sentinels + UA.
The bases are not done yet, but otherwise this unit was very fun to paint and I'm very happy with the result.

    Mage Hunter test model.
I was thinking of doing the whole force with the greenbrownish color, but in the end decided to give MHSF a bit of different flair with the grey cloak. The other models of the unit and the commander are halfway ready too.

    Phoenix & Griffon
I actually had both of the models ready and assembled before starting this project. Poor Griffon was used for many color scheme tests and I had to strip the paint off from her completely and did some minor re-posing too. Phoenix was also assembled, but had a really akward "studio standard" pose. I also wanted her to have more aggressive and went through a relatively painful process of making her sword two handed.

And here are some solos and Manticore I just undercoated tonight with an airbrush. I absolutely hate the Manticore/Hydra - duck heads so I built a custom head for the combo strike lady. The holes and cuts on her shoulderpads are for upcoming battle damage. The guerilla force shouldn't be too clean and straight from the factory looking, right!?

I will post more pictures as the project progresses. For once I've decided that I will not take this force to the table before it is fully painted. There's still a long way to go, but I'm pleased with the looks and the vibe of this posse so far. Oh, the warcaster will be Kaelyssa and I probably will add another caster once I first get this show on the road.

C&C very welcome, thanks for watching!

HAHA! These are fantastic! I'm glad you finally got the paint situation sorted out. Anyway great job. I really like the head on the manticore(I'm going to steal that for the Vyre Jacks) and the phoenix's shoulder detail . I look forward to seeing your army progress.

Cheers back mate. Your force is the reason why I finally got these babies on the painting table. Here are a couple of WIP pictures of Manticores head, to give you a better idea how I did it. I recommend drilling small holes for the antenna-horn-bunny ears as it will help them stay on much better.

A big huge thanks to all of you for your kind words. May your paint flow freely and may you all win your next five games!

You've clearly taken a lot of time on your poses for the excellent heavy myrmidon kits, Mordjinn! I haven't really seen battle-damaged Ret I've liked until now, and I think a lot of that has to do with the consistency and realistic tones in your paint scheme. Do you have any plans to take a crack at the new Vyre kit?

    The Phoenix is great!

Have you varnished your Sentential with gloss? Because I prefer the finish on the Phoenix and Griffon.

Thanks for your comments! I'm very happy that you like my stuff.

@Jazz29: The Vyre jacks are on the shopping list although they look quite stupid to me. But that was how I felt with the Shyeel Myrmidons when I first saw them. I think the Retribution studio scheme just doesn't photograph well. I'm already thinking how to convert the Vyre jacks to make them look cooler. But first I will finish the current force and play some games with them as I decided that I won't play with this army before it is all done.

@neathleanan: The sentinel picture is just a bad picture. I think that what you think of gloss finish is actually painted in battle damage. Also the Phoenix and Griffon are still WIP. I will dullcoat everything once I get enough models ready for that (don't want to run to the cellar just for one unit :P ). I'll take much better shots of everything once I get things done.

Just a quick picture after yesterday's "15mins" of painting. I was planning to do one colors worth of little details on the MHSF but ended up using a bit over a hour doing pretty much all the detailing on their gear. The most tedious part done I hope I have energy to finish the unit. After that painting the rest will be a breeze. I also hope my KR case will come soon as the WIP painting box is getting crowded. But it is also good to see all the models side by side to get a good idea how the overall look of the army is coming together.

Is there a guide out there on doing the logo for retribution on a shoulder pad like that?

I am interested in learning how to do that - getting bored of big open spaces on the shoulders.

It is really quite simple. Print out a Scyrah symbol of appropriate size (I printed out many different sizes and chose the best match). If you have sticker paper all the better. Glue the printed out symbol on 1mm plasticard and cut it out with a blade. The trickiest part is gluing the symbol on as the shoulderpads are so curvy, but as the thin bits are quite bendy it wasn't much of a problem.

I'm still unsure whether to go the extra mile with the Manticore shoulderpad too or just airbrushing the symbol on with a stencil. Decision, decisions...

