Cool My Scenario Board - WIP

I've been trying to decide what to make for a board and I think that I finally settled on a scenario board. I think it will look like a city park when I am done. At least, that's the hope.

    It will accomodate:
    • Break the line
    • Killing Field
    • Mangled Metal
    • Mosh Pit
    • No Mans Land
    • Throw Down

Comments welcome... criticisms tolerated... suggestions helpful.

I've sanded the edges down on this portion. All of the grassy areas will be sanded like this.

    Still needs sanding...

    Still needs sanding.

A little premature on the addition of gravel, but I wanted to test the depth of the cuts.

This will turn to a cool table! Your idea is great, it seems like a lot of thinkwork, keep it up.

Bluxart, Blue Claw and bentron - Thanks. The hardest part of the thinkwork was deciding how to do the boxes for some of the scenarios.

I hesitated to make this type of board because a lot of the threads say things like "Can't they premeasure on that board?" Then I thought... both opponents can premeasure, so this is still a fair fight.

I'm also thinking about making some fountain, blast craters and other terrain to put on the circles to add some difficulty... Imagine Mosh Pit in a fountain (OK, that would suck)...

Anyway you could provide images or documentation you created of the "thinkwork" to make all those scenarios fit on the board cohesively? This is a project I'd be very interested in mimicking

Darguth, I will be making the other half tonight. I'll take pics as I go.
I got all of the dimensions out of the scenario section in prime.

    Tools used:
    Pen
    Hobby knife
    Measuring tape
    Straight edge
Tape or string to make circles

As for how I made them fit cohesively... I put down all of the necessary lines and then stared at the board for about 5 minutes. I tried to imagine it as a city, but the circles looked weird. I tried to imagine it in the forest, but then it looked too geometrical. I finally settled on a forest in a city... a park.

The inspiration came from this park near my work. It's got a lot of circles and cement edging.

And this is a community garden near my home.

Yeah if you could post a full top-down image of the layout that might help me understand it better

    Here's how it works out...

first I overlayed all of the scenarios in prime onto the board...

Then I added the concrete parts of the board to have edges aligned with all of the scenarios...

Then I removed the scenario layer...

And here's how it looks on the board itself...

I may have transposed a couple of the scenario names... I'm trying to do it off of the top of my head.

Most of the foam work is done. I still need to finish all of the stones on the walkway.

looks pretty impressive. While it will have a lot of static elements you can vary with walls and that sort of things. Might have been cool to incorporate some steampunky things like making the central circle and outside circle cogs.

On the other hand this already looks like it will work perfectly.

I will be watching progress on this board...

    I really like this idea.
I actually considered that at one point... like the whole board were some great big machine... the center circles being cogs and the lines were pipes instead of walkways.
But I wanted it to be more of a park/open field and this is my first board (nothing too complicated please!) so this is the conclusion that I came to.
Unless the circles were actually a working cog... as a part of some larger machine... which would be cool... they would be out of place in steampunk design. Steampunk design is the tolerance of function over form. It's not the celebration of function. Since I wanted it to be a park, creating a monument or park to celebrate a cog seemed wrong to me. Now... how would a park tolerate steampunkiness... that's what I'm trying to workout.
It would make sense to place some steampipes and cogs showing through the grass or embedded in the sidewalk that are a part of some enormous underground network of valves and switches and pipes, with regulators and dials and boilers...that powers a bird bath.
Or a large sculpture of a city founder or empress that always rotates to face the sun. The gears and mechanisms to accomplish that could easily be a part of the design.
Or make the No Mans Land lines into pipes (I will most likely do this)
When it is all said and done... I prefered a simple board that was flexible in its use.

Sorry for the slowness... I do have some pretty good excuses.

    1. I have a newborn and a 2 year old.
    2. Tonight is Olgunholt league.
    3. I work a full time job.
    4. I like sleep.

I'm painting it tomorrow night, so there should be a little bit more to it then.

Wait...are you me? (2 year and 3 month old, Wednesday Olgunholt, etc...) Haha. (Congrats on the new little one!)

I was seriously debating trying to make a board with built in scenario markers myself. I like the "city park" theme you've decided on. It makes the markings make a lot of sense. Looking forward to seeing it completed!

ForestZ - Congrats yourself. Luckily my 2 year old likes to paint warjacks. He has a Juggernaut that he plays with and paints. Sometimes he takes it to bed with him instead of a teddy bear.

My goal is to get the board done by next Wednesday.

Since this is my first board, I'm trying to get everything right the first time. That's why it is taking so long. For instance, that black dot in the corner is a test that I did with spray paint after I had applied a coat of wood glue/water. It still ate a hole through the board.

Don't dilute the glue. Only raw glue will stand against spray.

I'm not a fan of permanent terrain.

I'll post pics of some of my movable stuff that I'm making in a little while. It's from my wife's breast pump packaging.

Google for "knife hinge" or "scissor hinge". They're pretty hard to find. If you can't find them anywhere, PM me and I'll order them for you and send them over.

Sorry, Last night was league night... two losses for Khador... So I didn't get much work done on it.

I started priming the grassy areas with a with a basecoat of green. Tonight I will finish the cobblestone on the walkway and prime that. I'm on track to have this done by Wednesday.
Sadly no new pics... I didn't feel that a half painted board really deserved an entry.

I should have something to post tonight.

I was talking to my Brother in law about terrain, and he suggested hedges. That would be an easy concealment peice.

    I also thought about...
    • Forest
    • Water features
    • Statues
    • Pump building

I'm also going to create some terrain that fits within the "cutouts" of the board.

    • The circles could be craters, water features, hills, large rocks, burned gazebo, etc...
    • Any of the sections could be forests

Here's some examples of what I'm thinking...

Any of the green portions could be swapped out for forests.

Any of the circles could be swapped out for water... and the no mans land could be a river (not shown).

Any of the circles could be rocks, hills, etc...

It might confuse things with scenarios, but I would add some more design elements in addition to the circles. Right now it looks like a hockey rink or some other sporting field. Other stone walkways crossing the field would make it look more naturual like a park. This is an awesome idea though. Watching with anticipation..

I dunno, there are plenty of formally laid out public gardens and parks in the world. For my money it looks just like a big, elegant stately home's garden. Exactly the right place for a giant robot throwdown!

Cobblestone is done. It only took two episodes of "Once Upon a Time" to complete them.

And the board has been primed.

Applying green and grey tomorrow, Drybrushing the grey and adding the gravel on Saturday. Sunday... day of rest. Monday green flocking. Tuesday adhere to plywood base and seal it. Wednesday DONE!!!!

Something that might make more games interesting (DISCLAIMER: I'm a noob) is having it be, say, a water treatment plant. Have the larger sections inside the pathways, but outside the circles and connecting sections, be deep water.

Actually, that is a brilliant idea for a demoboard. Green with white lines. But what would qualify as matching terrain? Paintball-style obstacles?
