    Default Mohsar + Reeves

Before we get very far, yes yes, I know that the opinion of the Reeves is low in the minds of a lot of people. Please either come with table experience and/or an open mind here. That said, what I'm wondering is if people have had any experience or thoughts with the idea of including a full unit of Reeves with Mohsar. There is one big reason that I've started looking at this ... Mirage.

Just to help save people time from looking, Mirage is faction Friendly model/unit so that will eliminate Nyss Hunters from consideration. It obviously is helpful for Woldstalkers, but those are a much smaller unit and you can't put Mirage on both of the units. I also know there is a pretty decent amount of advantage to the Bloodtrackers, but they aren't always an option and/or really fill a different role.

That said, I took to doing some math. If we presume that we've won the die roll and deploy the Reeves at edge of the deployment it seems that they should have a pretty long threat range and being able to forfeit their movement to aim is going to make a BIG difference. Here is the math that i've worked out:

    Deployment 7" + Run 12" + Mirage 2" + RNG 12" = 33"

Given that the enemy is going to deploy at the 10" line at minimum, which is going to be 38" from your perspective, we're talking about a 5" space where they won't threaten. Obviously Advanced Deploy is going to be even more threatened, and its not taking into account that diagonals might be an issue with range. However, this puts a situation where they're firing at RAT 7 with the aiming bonus and can still waterfall at RAT 9.

Also, of course this puts a large range of threat out there for a CRA of POW 20 on top of having some pillars out there to hopefully block some shooting back at the Reeves, charges, and so on.

@ cheddarcaveman: I'm glad you asked for open minds! Sadly my experience doesn't include Reeves yet (I have a full unit w/ UA). I just picked them up a short time ago and haven't gotten them painted yet! In contrast to what popular opinion is, I actually look forward to using them! To answer your question with theoretical advice though, Mirage is an awesome spell and certainly lends itself to any ranged unit! Especially with CRA as you can maneuver models to make sure they all have LOS. Do you play with the UA? I think the Tactics would make that idea even better! I feel that most often we reach for Woldstalkers because of the pure damage output, but I love the Reeves for the area they can cover!

I've done it before, and I've had mixed results.

The positives: Pillars keep them alive, Mirage lets you move around a bit and keep the aiming bonus, they have better range than Woldstalkers.
The negatives: They're still Reeves. Low pow, low rat, their rules rely on killing their targets (crippled by Tough, Errants, etc)

Now, I really want to like Reeves. I have full unit, plus the UA, and they've occaisionally done good by me. It's just that, the majority of the time, one or two units of Woldstalkers will do more than they will. Higher pow, higher rat, they don't need mirage to move and keep the aiming bonus, and they can potentially scrap light jacks on their own, even without CoS.

The only real situations where I honestly believe a single unit of Reeves is what you want/need, is if you're expecting to see large numbers of standard infantry, who rely on either no defensive buffs or cover/concealment. In that situation, they can become a firebase from hell and annhilate a large portion of your opponents army.

There should be a witty signature here, but I couldn't think of anything.

for the record, the nyss without mirage have the same threat as they are SPD 7. That said, I really like the idea of the waterfall shots on turn 2. I'll definitely have to try this.

Bloodtrackers are much better here IMHO. Sure, they lack range, but WeaponMaster and Prey gets more damage out. Add Nuala to the unit and they get the extra mobility to make up for the low RAT.
