Default thinking about getting Boomhowler and co.

Hey guys, I have been looking at these guys for a while and they look fairly solid to me, do you think they are a viable choice with Trolls? I like the idea of having what is pretty much a free fell caller hero within what seems like a very decent unit.

It is a great unit, especially if you can the maximum unit. They run great with Borka's new theme list "family Reunion". I definitely recommend them.

They are a great unit. Granted they are a bit situational with trolls due to the fact they are not friendly faction ever (except with Borka's tier list). They run well with Grim and Jarl when you are looking for a unit that just won't die. Also, they have a 14" threat (move then shoot) that works very will with Grim. When run with Borka's family reunion they are unbelievable. Arm 18 (KSB) with 4,5,6 tough and iron flesh. Yes please!

While Boomhowler & Co is good they really aren't better than what we already have unless you are bringing them with Borka's tier that allows them to be friendly faction.

If you play any of the Warmachine factions they play for its almost a must to own them! With Cygnar I add Warcaster 1st followed by Squire and then Boomhowler & Co. Everything else follows.

I haven't used them with Borka or any Trolls only because I use them so often with everything else I am looking for a break.....:-)

What makes them good with him? (not disagreeing - im just curious)

Im wondering, as Ive been thinking of picking up some trollbloods, and looking for a quick start, so if I have Nyss and Boomhowler, Alten Ashley, and the trollblood battlebox, Grim Angus would be a good caster? Any others that would work better?

I am Trollblood Patriot. Played em since their first release.

If there was a trollblood flag it would be waving behind me right now.

As far as Boomhowler is concerned,...... yes that is one rock hard unit...... as far as Trollblood history goes....

NEVER!!!!! They are traitorous scum and will be eaten by Mount Crushmore as soon as i get one!!!!!! I shall not rest till them have been digested in his mighty bowls and more loyal whelps are pooted out comprised of their matter!!!!

    but...

    yeah....

    they are cool :P

The list I play with Grim is melee/ranged based. On feat turn, I blast away at ranged. After they waddle forward or back or sit there, I blast with some things and charge in with others.
The feat makes them Rat 7 Pow 12 with their guns, block LOS to Grim to prevent him being shot to death and all around cause some serious damage to infantry. After feat turn, they can easily charge in and do some more damage, while trapping what's left in melee and jamming the opponent up further. He can also help the average Mat 6 become Mat 8 after feat turn, to help them hit more reliably, or knock a key target down.

Grim would be virtually ideal for your selection there. That is half my Grim list there. Impaler, Slag, Bomber and either Earthborn or Rok rounds out the beasts, throw in some whelps and you are set. I can't think of any caster that would run that better, though Calandra and Gunnbjorn are casters that can run the same beast load out and unit picks pretty well, for different reasons.

I believe Grim makes tham an effective Rat 8 on feat turn. I believe his feat is -3 speed and def, but yes, grim and boomhowler go together nicely for the above reasons.

I like Boomhowler & Co. with Trollbloods because they are an autonomous unit that does very well for themselves, and they are their own toolbox. So, in a faction that relies upon synergy, it's good to have something that isn't begging for buffs. Feel free to put Boomhowler & Co. on a flank where they can do their thing alone, letting you concentrate your in-faction buffs on the rest of your army. Or run Boomhowler & Co. straight up the middle as a super-tough tarpit to slow the enemy down while you wind up for a big hit with the rest of your army.

thegreatblah said it well - they're not really better, but they certainly aren't worse. In my mind it comes down to personal taste and exactly what you're trying to get out of the unit. Boomhowler can't bring Cabers, nor can he get the area control or volume of attacks that Fennblades do, but he's tougher than either of those units and he's got his own little tricks with his fellcalls.

I think Boomhowler plays very well with Borka with or without the Family Reunion theme list. Better, of course, with the theme list.

Also, Boomhowler & Co. runs with so many other factions, it's an economical choice to buy the unit if you play several of the factions he can be taken with. I run Trolls, Cygnar, Mercs and Cryx, and he is a staple for me in all of those factions.

Boomhowler himself is Rat 5 and would go to effective Rat 8. His lads are only Rat 4, and go to effective Rat 7.

I thought they were RAT 6 and 5 respectively. I can very well be wrong but regardless of the answer Grim does make them better shots

Edit: I looked at them when I got home and you are correct sir!

That tier list is really really dirty (and awesome).
