I am working with the great people at the scrum: http://www.trollbloodscrum.com/ to get a more in depth tutorial up for everyone so you can easily reproduce the ice bases! I will post a link to it as soon as they host it for us.
some work on Gorten, adding some ice build up on his armor

Gorten's Wall

very cool rhulics... more phenomenal ideas to spread..
the ice is working out pretty well from what i see. One thing that jumps out at me on that gorgeous gorten model is the icicles, to me they look more melted and reminiscent of a cold water flow. Seems as if you worked the water effects too much or not enough depending on your application technique. if you were to bulk up the three main icicles you may like it better - although it still looks great and i will be spreading your inspirational works thru interpretation to the local areas.
The ice wall is pretty awesome, cant forget the ice wall
great bases and great battle group... i especially like the idea of the ice wall, it's much more agressive than just plain walls
Chaos isn't a pit. Chaos is a ladder. Many who try to climb it fail and never get to try again. The fall breaks them.
And some are given a chance to climb, they cling to the realm or the gods or love. Only the ladder is real. The climb is all there is.

Absolutely gorgeous stuff. Keep up the amazing work, can't wait to see more.
Holy crap dude this is phenomenal! I'm not going to lie I'm definitely stealing this idea for my legion.
wow so everything about this is just amazing. I have a lot of issues painting white myself and i was curious if you would be willing to tell us how you did such an exceptional job so we can idolize you and steal your ideas. absolutelty stunning though keep it up.

in case you are still looking for more gears - check out dragonforge - Jeff (who also sculpts for PP on occasion - he did the first 2 collossals for example!) has cast some nice ones in resin, they paint up easily and he is US based
Thanks for all the support! I hope to have a few more pictures of my continued work on Gorten up soon along with some more Lava troll shots.
As for the white what I found works for me is lots of thin watered down layers. I for the love of me cannot get "two brush blending" to work to any reasonable quality (though I keep trying). I usually use a big brush, think citadel medium (not sure what number that correlates to), and lick half of it after its been in the paint. I start with the wet side and then flip it over to the licked side as I paint "away" from the part that is to be very white. This seems to work well for me and also for blending other colors. Its not the "correct" technique, but it seems much easier for me to do and I like how my models are turning out. That said, I am going to keep trying the two brush blending to try to get it down.
worked on your suggestions and started building up the icicles as well as some ice build up on Gorten's armor

sweet freakin' baby jesus this whole thread just wreaks of awesomeness. I love it zreef! I'm definitely going to keep my eye on this thread. I love the bases and the paint jobs!

I love this look. I want to try your basing technique for my Khador winter guard. While it's a more steep initial investment, making 15+ bases for my death star would be cheaper (and more awesome) than buying any comprable commercial equivalent.
But I've got a question: how robust are the bases with all the fiddly ice bits? I can afford to lavish more care on my 'caster, but I'm not going to be as delicate with my grunt infantry.
@DrQ ... you should totally do it! So it depends on how many jagged ice pieces you want sticking out. For instance, Gorten's base is super solid. You will break it/him if you drop him from 3 feet in the air, but dings, bangs, etc not a big deal. Even the ice shards on the ice wall are solid, the thinner you make them the easier they break, but they will NOT break from a small bump. You can snap them with your fingers (just to give you an idea), but it takes a little bit of effort. I would not worry about the bases at all, I am not worried about mine. (I plan on making some dwarven infantry post move)
Wow, I was just wondering how to base my Vayl1 and Sorscha1 and you come along with bases that look like actual ice glued on bases. You sir, are awesome!

It does not matter if you win by an inch or a mile. But the former is usually more fun.
Great! please post how the bases turn out for you! Just as an example here is a mini (non warmachine -- please let me know if its ok to post these if not I will happily remove them) that has plasticard to avoid the pedestal base (also its painted teal instead of black). This is how it looks "flat".

mind if i ask a quick question,
I am looking to try and play around with this tutorial, which of the Distress paint did you use the picket fence or the clear?
thanks in advance,
ogre
@wulfenstein thank you for all the support!
@ogres_lair
I used the clear, I think the link still works, but I can update it if its busted.
Also post how it turns out for you!
It looks great! If you want to have less of the smaller cracks from the crackle paint, just quite literally pour that stuff into the base. The thicker the layer the larger the cracks, the thinner the layer the smaller the cracks. Its personal preference really, I like them both ways and I have been using small cracks for my 40k army as well. Feel free to post any suggestions / clarifications for others attempting the ice bases!
As for lava ... well if you are interested search for lava trolls, toward the end there is The_Ravenous' take on lava which looks awesome!
The ice bases are great. I shall be stealing that idea for my Legion...![]()

That ice wall looks totally stunning. Ingenious!
Awesome! Please post your results and insights so we can all benefit from them![]()
I cant wait to get back to painting, having all my paint stuff sitting in storage is painful
Thank you Zreef for posting this tutorial! It was easy to follow and you gave very clear instructionsI was so excited to try this with my Legion, and here are a few of my results.
(Please ignore the drill holes >.<)
I wanted to try with rocks of a few different sizes since the image in my mind of Carnivean running across the battle field on ice means he also falls on his face, and to offer more of a mountain top feel.
Here are some things I found when working with the tutorial/rocks:
1) When adding crackle on the rocks, mixing in some Water Effects helps to "glue" it to the rocks.
2) Making the arc with the Water Effects Jel using a toothpick as well as a paintbrush helps get more peaky flicks and to define the middle arc since I made mine a little thicker.
3) I went a little glitter crazy on a few as an experiment (and they are sparkly like a vampire needing to be staked in the sun sparkly), but I found that for the 30mm base using the tip of your pinky finger dabbed into the glitter gave a reasonable amount of glitter to base ratio. Ring finger for 40mm and middle finger for 50mm.
And that's all I can think of for the moment. Please offer comments/criticisms and thanks again Zreef, lava bases next!
Those are awesome looking! I might borrow your ideas for adding rocks to the bases on some of Rhulics.
How did you like the fast glitter? I find that pictures done really capture the effect too well, but it adds to the ice effect as it catches the light much like ice would (but not crackle paint unfortunately).
What is the best way to attach models to these bases? I find the super glue I use tends to create a white residue when applied to clear plastic. Is there a special glue to use?
I have been using super glue, the white residue is not very visible since my ice is dry brushed white. I just use the GW thick super glue. Hopefully the others that have made their own versions can chime in on their attaching method.

Thanks! Please show off your rock results Zreef
As for attaching the models to the base, I pin the models to the rocks/ice and super glue them. I start with the smallest size bit and work up the required size so the ice pieces won't shatter everywhere. And if they do, I use a toothpick in the hole and re-crackle the area.
Thanks, will defiantly posts my results when I'm done. Just got two 4oz bottles of the rock candy crackle paint in. Only thing I'm missing is the water effects gell to create the icicles, but that can always be something I add later when I buy that.
To address white residue see if you can pick up a foam safe type.. they are not supposed to cloud or produce that "white residue", which is helpful for clear and near clear bits - the added bonus is that they are not supposed to erode/melt foam (ie foam safe)
but with snow/ice effects, like zreef said - the clouding/whiting should be concealable.
