    Default Cases for the Protectorate?

    Hey folks,

What would you recommend as far as cases go? I'm collecting (much more rapidly than I expected--that's how it goes) a burgeoning Protectorate force and my homemade solutions are quickly becoming obsolete.

So, which cases on the market have the best quality/price ratio? I've heard Battlefoam is amazing, but their prices are quite high and I'd rather not pay that much.

At the moment I'm looking at this KR Multicase. It holds 8 Heavy 'jacks, 12 light 'jacks, and 56 troops. That's a lot! I'll probably outgrow it eventually, but for now that leaves me with plenty of room to spare. And it's only $36. I guess I'm asking if there are better options than this for the cost, and if anyone has experience with KR Multicase.

    Thanks!

I only have experience with Sabol and Battlefoam. Battlefoam is legit, but you certainly pay for the quality. Sabol is really the bargain basement foam choice, but it gets the job done.

I use KRmulticase. The price is amazing. The quality of the foam is ... meh. But, the case it comes w/ really keeps everything tight. my only suggestion is to tape up all edges/corners/hinges so it doesn't wear out from use.

If you go with battlefoam get it at a con or what not. They usually give a discount
But seriously, I used to use a tackle box to store my things, because it was economical and what not.
The battlefoam is super expensive but so is this hobby. So I figure you wouldnt want a piece of crap to protect something you put that much time and effort into.

Why spend all that money when you can get something like this? Plano Pistol Case

These are big enough to handle battle engines, I have my Vessel of Judgment in one.

I went to school with a guy who kept all of his (Battletech) minis in a rifle case. He got some hard looks from campus police on game nights, and that was back in the 90s. These days it would probably be even worse, especially since I went to school at Virginia Tech.

That is a good way to get it stolen. People know what pistol cases look like, good pistols start @ $350+... so carrying around or having a pistol case in a vehicle, could be more temptation than some people can take.

After 12 years of foam cases, I've switched to magnets. Too many swords getting bent or fiddly bits getting knocked off. I mentioned this in another thread, but I glue washers to the base, slap on a 3/4 inch ceramic magnet, and stick it to a tool box or (better yet) a beer tray.
Get the tins or whatever at a thrift store, and you can load out your army for under $25.

The only problem is the new PIP bases have that plastic nub. Great for pinning models, crap for gluing washers. Fortunately I have plenty of old PIP 30mm bases.

Yeah, I'll probably end up going with Sabol (they have spots for books and dice and whatnot). Looks like $75ish goes far w/ them.

@Wazat, thanks for the heads up, but I already converted it to the almighty dollar.

@Zyllos: I've bought a case like that from Walmart before, and the price can't be beat. $10! However, I have to carve out the foam myself, and it always comes out wonky and wrong. I'd rather have some pre-cut stuff, but I may buy one in the meantime to hold me over while I save up a little scratch for a Sabol case.

I've always used the Sabol stuff and never had too much problems with them. My dwarves tend to toss around a bit for some reason, and if you get the armored core case be careful of having it full and using the shoulder straps. Mine ripped where the straps connect to the case which was pretty annoying. Keep the foam pieces that you pull out because you can use them to customize the slots for your big stuff. I did this for my Circle stuff and my warp wolves each have their own slot which is basically formed to the models so they don't move around at all. A little super glue and an accelerant was all it took.

If your FLGS sells the foam trays without the case, another option is one of those cardboard boxes that you can hold comic books in. It is what I hold my army in these days. Saved me a good 50 bucks.

A comic book box. That'd be sweet.

If you have some ingenuity you can do what I did and buy strips of leather and "wrap it around" the foam trays and create your own transport. Costs about $10-$15 (depending on leather choice) + trays. It works really well. Also it looks quite classy.

I also have a gun case that I've used for YEARS with my Merc and Khador force (1 for each) and they work awesome for $7.99. No complaints other than I worry about the Harbinger, and the Mule's mace gets bent every now and then. Otherwise no issues.

