    Default Deviation question

If an AOE 5 RNG 12 attack goes short the target is 13 inch away. It misses But how far does it deviat in inches?
As I understand it if it had been whitin RNG but the attack roll missed it. the deviation would be a maximum of 6 Inches away if the target was at 12 Inches away. And it would deviate 3 inches max if the target was at 6 Inches away etc... as it can only Deviat Half of the distance to the target?

But if it falls short does it only deviat a maximum of 6 inches away from its new point of Impact? and do you roll this as normal or do it always deviat the maximum as it falls short?

thats right, you treat it exactly like any normal missed attack made with an AoE. So it will scatter d6" (to a maxium of 6) from the 12" point (1 inch short of its intended target).

I believe it can deviate 1/2 the max distance of the weapon... so a weapon with a rng 14 can deviate 7 inches

Yes, it would deviate up to the full 6" in this case. The template only deviates up to half the distance away that you place it out, and if you're out of range, it's placed at your maximum range and scattered from there. In this case, the template is placed 12" away, and scattered up to half that distance, or 6" (the maximum scatter anyway). If the gun were only rng 10, the template would be placed 10" away, and scatter up to 5" in that situation.

Its a little hard to read your question but here goes how deviation works.
You can max deviate half the distance you shot, so a RNG 10 attack can never scatter more than 5 for instance.
If you shot at something 4" away you can max scatter 2".

You have RNG12 and shoot at something 13 inches away, you automatically miss. Place the template 12" away, then roll the distance (1d6) and direction.
You shoot at something 7" away and miss, you roll the distance but can not scatter more than 3,5", if you roll higher on your d6 then you scatter the max distance (so a roll of 4 or 5 or 6 would be 3,5" scatter). Then roll direction.

Only in theory, since deviation distance is still rolled on a D6.
