    Default A Shack

I am currently building a shack specifically for Warmachine. I want it to represent a sleeping quarters for some troops or workers that has been hastily erected and then more or less left to slowly fall to pieces. It won't be a ruin or anything but it certainly isn't five star accomodation! It is mainly going to be wooden with a metal roof. Here is what I have so far:

Yeah, it definitely looks great! The only problem with a buiding like this is, that Jacks and Warbeast will be running right through it. But hey, why not make it a destroyable piece? Just make a second shack, which has already fallen to pieces. You could then simply replace the first shack after it has been destroyed. It then wouldn't be blocking line of sight anymore, but slow down everybody trying to get across instead.

I made a shack as well. Can you please post up a close up on your windows. They look better than mine and I want to see your technique.
    Thanks!

What material is that made out of? I'm interested in making a little shack village and nobody around here sells modelling wood.

Coffee stir sticks are really good for something like this.

Yep the wood is from coffee stirrers! I tend to grab a handful on the occasions I grab a take away coffee. It saves on buying balsa wood.

I really don't like the idea od interactive terrain. It can be cool but it is often just a hassle. So no destruction of my shack! It will be somewhat reinforced with metal struts by the time I am finished.

I have managed to make some decent progress on the shack. The roof is now on and so are the side supports. They aren't perfect yet but I have a few things still to do.

I added a few details to the roof to break up what is otherwise a rather flat surface. A trapdoor seemed appropriate to give access to the roof. Why the occupants might need this I am still unsure. Maybe to provide some extra strorage, who knows? Its purpose is to provide interesting something to look at.

I have some WIP painting shots on my blog here. I want the piece to be rusty but not too orange, a difficult task!

    For rusty metal.

Paint the item terracotta or a similar rust color. Stipple it with silver. Then put a brown wash over it.

Makes a really rusty and grimy metal. I use it for my cryx but it would probably work for this as it is run down.

You may also be able to use a salt technique. I have seen youtube videos of it but have never tried it.

How did you make your rivets?

I use the same tool for rivets as PP do in their hobby blog, a leather punch:

It takes some getting used to but it is really great. You have to practise with various thicknesses of plasticard to get the pressure correct. I am finding with the lighter grades that I rupture the rivet causing a cracking across the top. I used really thick stuff for this shack however 1.5mm and that can be really easily punched without any ill effects.

Firstly your shack looks great. The execution is very slick.

Don't want to hijack the praise you deserve but this is almost relevant so i thought I'd stick it here. Not sure it warrants a thread of it's own. Nail artists use these half round pearl gems. I think they would make great rivets and would work if we weren't using plasticard.

Sheet styrene, look for 'Evergreen' and 'Plastruct' in your shopping searches as those are the companies that sell all the various sizes for scratch building model rail road stuff. Another cheaper/easier source for large sheets is walmart/homedepot/lowes the plastic 'For Sale' type signs are a dollar or two and get you a pretty good sized sheet to work with.

So my experiment with Iron Kingdoms architecture is complete. The shack is painted up and ready to hit a board somewhere. I like the rusted roof. It came out quite red in the picture here. I used three rust filters over the top a technique from railcar painting. I didn't do it perfectly as I discussed here. However as an experiment this came out perfect. The intensity of the rust and its quality changes depending on the angle you look at it. Foe instance compare the sides to the top.

The plasticard I get is from a company called Graupner. They are german based. I can't pick up Evergreen here so thats the best I have found so far. I will look for Plastruct, maybe I can find someone who supplies that. I am also stuck for some foamcard so if any of the Germans reading this know where I can get some please let me know!

So having made the first in a series of buildings I have to think whats next?

Looks good so far. The door is a bit small for the massive side off the shed. I would think that it was 2 storys from the outside...
That is my only gripe however.

As for the next project: Jack maintenance shed.

I think of it as a solid back wall with a roof. The sides and front are open. Inside is a sort of metalworkshop and a large bench for a jack to sit/ly on and a cranelike construction for lifting heavy parts.

    Yeah, that would be cool...

How did you get the aged wood effect? I think the texture and tone you got really helped the end result

The wood is painted with Graveyard Earth (GW) and washed with brown and green. I then drybrush with some white to bring out the texture of the wood a little better. I made the roof deliberatley high due to what I wanted the building to represent. I see it as a sleeping bunk for soldiers or workers. So bunks would be the order of the day maybe two or three high. So to accomodate that I made the roof higher. I also raised the window level higher than normal. I got some inspiration from the sleeping bunks shown in the Great Escape or Cool Hand Luke.

The next project is a tower which will be previewed tomorrow on the blog. I will post it up here once further progress is made!

Looks great! I can never get my rivets to come out that good. I need more practice!