I don't have any BE's yet, but I plan on having a few (as well as some colossals) so I think I'll have to make a second bag for those...

I can't speak highly enough about KR Multicase. Especially If you play several armies or war games, because they are very modular.

I don't know, I live in Oklahoma and I have not had a single problem. Of course, all my cases for both WM and WH:40k all fit in my trunk, out of sight, at the same time.

Yeah, that KR multicase stuff looks pretty good. I might have to get that big $300 one at some point.

I bought the Battle foam standard loadout case. I tried using lesser cases and pluck foam and I was always disapointed in that crap. I mean you spend so much money on this crap I want to keep mine as protected as I can. I'm not te best painter in teh world but my jobs are decent and I want it to last. Battle foam was such teh way to go. I spent 180$ and I am completly happy with it. When I start my next army I will buy another one and keep that in their as well.

I tried using a rifle case and a pistol case and they still move around. I would never want to put a war jack in something like that. NO WAY!

in the end. you always get what you paid for.

And with what you paid for that case, I got a new army.
I've lugged painted minis around for 15+ years in pistol cases, and they work just fine. I don't know how your models "move around" since the egg carton foam that comes in every case I've seen sandwiches together perfectly. Broken weapons if you're not careful, sure. But those figs aren't going to move unless you took out a layer of foam out of the case.
    Agree to disagree, I guess.

Maybe I've just been listening to too many podcasts where Battlefoam advertises, but I've been thinking of seriously going with Battlefoam. I can get a top-notch case that will hold more models than I own for $150. I am a little worried about some of the heavy jacks (like the Vanquisher with that huge mace on the thin plastic strip) being okay in a case like this. Still, I'll probably end up going with BF. I know I can DIY, but time is a premium (I have all those models to paint!) and I'd rather pay for something nice that I don't have to worry about.

I have the same one. And I agree, but I compare Battlefoam and KR like cars: It's like buying a car w/ all the options, increasing the price significantly, and providing lots of nice "quality of life" effects. Ultimately though, soup to nuts, the bare bones car still drives from point A to B, is brand new, and works just great for 1/3rd the cost.

Foam cases are generally expensive. I view it as a relatively small investment to keep a much larger investment in $ from breaking and to be easy to transport.

Thanks Snipa, but I get the fact foam cases are generally more expensive. What I don't get is people saying kr multicase is so cheap. According to what I saw they're about the same price as battlefoam....

If price is a worry, get a bunch of earth magnet from eeebay and a metal toolbox. Stick the magnet(s) underneath your model, and voila!! cheap carry case alternative

Plus if you buy a big enough carry case (I bough a 3 tiers one from the local hardware store for AU$45), you can carry almost anything in it. Mine can fit 6 warcasters, all solos, full EE+UA, 1 x KE, full Bastions, 1 x DotF, Rhoven & Co, 4 heavy jacks, 4 light jacks, Wracks, etc.

The only problem is the battle engine, because it's too tall to fit in.

thanks for the tips on the magnet but LOL i'm not saying the product is TOO expensive.

Read this thread! People are saying KR is cheaper then battlefoam, according to my math it's basically the same price as battlefoam and i am wondering if i am missing something here!!!!

You got me. I never seriously considered KR. I started off with Army Transport and recently switched over to Battle Foam. Sabol's Army Transport suited me just fine to start with, but Battle Foam was more space-efficient and being able to design my own trays allowed me all the benefits of Sabol pluck foam but with higher quality foam. It is more expensive, though. If you're hurting for cash, go with Sabol.

I think you're looking at the more expensive bags for KR. The pre-loaded 120 BF bags hold 105 small base models, 22 medium base models, and 24 large base models. The KR one that holds roughly the same amount (Kaiser 2 - 16 heavy warjacks, 24 light warjacks, 108 troops) is 69 w/ shipping. huge difference

ok i see the kaiser 2, but it is like 69 pounds, not dollars, that is roughly 110 us dollars, i am seeing the 216 (216 minis that are like 28mm or whatever) for less then that.... so can someone please clarify as i must be retarded or something lol....
