    Default Darguth's Khador Painting Blog

    Hey all,

So I've never been much of a painter for any of my wargaming addictions. I usually engaged the hobby side of the games I played by focusing on building and painting terrain rather my own minis.

One of the main reasons I think this happened was because I started wargaming when I was very young, starting Warhammer Fantasy back when I was only 8 years old (26 now). So, I amassed a lot of models before I ever felt confident enough to begin painting. By that point the number of models I'd need to paint to even make a dent in my collection became seeming insurmountable.

With my dive into WM/H though my collection is smaller, so that's become less of a hurdle. Also, I've laid out specific plans to build up to certain point thresholds at a time, so there are more landmark moments in my painting to make me feel like I'm accomplishing something.

    Target 15pt Army
    eIrusk (+5)
    - Destroyer (9)
    Man-O-War Shocktroopers <min> (6)
    Great Bears of Gallowswood (5)
    ------------------
    8 models

Models to Add to Reach 25pts
    Upgrade: Man-O-War Shocktroopers <full> (+3)
    Widowmakers (4)
    Winter Guard Mortar Team (3)
    ------------------
    8 models

Models to Add to Reach 35pts
    Spriggan (10)
    ------------------
    1 model

And with my plan lain out, here is the progress I've made so far. I apologize in advance for picture quality, I still need to teach myself how to setup and use a light box. Hopefully this are still of acceptable quality at least . Here are models I've painted in order so far. I'm pretty happy with how my skills have progressed with each model so far.

DESTROYER - First attempt at using washes. I used a red wash for the armor plates and a mixed armor and brown wash for the metallic portions. I was not overly thrilled with the red wash.

Man-O-War Shocktrooper - Only did the leader so far, he took me so long I lost interest for awhile and when I returned to painting I wanted to do something with less red (boy, is that a pain in the butt to paint properly). I changed gears and decided to go with Devlan Mud wash for the entire model instead of the red and mixed washes I used with the Destroyer. I was very pleased with the result, I like the stark shadows and separating lines a lot.

MANHUNTER - I know, I know, he wasn't on my "plan". But I was tired of painting red, dammit! Also, I wanted to test out some colors that I might end up using for my Widowmakers and it made more sense to use this guy as a test model because I don't use him that much so if I don't like the outcome it would matter less. Fortunely, I was VERY pleased with the outcome

GREAT BEARS OF GALLOWSWOOD - Happy with the results on these. First attempt at highlighting any kind of cloth/robe effect. The pictures didn't turn out too well to see that, but I was happy with the result. Both on the inner and outer portions of the cloak. Again, I was testing some colors I'm going to use on later models and so doing just a few cloaks seemed less risky than say trying to use those color schemes for my Winter Guard garb later where it would impact the whole feel of the unit(s).

The bear pelts were also a big toss-up. I'm fine with the way they turned out but if I had a do-over I think I would have used a much lighter basecoat so that the white drybrushing wasn't so exaggerated.
