Good effort with this thread. I wish I had the same methodological approach when preparing models for painting.

Thx! I've never painted a model in pieces before. It actually took a considerable amount of effort to not put the whole model together and prime it (and field it in a game). I've always painted my models fully assembled. I just figure that the parts that would be hard to paint, no one would really see, and would most likely be obscured in shadow any way.

But, the War Wagon is simply too EPIC!!!... and there are parts that would be darn near impossible to paint well with it together... and it forces me to paint it; because as much as I want to play it in a game, I'd really rather play with a painted one.

Musings on modeling the War Wagon...

    1. Check out the PP tutorial before assembling. It's helpful!
    2. It's a lot of model. There are five Trollbloods on it! It took me quite a while to finish. Even though the War Wagon is mostly metal, there is just a lot of it to paint.
    3. Doing it in pieces was a must. There were parts of it I just wouldn't have been able to get to otherwise. I primed, fully painted, and sealed it in pieces.
    4. I modeled the tails of the bison flicking up (because I thought it looked cool) and I had to snip one off entirely because it was preventing the bison from fitting under the carriage. Derp...
    5. Let your glue really cure before you handle it too much, and I pinned a lot of it together.
    6. Glue the pygs to the carriage before you glue the gun platform. That part of the model is really tight in terms of space.
    7. Painting a vehicle was fun. I wouldn't do it twice.
    8. Photographing a mini is it's own separate skill set. It took 67 pics of just the finished War Wagon alone to get to the pics you see here. Ugh.
    9. Field it with Grim so you can blow the #$%& out of your opponents! =)

I agree on all points, and did the same with mine...except i put the gun on before the pygs and cried a little inside...but it still is managable.

How do you do your red skin tone on the trolls, what do you use?

    1. Base coat of Scorched Brown...
    2. Then paint raised areas with Dark Flesh, leaving Scorched Brown in the recesses...
    3. Then highlight with Tallarn Flesh or Dwarf Flesh (when I had it).
    4. Then paint over the highlights with a very thinned down Dark Flesh (paint, water and glaze medium) to subdue the Tallarn Flesh, taking care to not get to much into the Scorched Brown recesses. The more I get it on the Scorched Brown the redder the general skin tone gets.

Of course all the Citadel paints are changing now so I gotta find equivalents... yikes!