Would you mind divulging how you got this effect on your models? ie. what colors/techniques you used? I'm tempted to copy this myself, method-wise (I'll probably use a lighter tone like tan, though). Thanks!

Sure thing mate. First I prime black. This is because I paint the successive layers of base colors only from the straight 90 degree angle or higher so the black is actually the color of shadows. Then a layer of Vallejo Model Air Dark Earth with an airbrush from the 90 degree angle and another layer of Vallejo Model Air Hemp with an airbrush. So exactly the same colors what Billingsly used on his Retribution. The Manticore is not washed yet, but the Phoenis and the Griffon have both received a Vallejo Sepia wash (which I chose after trying both that and Devlan Mud. The Vallejo Sepia wash has a yellower shade, which I preferred for this force). That's really it for the base colors. Please also check Billingsly's Retribution thread as he is the one who helped me out to achieve these results.

Just a quick update as I decided to go the extra mile and fix the house symbol on the shoulder of Manticore.

Painting big units with loads of details can be exhausting, but finally the MHSF is done! Now with both units ready so I can move on to single models which are much more rewarding to paint. I'll take better pictures when the whole army is ready and painted, but here's a quick shot of the progress.

I really love the embossed logo on your jacks! Makes me wanna emboss logos on EVERYTHING! Too bad I play legion and it would look weird if I did that on my beasts...

Awesome man. Painting units is pretty awful; I had to take a month long hiatus after my last 10 strong unit was finished. That said, once they're done, it's nice to be able to deploy a unit on the gaming table and not feel ashamed.

Finally had time and inspiration to paint a bit more. Did the battle damage to the myrmidons. I hacked and sliced and drilled the damage to the models during assembly and used blister foam for the pathcy effect. Then painted some of the dark patches with metal paint. They came out quite battered, but that's exactly what I wanted.

Been painting like a maniac the last couple of days. All the infantry and solos are now ready for dullcoating and only heavy myrmidon bases are still WIP. I'll post more, better and nicer pictures later on but here's a victory shot for finishing up this group.

Absolutely loving the paint jobs on these! Battle-damaged Retribution look so much better than the clean colour schemes IMHO

Also, when you get a chance, could we get a close up of Kaelyssa? I've been looking at picking her up just to paint (don't own a Ret army!) and I'm curious to better see your take on her with your colour scheme

great stuff... it all fits so nicely: colour scheme, poses, battered look.

Cheers guys and thank you so much for your comments. It seems that all those lonely "15mins" of painting paid off and I'm flattered that you think the sceme and paint job works. Thanks. I'm pleased with the result myself as these miniatures sat on the shelf for months waiting to be painted. I just finished the bases for the heavy myrmidons and all the painting is now DONE! Yay! After I seal the whole army I still add some more grime, rust and mud with pigments and after I those finishing touches I promise to loan a better camera and take better shots of everything.

Until then Phoenix and Manticore wanted to say hi.

I really like these. Your scheme really brings out an "in the field" feel, and the battle damage is very well done. A good job of making the details visible on the troops while keeping a fairly monochrome scheme, as well.

    Keep up the good work.

Finally done! Very happy with the result and looking forward of playing with this army. Went an extra mile with the bases of more impotant models. Here's a quick and dirty bad lightning photos right off the painting table. I'll loan a better camera and take better pictures of everything when I have time. And a closeup on Kaelyssa for Warcaster Feiss.

Awesome dude. Those jacks just keep getting better. The basing is really nice as well, any ideas about marking the rear arcs?

Now this is a some good painting! And the look makes sense to Ret as they live in a wooded area and want to stay hidden. I never understood how they thought they could hide giant white jacks in the woods? But these are awesome please keep it up

Whoa mates! Thank you so much for your kind words. The past two days I had the worst scare of my life with my baby daughter. Now all is good again and coming here and seeing your comments really means a lot.

@Washburn: I'm torn between airbrushing the arc markers with grey like I did with my Legion (check my sig for the thread) or just painting a thin dark grey line with the brush. Something very subtle as they shouldn't steal the attention from the models. Probably will go with the airbrushed ones as they're fast and easy to do well.

This is pretty much exactly what I wanted my Retribution to look like. Those are excellent jacks.
