    Default Spells Question

Our local community is relatively new to Warmahordes and do not have anyone to really teach us the correct way(s) to play. Being as such, we are always learning new things (read: Errors), with one of the most recent being spells. Please help our understandings:

Each unit can have one upkeepable buff and one upkeepable debuff on it at any given time.

Each unit can be given any number of different non-upkeepable buffs/debuffs

A warcaster may maintain upkeep on any number of different buffs/debuffs.

Can we drop Defensive Ward on 2 or 3 targets? Are we able to only upkeep 1? How exactly is this used/abused?

I'm not sure what Defensive Ward is. Do you mean defender's ward? I'm going to assume Defender's Ward (an upkeep spell) for the sake of my example. Please correct me if you mean another spell.

Regardless, here's how it works. You have everything correct in 1 and 2. However, each upkeep spell may only be placed and maintained on a single model/unit (depending on the spell's target). You may maintain two different upkeep spells, but you can never have two of the same up at once. Once you cast it on a new target, the old one expires.

Here's what I assume you mean by used/abused.
-You cast Defender's Ward on Infantry Group 1 during your first turn.
-On your second turn, you upkeep Defender's ward at the start of your turn.
-Activate Infantry Group 1. Advance, attack, etc.
-Activate Warcaster and cast Defender's Ward on Infantry Group 2. Defender's Ward immediately expires on Group 1 and is placed on Group 2.
-Activate Group 2, which now has Defender's Ward on them.

This is a legitimate way to use your upkeep spells.

    Thank you for this clarification!

While I understand what you mean, and this is basically correct, remember that "buff" and "debuff" aren't real game terms and thus may cause confusion. To be precise, a single model/unit can have one friendly and one enemy upkeep spell on it at any time. The number of non-upkeepable spells is not limited.

Face Stabbity explained the upkeeping procedure correctly.

And for one point of further clarification, if and when you play against HORDES armies, the 'spells' that come from the warbeasts is called an animus, and each model/unit can only have one friendly and one enemy animus on it, just like the upkeeps. However, unlike the upkeeps, you can cast the same animus on multiple units to have them benefit simultaneously from them, as long as they each only have the one.

If the Warlock (hordes warcaster) uses an animus as his own spell (which he can) it still counts as an animus for the limit, but is a spell in all other respects.
    The internet grants me .

But each warbeast may only cast its own animus once, correct? But you can have the beast cast it on Model 1, and warlock cast it again on Model 2.
