Default Jarl; what makes the cut

35 point Steamroller this weekend, mostly Warmachine opponents. I'm wrestling with two Jarl lists. The primary difference being the inclsuion/exclusion of a heavy beast or damage buff.

    List One:

    Jarl Skuld
    -Imapler
-Slag ROF2 beast in addition to Jarl's two initial ranged attacks have worked really well for me in the past.
-Axer or should I bring a pyre to max damage buffing?
    -Runebearer
    Fennblades (max) +UA
Kriel Wariors (min) + 3 Cabers
    Fell Caller Hero
    SSC

    OR

    List Deux:

    Jarl Skuld
    -Impaler
    -Earthborn
    -Runebearer
    Fennblades (max) + UA
Kriel Warriors (min) + 3 Cabers + UA Should I drop UA and just max unit?
    Fell Caller Hero
    Stone Scribe Chronicler

Traditionally, I have run Jarl with one unit of troopers then beasts and support. But I really want to bring a mess of medium based tough infantry, so Kriels and Fenns are staying. Question is do I want the heavy or a damage buff for cabers and what have you? My other list will be pDoomshaper for the several Cryx players we have.

Any other tidbits would be helpful

Are you dead set on the SSC? At 35 I would rather have the extra 4 Kriels(or the UA) over the SSC. At 50 he makes it almost every time, but not so much at 35.

Other than that, that second list is pretty much identical to how I run Jarl at 35.

No, not dead set. But I have an unreasonable fear of loosing half my Fenns on the way downfield. But I suppose 4 more KWs counter that decently. You're definitely giving me something to consider.

YMMV of course, but I have had quite a bit of success with your second list(with max Kriels instead of SSC). At 35 points, its a lot of fat to chew through and with Quicken/Tac Supremacy, they move damn quick.

Man... Get u some long riders! Full unit & horthol. There monsters! Imagine slamming a model backing up 3" and possibly doing it again next turn if they give up movement to shoot u or something.

When I run Jarl I play with a full unit of Fennblades + u/a, full unit of scattergunners +u/a and x2 fell callers. I use an Impaler and Pyre as well. I have toyed with using a Storm troll to round out my 35 pt list (Thank you vassal) and have gotten good results. I understand your fear of losing the fenns early, I find an early use of Jarl's feat as well as early use of no quarter mini-feat has yielded good results. The clouds stop alot of shooting and the terror has actually caused some units to run (much to my opponents chagrin). At 50 pts I also add the aforementioned long riders and horthol, because LR with quicken is very useful in any scenario game. Just my two cents.

My Fennblades rarely get shot at all before they engage the enemy. Quicken makes them so bloody fast.

I like the second list better. I just don't feel confident without a heavy, just in case.

Thanks guys, I'm definitely going with list two, but dropping the SSC for max Kriels.

I find a nice trick with Jarl is bring a full unit of Burrowers along with the full Fennblades w/UA. Give quicken to the Burrowers and watch them scare the hell out of the other player.
