    Default Character Restrictions Question

Still very new to warmahordes, and obviously coming here to gather as much insightful information as possible. While perusing through posts, I occasionally hear/see character restrictions (particularly with Mercs) and am wondering what they are talking about.

Some models will be designated as Characters (character solo, character warjack, etc). In a Character Restriction format, you may only have each character in a single list. Mercs suffer most from this because many of their better models are characters, thus it's difficult to field 2 or 3 competitive lists under that restriction.

This applies to Steamroller format tournaments, where in some tournaments you are allowed to make more than one army list (usually two or three) and pick one before each game, when you have seen which lists your opponent has available and he has seen yours.

If the tournament is using the "character restriction" rule (which seems to be in fashion these days), you can have the same Character model in only one of your lists. Usually this rule is used alongside the rule that you must play with each list you brought at least once in the tournament (so you can't make one lsit with all your super character models and two lists you're not going to even touch during the event).

Nothing to worry about during casual play.

    First off, welcome to Warma/Hordes!!

As a long time Mercenary player, here's my take on the subject.

The solos is where the character restriction in tourneys can be a detriment to Mercenary players, as we have between the four contracts 33 solos at our disposal. But only one of these - the Ogrun Bokur is not a character.

We have 12 units out of 25 that are not characters, so this is less of an issue.

But as PG_The Captain said, for casual play, you do not need to worry about this specific rule until when/if you start playing tourneys.

While I can understand having different warcasters/warlocks, is there a particular reason to limit/restrict/ or dare I say comp characters otherwise? It certainly keeps newer people /out/ of tournaments with this type of format (can I afford /that/ many extra models to only use part of the time in competitive play?)

Along these lines, are prime/epic of the same character banned (p/e Alexia can only be taken in one list or can one list have p and one have e?)

    Thanks for clearing this up.

In standard formats, non-epic and epic versions of models are allowed in separate lists.

These restrictions are only on standard steamroller tournaments. Sometimes Tournament Organizers will setup a tournament *Without* character restrictions. This might happen in your local meta, you never know.

While I understand it keeps new players out of the Convention master tournaments at first. Usually, local tournaments only require on list, which can have all the character you wish in it.

I play Khador, Minions, and soon to be Convergence of Cyriss.

The other thing character restrictions adds to the competitive scene, is it adds a new layer of strategy to the game where you must decide which lists take which character units/models, as filling one list with all your best characters, in a 3 list format, can severely hamper your other 2 lists.

As others have said, the masters scene will turn away newer players, but most of the players will walk over newer players, thus not leaving them having any fun which isn't the plan of privateer press.
