Default New England Team Tournament 2012 - July 14

    Hello everyone,

It's that time of year again - time for the New England Team Tournament. Because we only have space for 16 teams and the only way to make sure that registration is both fair and doesn't cost me my sanity is first-come-first-served, so I want to make sure everyone has some advance notice to get their teams together. You will need to pre-pay for the whole team at registration and list the team members. This doesn't prevent last-minute substitutions if someone can't make it or something, just prevents people "holding a spot" on speculation. Anyway, here are the details:

Players must register and pre-pay as full teams of three through the NEPRIVATEERS.COM site. Registration goes live Friday, May 4th at 8am.

    Date: Saturday, July 14th, 2012
Time: 10am check in, 11am dice roll

    Location:
Comfort Inn; 2 George Street; Pawtucket, RI 02860; 401-723-6700
take RT 95 to exit 27 in Pawtucket, RI and you can't miss it

    Cost:
    $60 per team - that's only $20 per person

    Hotel Room Deal:
for those staying overnight, we have a room block at the hotel - $89/night plus tax for two beds for the night, free wireless internet, free parking, and free hot breakfast. Call them at 401-723-6700 and use the group code "New England Team Tournament" before June 22 to get the rate.

    Format:
35pt Steamroller, 2 lists required, character restricted, divide and conquer, death clock

Players must register and play as complete teams of three players each. If you don't have three players when you show up to check in, you need to get replacements or you can't play. Each team will identify a captain, first lieutenant, and second lieutenant. Teams will be paired against one another with the captains of each team playing against one another, the first lieutenants squaring off, etc. Each player wins or loses his game on his own, with the result recorded on the team score sheet. The team that wins two or more of the three games each round wins the round while the other loses the round. Pairing is by teams in the Swiss format of Steamroller.
Once during the tournament, a team captain may use a team feat. At the start of each match up, before players deploy to tables against one another but after the teams have each had a chance to see what the other is playing, the captains of each team rolls a die. The captain who rolls lowest must decide and declare first if he is going to use the team feat that round. After he has decided, the captain who rolled higher decides. When a captain uses his team feat, he may assign the members of his team to play the members of the opposite team as he sees fit, regardless of rank. Obviously, the captain rolling higher can use his team feat to undo or alter the pairings made by a captain who used his first.

    Prizes:
The undefeated team at the end of the day will be awarded the New England Team Tournament trophy to take home and display in their local game store or club meeting place until the next Team Tournament when they must return it and try to defend it. We will also have prizes for the individual members of the first and second place teams as well as a painting prize drawn randomly from among the players who had all fully painted models in both armies. We may add additional door prizes as well. These will be posted on neprivateers.com as we lock them down.

Teams are encouraged to theme their team (all same faction, dress the same, all run a tier force, etc.) and we will have a prize for best team theme.

That's it for now. We look forward to seeing you at the game tables.

What was the reason for cutting it down to 35 points

Several of us in the NYC area were really looking forward to this until it was listed as 35pts.

It was set to 35 points mostly for time issues. At 35 points, round length is 100 minutes per SR2012. Let's average that to 90 minutes given the deathclock format. Four rounds is 6 hours. Add an hour of registration time at the beginning, an hour of setup time before that, an hour of takedown/awards time at the end, a lunch break, and a few minutes for a pee break between rounds and you're looking at a 10+ hour day for those of us running it. That gets hard to manage outside the structure of a convention and we didn't want to make it so that those coming from more than an hour or so away HAD to stay overnight or risk a dangerous drowsy drive home.

Thus, the decision was taken to go with 35 points rather than the longer 50 points. However, depending on feedback, we might consider future expansion to allow more than 16 teams by making it a 2-day event at the 50 point level. A lot depends on how this goes.

I will say though, that to date I've heard just as many people say they were relieved it's only 35 points as I've heard say that they're disappointed about that fact. I'm still hopeful that 15 points of models won't keep folks from joining us for a great tournament.

    WHAT IS UP, TEAM TOURNAMENT?

I am so coming to this. Technically I'll be defending my title from, like, 7 years ago, since I haven't been to any since then, so... watch out, fools!

And I like 35 points - it makes it easier for my Mercenaries, unlike the 50-point three-list format, which I couldn't even do. (Not that I could have done 35 points and two lists last year, since I didn't even have two warcasters, but whatever.)

Question - what is Divide and Conquer? I can't find the Steamroller rules for the life of me.

Will be good to see you at the event Tucker. Who else you thinking of for your team?

