Smile [Speed Painting][Cryx]White Army of Doom

I started to paint my minis and I wanted to go fast, so I went on the minimum amount of extra paint AND some dipping technique. I wanted some whitish phantomatic spirit in these, avoiding snow and usual stuff.

    Army : Cryx.
Deadline : 50APs before the beginning of August.
Paints used : Formula P3 and Quickshade (light tone).

    List :
    Deny 1 DONE
    Nightmare DONE
    Seether DONE
    2 Deathrippers DONE
    Skarlock Thrall DONE

    6 Bile Thralls DONE
    Bloat Thrall DONE
    Gorman Di Wulfe
10 Mc Thralls +3 brutes DONE
    Necrosurgeon and stitch thralls DONE
    Pistol Wraith DONE
    Ragman DONE
    Warwitch Siren DONE

You can see some extras (Nightwretch and Slayer) in the gallery cause I started by forcing myself to follow the Journeyman League rules.
25 points painted so far. The next 10 are on the table.

So without further ado, here is the FlickR gallery

    And some previews :

    Necrosurgeon front by SHWTD

    Slayer2 by SHWTD

    Skarlock2 by SHWTD

    Enjoy !

The bone and red really contrast well. Bravo.

Ok, I've never considered using grey as a dead-flesh color. For some reason, it reminds me of the undead russian from Hellboy.

    Good work! Keep it coming.

Lovely! How did you get that wonderful bone like appearance for your jacks?

The bone is pure white undercoat (P3 or Army painter, the GW one is too greyish to be good). Then Quickshade soft tone from Army Painter. Applied with a GW wash brush. One of the bonejacks was dipped and it's too much of a pain to clean afterwards.

Grey is actually pure P3 Frostbite on the white primer. Then Quickshade LT again.

    Thanks for your comments.

Coming Next : Nightmare, bile thralls, bloat thrall and pistol wraith.

LOL ! Yes, I spam the interweb cause I haven't been painting my minis for a little less than 15 years and I am really satisfied with the result, given the low amount of work needed.

    Thanks for the compliment

    Giggety.

    I dig it!!

I also really like this, because you almost never see Cryx in lighter colors, and I applaud the lack of pruple that far too many Cryx players are using now a days.

Woah, fantastic. I adore it. I'm on a very tight budget (as well as boasting minimal artistic flair) and I've been contemplating doing something similar to finally get my Cryx painted and proud on the tabletop, and this thread has given me the confidence to try. I'm going to be very cheeky and ask for some personal advice. I have some GW paints left over from a previous project - do you think a spray paint white undercoat and brown washes would produce a similar effect?

Hahaha ! That's exactly what I do ! White undercoat then directly quickshade. Sometimes, when I went beyond the lines with another color I use some Morrow white to cover it up
I don't use Devlan Mud wash cause I suck at it. But that's exactly the spirit.

Although the GW white undercoat is actually greyish.

I prefer using P3 or Army Painter ones which are really white and will give a bit more light to the whole thing. Make sure you cover every part of the mini and you're not too far nor too close.

For the moment, I use 8 pots of paint only. :

    Frosbite (dead skin)
    Morrow white (armor)
Khador red base (tubes and energy sources and eyes when needed)
Midlund Flesh (for the skin of the non dead, although I'm hesitating with Khardic...)
    Gun corps brown (leathers)
    Jack Bone (bones and horns)
Cygnus Yellow (on the red to add some glow to the tubes and energy sources)
Quicksilver (some pieces of gunnery and armor)

For Nightmare, I had some spare Arcane blue, I washed the little girl dress with it.

Time on 10 Bile thralls : 2 hours to complete them.

Don't hesitate to ask for more. We have to support ourselves, We, the untalented ones.

Ok thank you very much for putting this up. I saw your slayer in the happy army thread and Bone+Red is -exactly- what I am going for with my Ret. I tried Eviscerae and Shai-Hulud's methods they used with their skorne but I am impossibly awful at painting and haven't been able to get a result I like out of it yet. This however? I can manage this.

How does painting the quickshade on work? I've done dwarves dipped before but never tried painting it. Also are you painting your red over top of the quickshade?

No you paint everything first, including the highlight and dry brushing (like the yellow in the red) and the shade (like the purple I had fun with in the stitches of the Bloat thrall, but the point of this method is to avoid other manipulations).

Then instead of dipping your mini in the pot of Quickshade and shaking and eventually still removing the excess of matter with a brush, take a large "wash brush" and brush the quickshade evenly everywhere. One dip of the brush = one third of a 28mm mini.

All the mini needs to be covered. Beware of the excess in the recesses. You can leave a little in there, but too much and it gets too dark. The beauty of the thing ? Never add Quickshade on the quickshade. One layer is enough, even thin and if you add some, it will get darker and bubbly.

If you go with white don't use anything else than the light tone. The strong and the dark will pollute everything white.

Watch out, the mini will be really shiny when dry.
Also, use it in a ventilated place cause it reeks with turpentine and let it dry at least 8 hours if your weather is dry and luck warm.

More than 200 Cryx minis and I only needed 3 white undercoat sprays and I will need maybe 1.5 can of Quickshade.

Is this the quickshade stuff you used?

I've never seen anything like this before, so I have to admit I'm curious if not a little apprehensive.

    Exactly this one. Soft tone.
It makes the minis really shiny when applied and a little shiny afterwards. But Army painter also has a very good Anti-shine varnish.

Oh, and the size of the can allows you to make at least 2/3 of the minis of any Cryx army (I have everything and some units and jacks are even doubled).

Update for the end of may : The last additions to my 50APs list. I have enough time to start a second list before my August tournament.

These final 4 minis took me less than 2 hours to complete. Yeah ! (pics divided in two posts)

... it's amazing how that clearly limited palette works out (given the fact, that I am fond of reds is an additional benefit )!

Now do some basing with sand, applying Quickshade too, add some static grass (complimentary green to your red), and you have really fast good tabletop quality on the table...

P.S. The Siren could use some red accent too, or is it the pic?

My plan for basing is : dark brown sand and green grass and some rubble. Thanks for the advice.

About the Witch, she doesn't have any source of energy. I feel like there is something missing indeed. I may get back on her later.
Right now she has 3 colors (crappy pics under the fading sunlight) and is tournament savvy.

I'm glad people like it. I was really worried at first cause when applied the QS looks really brown. Then it gets better when dry.

    ... give her red lips

I see, you have planned the basing already, and I am looking forward to that - if black wouldn't be a little difficult to shade, that could work well too if you do your sand more anthracite than brown (like volcanic lava gravel), contrasting the white.

As you can see, I tend towards that with the rocks under the Witch.

Good idea about the lips. I was also thinking at the eye protection slits on the helmet...

The helmet eye slits could be looking cool too, if you get the "glowing" right - like bloody tears...

Quickshade destroys your miniatures. It's really hard to remove it.

The dipping technique allows for some mistakes and missing spots, indeed. Now, I wouldn't encourage you to be messy when you do it.

My first try on Cryx was turquoise with red engines. It works well. You have a topic of various painted Cryx somewhere here.

Been lurking for a while, had to say this is awesome. I normally really dislike the Cryx aesthetic, but this blood and bone thing looks great.
