    Default What's missing from Warmachine/Hordes - Part 3: Indoors

Temples, Castles, Fortresses, Caves, Sewers, Cities...

There's a lot of indoors (or semi-indoors) places that WM/H could take us. Rural fields and towns are great, but there's a big field in terrain that other games are already seizing up. Wyrd, for example, has and official papercraft-esque terrain line with sewers and streets for their game:

Accessories like gaming mats may also help bring live into the game, maybe official "King Leto's Castle Mat", Khador Frozen Village Mat", "Menoth Temple Mat", "Everblight Taint Mat" could be developed (http://www.zuzzy.com/wc-bb-001-terra...aming-mat.html)

Interactive terrain could be also developed, like Mage Knight 2 terrain that provided specific cover and concealment, provided alternative weapons and other effects.

Finally, rules. The current indoors and structure damage rules are the same MKI had. These would need to be revised as walls and object play a larger role in indoors settings.

    Just another development route proposal...

-I think the indoor settings would be cool on smaller scale games (35pts or less). It would offer something different than the normal that we're use to seeing. Will people like it? I think it would be a hit and miss type of thing.

-The gaming mats would be great outside a tournament setting. Otherwise, people could abuse the already predefined locations for objects and cover and know how much movement could get you from point a to point be. The randomization of terrain offers a bit more of an element of surprise. For newer players, the hardest part is eye-ing the field and wonder if you can make the charge, or have enough range for a CRA, etc, etc.

-I am for the idea of interactive terrain! Wouldn't it be great if a jack/warbeast can pick up some crates or trees and throw them toward your opponent? Most of the melee jacks/beast have a RAT score on them, so they could use their RAT for throwing objects. I think that could open up a ton of possibilities for the game in general.

-I was surprised that they didn't bat an eye about structure damage from the transfer from MK1 to MK2. It was a decent start, giving you a lot of basic information if you were going to destroy the terrain. But I think they strayed away from that, due to a couple of models losing special abilities (Marauder lost his ability to deal extra damage to terrain, for example).

    Thanks for the comments koreandog!

just to clarify, the mats would not have predetermined terrain placement, but will provide the visuals of indoors terrain that could definitively be enhanced with the placement of walls, corridors, rooms, doors, etc.

Given that they are also making an RPG that used to be a variant of D&D rules, which is at least partially a dungeon crawler, I would be surprised if PP hasn't already heavily considered in-door terrain and tables.

Really, anyone can just do this themselves, though. Even interactive terrain already exists to an extent. There are rules for busting apart terrain, and you can go through the steamroller rules to find scenario objectives and the like which can be interacted with. It wouldn't be too much of a stretch to, for example, have a warbeast bust out a wall segment using the building destruction rules, then, following the crumbled wall, have it produce d6 small-based 'rubble' markers that can be moved over as rough terrain and provide cover, but can also be slammed/thrown/etc by warjacks to use as improvised weapons.

    Lanz,

You are right these ideas can be easily reproduced form the already-existing rules and scenarios. My point is for development, putting these ideas in the limelight: creating ready-to-play sets and solutions, developing new mechanics and interactions, manufacturing products and selling them to players.

As always, this is just a proposal,

Since the combat in IKRPG is 2d+stat, I hope that they make it so you can easily convert combat into miniatures setting. It'd be real easy to throw some terrain down and walk your 4-5 solos/support through a combat quickly.
