Default Tales from the crypt: A Cryx log by PBartholdy

EDIT: Malice conversion is finished. Look to the end of the thread for more pictures

    Hi there

I've decided to post a thread in which I can update my ongoing process of undeath. I've already posted a few threads here with some models, but I figured it would be more economic to keep it all to a single thread.

My theme will be a ghostly green for the most part, coupled with battered metal. My cryx will be old, and ugly. That's my resolve at least. We'll see how well it goes.

First of all, here's som jacks:

Unfortunately with Deneghra, as I was painting her I noticed that I hadn't cleaned up the moldlines well enough. I left it as it is however, as I don't think I'll be using her much after I read Lamorons spotlight on her. I would like to keep my friends please

pDenny is super awesome. She is one of your core casters, you should definitely be playing her.

Nice looking models. Keep up the good work.

Got around to my Withershadow Combine. I really satisfied with the result, although I think that the pictures I took do not really do the models justice. I've got to get me a daylight bulb, and do some experimenting with my camera. The models look better in real life I think.

    Anyways:

I'll post more pictures some other time. For now I have to go home to my parents for the weekend.

As much as I find Cryx to be horrible cheaters that should burn in hell with Dan Marino, I must say that this is some very nice work, I am quite surprised that more people have not commented on your work. I particularly like the corrosion on the deathjack.

    Keep it up!

    Thanks a lot Redfinger.

Coming up are my bile thralls. I'm currently working on some conversions on their heads in order to make them more zombie-ish.

I like 'em! How did you do the little hooks on the Slayer?

The little hooks are from an old GW Chaos Marauder sprue. I bought the Slayer used, and the original shoulder thingies were missing, so i attached those instead.

Three of six bile thralls are done now. I bought them from a friend (VonDerHagel - check out his Scyrah project log) who had planned on converting their heads. He'd gotten to remove one of their heads, so I had to improvise with some greenstuff. I thought that a disgusting zombie-like look would make for good bileness, so 20 minutes greenstuff work, and a whole lot of paint gave me this result:

I count on zombifying one more head in the group, so that I have an equal amount of zombie and skull heads in my Bile group.

I plan on using water effects on the pools of acid on their bases, but I'm gonna wait until the rest of the group has been painted and varnished.

Moving on. I've finished greenstuffing the third bile head. Here's a little preview of it. I hope the pictures aren't too bad, you should be able to get the idea

New pictures. I've tried to take some more pictures of TWC, but I still have some trouble with the lighting. It seems that either my pictures are lighted too much, or that my exposure settings on my camera needs some tweaking. I've experimented quite a bit today already, and since I have a thesis to write, I won't do more about that now. I think my pictures have improved somewhat none the less.

Besides from that, I managed to get my bile thralls done. They still needs some water effects on the puddles of bile, but I'll do that some other time. Meanwhile, have a look:

    And the third bile conversion

    Things I need to do:
    1. Experiment with camera
    2. do more dynamic, 3D'esque bases.

Seriously good work! Now if you can just potty train your bile thralls. Sorry, I couldn't stop laughing when I saw the bases and the first thought in my mind was that they had lost bladder control. No less caustic I'd guess, but funny none the less. The bases do look great and add to the corrosive feel of the unit.

Haha, I didn't think of that, but I guess you're kind of right. I guess that loss of bladder control is a necessary risk, when your body is used to contain highly corrosive fluids :P

    Thanks for the comment!

Started on my Seether. The end product is going to include a slight repositioning of the head and the legs. I'll add a more biologically looking jaw to its head too.
I've tried to make a more dynamic base on this one. Right now it's only broken wall and rubble, but I aim to include some splintered wood and static grass as well.

    Here's my progress:

Hi there. Got some more time to work on my Seether. I decided I didn't like it's right leg being in midair, so I went ahead and cut the whole thing up. I think with the new pose I'm working towards, the seether will seem really determined.
I also sculpted a new lower part for its face. I think it's coming up nicely.

Leg has been cut up. I hope my sculpting skills are up for this task.

Looking awesome as always! Glad you decieded to go to town on the base of the seether!

It's a little hard to tell, what the new mouth will look like from the pictures, but hey, I'm gonna see it in real life soon!

