    Default Stripping paint

hi all this has probally been posted but thought i would start a newer post about it . is there anyway to get old paint off the mini's without the glue coming off? i bought a unit of bane thralls and a stalker and they have paint on them that i would like to take off . i think it is suppose to b the primer but it looks like a gloss black that my local game store people said that i need to take off the paint cause they said the new paint wouldn't stay on it they said mean green would work or put them in paint thinner . pretty much i am trying to keep from breaking the gluue apart at the joints is there anyway i can do that?

Just about anything you put your minis in to strip paint, will also break down the glue... i, myself, use Simple green. It works wonders on paint. you could probably put the mini in that without doing much damage to the glue itself, but it will still damage the glue enough to cause it to break down...

Well if they are metal models MEK works pretty good, Acetone is another one but the MEK was alot faster than the Accetone.

I use a product called super clean, it's generally sold as an automotive degreaser. I put an entire mage hunter strike force in last night and pulled them out of the drink this morning. Of the bunch, only two had the crossbows came off (such a small bond there that a fair tug will break the super glue bond on any of them normally) so it's fair to say that I've had good success removing paint without breaking the glue bonds with it. I know that if you leave it in more than a couple days it'll start to loosen glue so it's not a perfect solution, but if you're conservative on how long you soak minis it could work. I'm pretty sure it's chemically similar to simple green which should yield similar results.

Then put a coat of primer on them which i got flat white which is what the local game store told me is the best to put on them cause u can see where all u missed when u put ur base coat on them . i will put the pics with a b4 i start to sstrip them then after i do it then when i paint them to see what everyone thinks of my first try at it

If you haven't already, I'd fish them out and take the plastic bases off to be sure you don't end up melting any of the plastic!

Also give them a real good wash off after you've stripped them, just so there is nothing nasty left behind before you prime.

After you strip them my favorite primers to use are PP primer or Duplicolor car primer.

I highly suggest checking out this tutorial on paint stripping, as well as this one on inserting pictures into posts.

When you're done with those, head on over to the Tutorial Finder, stickied at the top of the Modeling and Painting forum to see the huge collection of tutorials on everything related to modeling and painting.

I've started just using washes to cover the models after I strip them down. It is a thin coat for all the other colors I want to go onto the model that allows the details to still shine through. I also agree with Super Kleen. I don't know where Cookeville is, but if they have a Wal-mart, and who doesn't these days, they'll have in the automotive department. I think that breaking down the glue is a good thing as I believe any model I get that I didn't put together needs to be re-glued so the only person I can whine about when it comes apart is me.

Agreed here, man this forum has the most killer advice on how to get just 'bout any effect or model painted the way you want it that I can think of and they even have PP folks give a lesson or three.

half an hour to an hour in simple green.
Then of all the things, I use a water pik like you use to clean your teeth lol.
It blasts the paint right off the mini.
    Hope that helps !

I hope you don't mind me borrowing the thread while we are on the topic, but I see a lot of suggestions for metal, is there a good product to use to get paint off of plastic?

Purple Power or Super Cleen work best with plastics. I love that stuff.