As for Divide and Conquer and the SR rules, the rules can be found here: http://privateerpress.com/files/SR2012_Rules_V1.3.pdf

From those, Divide and Conquer is defined as:
Divide and Conquer – The EO will announce the expected number of rounds to be played at the
beginning of the tournament. Divide the number of rounds to be played by the required number of lists for
each player. The result (rounded down) is the number of times each list must be played during the
tournament. Divide and Conquer events must use the X Lists Required variant.
Example: If a tournament requires that each player brings two army lists and has five rounds, then each
player would have to play each list at least twice (4 divided by 2). In this variant a player must inform his
opponent if he has no choice of which warcaster or warlock he must play prior to a game. If a player
receives a bye he must choose a list to use for the bye round.
In short, for the four rounds of the event, you must play each of your two lists twice.

I must admit, 35pts definitely throws a wrench into my plans for this, as does the move to RI... I remember all the talk last year of it moving to CT, and was hopeful for something under a 3hr drive.

I suppose I see your point about the time issue at 50pts. As I recall, last year we only went three rounds, and I think I rolled back into NYC around 2AM, bleary eyed and half asleep after nearly running out of gas in the middle of nowhere. Even so, I think I'd be willing to risk sleeping at a rest stop and getting murdered by a hobo if it meant this thing would be back at 50 pts. Oh well...

Thanks for the information, Paul. Do we need to add Reinforcements to our lists as well? Or is that rule not being used?

As for the rest of my wrecking crew, I can certainly cobble together a team from the regulars at Sarge's Comics in New London. My brother (I don't think you've met him) will probably sign up for one of the slots. Maybe I'll have the other players fight to the death for the last slot, ala Star Trek.

And, just so you know how highly I think of your events, I actually bought another two Warcasters and a bunch of models in preparation for playing in this tournament, after sadly being shut out last year due to my pathetic model selection. After skipping Templecon this year because of the sporting event that shall not be named, I'm really excited for this.

Tucker, as for reinforcements, yes, you definitely have have to plan for those as outlined in SR2012 because we have not explicitly excluded them. We haven't picked the scenarios that we'll run yet, so don't even ask how many games will use the reinforcements artifice.

Sorry for the delay. The web site was annoying me and had a small emergency at work. Both are now sorted and registration is live. Here is the link to go directly to registration.

    Quick update time.

We've got 6 team spots remaining open.

That means we've got 10 teams registered (8 confirmed and 2 pending confirmation). For those who have registered, here are the 8 teams that I have so far that are confirmed because they've registered through the web site and PayPal confirms they've paid the registration fee:
    - Team Temple Games (RI of course)
    - Team Temple Games II
    - Team Spite from Syracuse, NY
    - Team Electric Death Dragon from Pandemonum in MA
    - Team Burly Fruit from Quarterstaff Games in VT
    - A Troll, a Beastman, and a Pony from Quarterstaff in VT
    - Team Boiler Dump from Battleground Games in MA
    - Team Easy Button from Hobby Bunker in MA

So, that leaves us with two points:
    1. If you registered and don't see your team listed above, send me a PM ASAP so we can fix whatever went wrong.
    2. If you haven't registered yet (I'm looking at you NJ SOBs and everyone in CT) there are a few spots left, but don't wait too long.

    Update

    We're at 14 teams now:
    - Team Temple Games (RI of course)
    - Team Temple Games II
    - Team Spite from Syracuse, NY
    - Team Electric Death Dragon from Pandemonum in MA
    - Team Burly Fruit from Quarterstaff Games in VT
    - A Troll, a Beastman, and a Pony from Quarterstaff in VT
    - Team Boiler Dump from Battleground Games in MA
    - Team Easy Button from Hobby Bunker in MA
    - Regular Team from central MA
    - Dark Omen from Flagship Comics Southington, CT
    - Berger's *****es from Flagship Comics Southington, CT
    - TSA from The Whiz
    - Team Danger Apartment (defending champions)
    - Team Mendoza Line from Sarge's Comics, New London, CT (payment still pending, get back to me so I can lock in the spot)

That leaves just two spots open at this point before we're all full up. So, if you don't see your team and you thought you registered, send me a message ASAP so we can fix the glitch. If you haven't registered, sign up soon before all the spots are gone.

    See you in six weeks.

As of this past weekend, we are officially full. However, I'll put you on my "first person to PM" list just in case.

I'm getting excited, too. I've been trying out various lists and, let me tell you, it can be a bit tricky coming up with two balanced lists for Mercenaries when you're working with character restrictions and a limited selection. Also, I'm not sure if everything on my rosters will be painted in time, which is a little sad.

In a related question, does anyone have a Master Gunner MacNaile figure that I can borrow for the tournament? (I assume proxies aren't allowed)

Second question: There's no trick to making a substitution on your team roster, right? You can show up at the event with whomever you want?

I'm pretty stoked about this. My team, Electric Death Dragon, has been practicing like crazy the last few months. We're gunning for that trophy, so bring your A-games, boys and girls. Hopefully we'll remember to bring ours.
