Default New to Warmachine - not to modelling

So I'm getting the bug to play Warmachine - I'v been a life long model painter (both minis and WWII) and an old D&D player. I was going through my unpainted box and came across a couple of Khador and Menoth units and am trying to decide on faction, etc. etc.

But I have a question around metal and plastic. Do all the warpacks/battleboxes come in both metal and plastic?

I prefer working with metal - been doing it for 25+ years and was prepared to skip the warpacks for individual buys when I noticed 2 sku's for each warpack/battlebox and one title has (plastic) - the other doesn't.

They are in the process of replacing the metal starter boxes with plastic (they have completed most of these swaps), and the core warbeasts and warjacks for each faction are switching to plastic. Before too long it might get hard to find the metal versions of the basic warbeasts/warjacks and any units that have recently been released in plastic. It seems their long-term goal is to move to plastic as much as possible.

I used to prefer metal, but modern molding technology actually makes plastic pretty comparable in terms of detail. The weight is the only issue for me, but it's made up for by being easier to work with - cleanup and assembly are easier, as is modification.

at least with the plastic its easier to work with since no pinning is needed lol ie just look at some of the old horde trollbloods with their big meaty arms lol.

i used to prefer metal many years ago as mnost models were for TT gaming but its plastic/resin that has me now as its a lot easier to work with especially for the conversion work

The only Privateer Press plastics I have are my Cinerators and Bastions. I've never had to use a hammer to put models together before.

Now that I've tried the plastics, I have to say that they don't quite live up to my expectation. For smaller figures, I'd almost prefer metal - the plastics lack even the heft of styrene, and the plastic is just as hard to clean up or cut as metal. It's like it has all the drawbacks of metal, but none of the benefits. The only place where it's preferable to me, is with the warjacks. I can't imagine some of these in metal - but the plastic Khador 'jacks have just the right amount of weight to them. And they seem like they're pretty durable.

If the infantry were styrene instead of PVC, I'd love it. That stuff is so easy to work with and convert.