I'll see if I can get my Scyrah ready for our first game in June!

Those bile thralls are perfect. That head change makes that model gold. The way you painted them makes them less goofy and more goth/tim Burton (yes I just used Tim Burton as an Adjective). The bases are perfect and the color selection is right on. They really do it for me. Great job on those guys.

Bit of photographic advice: I can't be certain without actually seeing your setup, but I think that you're throwing too much light onto the back and not enough onto the models. This makes the photos a bit oversaturated -- Tartarus in particular looks like a shadow puppet. My suggestions for fixing it include playing with the angle on your light source/s, moving the models further away from the backdrop, and shooting at a sharper downwards angle to make the light reflect away from the camera.

Thanks a lot Kuwanger23 I'm really happy with the result too. I don't know if I should have modded the other three heads of the biles as well. Maybe I'll get around to that another time.

Lachlan: Thanks for the advice. I'm inclined to think that it's my light source as well. I'll have to do some experimenting.

Von der Hagel: That would be great! Not long from now. Less than two weeks.

I should be writing my thesis ... But my seether is stealing my attention.

I've made a little progress, and a lot of play:

    Seether and Slayer. pose-off

Seether with my homebuilt Warpwolf Stalker. Duking it out:

I still need to add some more spikes, and greenstuff its' leg and arms. But I'm nearing the end.

Awesome work! Your GS work is phenomenal as usual. I like how you do your robes...they look old and dirty but colorful enough to look arcane and interesting. Your OSL work is good but I think if you diluted your paint more it would look more natural and if you brought up the highlight to white in the light source the OSL will look more glow-y...great stuff!

    Thanks a lot Anthonicus

Yeah, I'm still working on perfecting my OSL skills, but I feel that I get better with each attempt. Actually I've diluted the paint a great deal on Gaspys exhaust vents, but it's a bit difficult to see properly in the pictures. It looks better in person (but that's easy to say on the internet, with no one being able to validate it )

Fantastic diary dude, I don't know why I had not seen this till now. Guess I must have thought I already had and it wasn't that great - man was I wrong!

The conversions on the heads are fantastic man, the Seether actually looks very alien and sinister like its supposed to. And speaking of Alien, the Zombie heads of your Bile thralls remind me of the Alien hybrid thing in Alien Resurrection, disgusting (in a good way )

Love the colours and tones you have chosen, beautiful work man. Very morbid and undead, and still very steam punk with the warped colours of the metals.

That Seether looks awesomely grim ... the teeth would have been a stolen idea if I could model like that
Also eGaspy looks stunning. The freehands look impressive. Keep up the work!

Thanks a lot to both of you!

You're welcome to steal the idea if you want to. I thought that the Seether looked rather unimposing in its default pose and sculpt, so I decided to give a little extra punch. I don't know if it is as berserker-like in its appearance as the fluff describes it to be, but I'm quite satisfied with the menacing look it has now.

Next on the list will be some necrotechs, but as I'm currently working on my thesis, due for august the 1st, it's going to be a slow process

  34. #34

A couple of necrotechs finished now. Next step is to finish the scrap thralls.

I'm quite satisfied with the bases this time. Static grass and a little bit of 3D helped.

Besides from that, I'm up to 72 pages on my masters thesis. I only need to write 8 pages more, and I still have one month left until deadline. Seems like I'm more or less in the clear.

No comments at all? Oh well

    Another update:

I've ordered a heavy jack and a Malice upgrade kit which I'm planning to magnetize. Until it arrives I thought I'd prepare a base for it.

The result so far can be seen here:

the plan is to fill the gutter with the same green acidic goo that I've made on the bases of my biles. I'll add some gravel to strategic places as well, but I don't know if the base needs a little extra something. Du any of you have suggestions?

My dislike for undead aside; those models look amazing. And if Malice is going to receive a similar treatment like your Seether, then it must look fantastic once it is done.

Looking foward to your next heavy mate, for reasons mentioned by marijnh.

Nice, creepy base you have there as well, good start.

What wonderful subtle details you got going on here. The green goo and the minor greenstuffs are giving me inspiration to whip out my Cryx and paint up a few things.
